Member schools are Boston University, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Georgetown, George Washington, Harvard, Holy Cross, M.I.T., Northeastern, Princeton, Rutgers, Syracuse, Navy, Pennsylvania, Yale and Wisconsin. The league championship, called the Eastern Sprints, is a series of races on one day in early May on Lake Quin- sigamond in Worcester, Mass. ormer Wisconsin head rowing coach Randy Jablonic inherited the men’s crew program following the 1968 season and within five years began the Midwest Rowing Championships, which had been held for 32 consecutive years until weather cancelled the racing Flast year. Started in the spring of 1973 on Lake Wingra, the Midwest Rowing Championships give the Badgers an opportunity to showcase their graceful sport to the campus and Madison community. The award recognized the accomplishments of collegiate rowers based on academic standing, athletic excellence and additional activities. “Eight” men and women were selected first team, and a second team “Eight” was also noted. To be eligi- ble, rowers had to have a minimum of a 3.2 grade point on a 4.0 scale, row or cox in the priority crew at the league championship and have achieved a specified score on an ergometer. UW Athletics Hall of Fame The University of Wisconsin Athletics Hall of Fame was established in 1991 by the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics, University of Wisconsin-Madison, in cooperation with the National “W” Club, Wisconsin’s letterwinner organization. The Hall of Fame inductees are recognized and honored for their exemplary athletic achievement and contributions made to the University of Wisconsin. The first induction ceremony for the 35 charter members of the Hall of Fame was held in the Spring of 1991. Rowers who have been so honored include:

Carl Holtz Inducted to the UW Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999, Carl Holtz became the first Wisconsin rower to join the select group of Wisconsin student-athletes. Holtz earned varsity “W” awards in 1942, 1946 and 1947, captaining the men’s crew squad in 1947 He stroked the 1941 freshmen squad to second place at the Poughkeepsie Regatta and the Adams Cup He also stroked the 1946 varsity crew to the first Eastern Sprint Regatta title, making it the first UW varsity crew to win a major regatta. Acclaimed as the finest stroke in collegiate rowing in both 1946 and 1947, his Wisconsin rowing career was interrupted when he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Robert Espeseth, Jr. The first Wisconsin athlete in any sport to make four Olympic teams, Robert Espeseth, Jr., represented the United States in 1976, 1980, 1984 and 1988. His best result came in 1984 in Los Angeles when he stroked the men’s pair with coxswain to a bronze medal. While at Wisconsin, Espeseth won national championships in four-straight seasons, including 1972 with the novice eight and 1973, 1974 and 1975 in the varsity eight. He won a world championship in 1986 at Nottingham, England, and was named U.S. Rowing’s Male Athlete-of-the-Year that season An eight-time member (1976, 1979, 1980, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987 and 1988) of the U.S. national team, he was inducted into the U.S. Rowing Hall of Fame in 1997 Randall “Jabo” Jablonic Jablonic, a 2004 Hall of Fame inductee, won national championships at Wisconsin as both a rower and coach. With the varsity eight in 1959, Jablonic rowed as the three seat to help the Badgers to their second national title in the varsity eight. As a coach, Jablonic spent 29 years (1969–97) at the helm, leading the UW to four IRA varsity eight national titles, as well as 10 Ten Eyck Trophies as team points champion at the regatta. His 1986 and 1990 varsity eights also won the short-lived National Intercollegiate Rowing Championship, while in total, Wisconsin boats won 28 national titles under his direction. Jablonic also served as team manager for the Badgers’ trip to the Royal Henley regatta in 1968 and as assistant manager for the 1972 U.S. Olympic Team. 1973 President of Rowing Coaches of America, he was 1973, and 1974 President of the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges. Founder of the Midwest Rowing Champion- ship in Madison in 1973, he served as a national team assistant coach in 1976, directed the 1981 US National Team to a bronze in the men’s eight at the World Championships and was director of the USRowing Association in 1984. Prior to his induction in the UW Athletics Hall of Fame, he was inducted in 1991 into the Madison Sports Hall of Fame, and in 1999 into the Power 10 New York Hall of Fame Jefferson Burrus A seven-time letterwinner in football and rowing, Burrus earned a “W” in rowing in 1924, 1925, 1926 and 1927. Rowing captain in 1927, he became a Rhodes Scholar and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. A member of the Scholastic Hall of Fame, he was a Second-Team All-Conference and All Western End on football team He is also one of nine Badger rowers to have won the Big Ten Medal of Honor, awarded for academic and athletic excellence. He earned the honor in 1927. US Rowing Hall of Fame 1946 Wisconsin varsity eight The entire Wisconsin varsity eight crew from 1946 that went undefeated and captured the first Eastern Sprints title, went into the Hall of Fame in 1977. The crew, including coxswain Carlyle W. Fay, Carl Holtz, Richard E. Tipple, Richard E. Mueller, Fred R. Suchow, Gordon T. Grimstead, Ralph V. Falconer, Jr., Paul J. Klein, Chester T. Knight and coach Allen W Walz were all inducted.

Timothy Mickelson A two-time inductee into the Hall of Fame, former Badger went in for the first time in 1984 with his gold medal-winning eight from the 1974 World Championships in Lucerne, Switzerland. He went in again in 2012 along with the 1972 Olympic men’s eight that won a silver medal in Munich, Germany.

Robert Espeseth, Jr. In January 1997, former Badger rower Robert Espeseth, Jr. was inducted into the USRowing Hall of Fame in New York. Espeseth, who rowed for the Badgers from 1972 to 1975, won three varsity eight national titles. He was inducted along with members of the four oared shell that won the World Championship in 1986 and was third in 1987. Espeseth was a four-time member of the U.S. Olympic team (1976, 1980, 1984, 1988) and an eight-time member of the U.S. national team. He now works as the head rowing coach at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Espeseth was also inducted into the University of Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.
