Kissinger says Geneva peace talks should start on schedule - ~ WASHINGTON (AP)--Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger expressed doubts about the seriousness of the escalating military activity in the Middle East yesterday and predicted that an Arab-Israeli peace conference will start on schedule. "There is no reason to doubt the conference will take place," Kissinger told a news conference. "I consider it extremely probable thd conference will begin on Dec. 18 in Geneva," he stated.

One questioner asked how he could be optimistic in view of the breakdown of talks between Egyptian and Israeli generals and in light of the increased fighting in the cease-fire areas. "We regret that the talks have been broken off," Kissinger answered, but these issues "are soluble and can be dealt with when other countries play a more active role" at the peace conference.

He explained the rise in military activities in terms of a built-in set of ten- sions existing in the current cease-fire situation. "Both sides have forces in the rear of the other, both sides are in danger of encirclement" if war resumes, Kissinger said. Therefore, he reasoned, both sides "realize the danger of being surprised" and are extremely tense.

At another point, the secretary told the sparsely attended news conference that "we do not believe the cease-fire will come apart or that the conference will be SECRETARY OF STATE KISSINGER jeopardized." .optimistic on Mideast (See KISSINGERPage 2) Page 2--LATE NEWS ROUNDUP Guantanamo Gazette Friday, December 7, 1973

OJ. closes in on. mile of rushing yardage, record

NEW YORK kAP)-O.J. Simpson is closing in on the toughest mile in the world, 1,760 yards of pro football turf. But he'd like to add another sixteenth of a mile, which would give him the record. The long-striding ball carrier of the Buffalo Bills has 1,584 hard- earned yards to his credit this season and is number one in the . His team has two games left and an outside chance of making the playoffs.

0.J. has that in his sightsand also the pro record of 1,863 yards set by the uncomparable Jim Brown. Buffalo will play host to the this Sunday and will close out the season against the New York Jets the following week. On opening day of the season OJ. ducked and dodged for 250 yards against New England. But its a sturdier bunch of Patriots he will go against this Sunday. is putting together a tough young team. The Patriots have won three games in a row and are in a mood to make it four, despite O.J.

The New England defense has given up only one touchdown in the last two games and has stopped the opposition in seven of the last eight periods. Simpson may find the yards coming harder this week. In addition to that, the Patriot offense has also improved and that won't help O.J. a bit. Simpson will not be able to gain ground while the other team has the ball. , New England's , is passing well, and three rookies on offense, fullback Sam Cunningham, guard JohndHanna and wide receiver , are all playing the way advance notices said they would.

Still, it unwise to underestimate a back like Simpson. O.J. needs an O.J. SIMPSON average of 140 yards a game for each of his last two contests. He is the kind of runner that can get 99 yards of that in one burst. .yards will get tougher J Three top-notch college football coaches return to alma maters NEW YORK (UPI)--Three of the nation's replace fired Billy Tohill at Texas Jessie Freitas'of San Diego State, most successful college football Christian University. the nation's leading passer, and .coaches are going back to the schools Mike Boryla of Stanford have been they once played for.
