17 Local Feedstock – Oil Seed What’s else is in development in OR:

Eugene-based Essential Consulting of is working with a fruit and vegetable processor near Corvallis on the state’s third and largest biogas plant.

Northwest Natural Gas Co., in partnership with Threemile Canyon Farms LLC, a 93,000-acre farm concern near Boardman, is preparing to break ground on a biodigester that will turn manure from the farm’s 1,200 cows into enough natural gas to supply 102 homes.

Bend-based InEnTec LLC next fall expects to complete a facility in Michigan that will be the first commercial-scale plant to convert both hazardous and non-hazardous chemical material into clean fuels. It’s also working on the first commercial-scale plant to turn municipal waste into ethanol, to be located outside Reno, Nev. What’s else is in development in OR:

Salem-based Diesel Brewing Co. announced plans to open a demonstration plant in Salem in December to convert dried manure and wood waste into bio-butanol, which it calls a cleaner alternative to corn ethanol.

Lakewood, Colo., based ZeaChem Inc. hopes to start work later this spring on a roughly $34 million Boardman biorefinery that will use poplar trees to create the latest generation of ethanol . The trees will be supplied by GreenWood Resources Inc., a Portland company that operates a 17,000-acre tree farm near Boardman. What’s happening in other countries?:

Waste to Biogas in Linkoping, Sweden

Factoids: - started in 1996 - generates ~48,000 MWH/year - fuels 64 buses & 12 public biogas filling stations - inputs; manure, abattoir waste, industrial organic waste, household waste, other What’s in development:

- Agriplast & Plas2Fuel

-Cellulose to ethanol

- Several other small scale biodiesel producers emerging Biofuels & the Carbon cycle Why do we care? What is biodiesel?

Biodiesel is a biodegradable fuel made from renewable materials, such as and recycled cooking oil. Biodiesel :: Advantages

• Non-toxic and biodegradable • Can be blended with petroleum diesel in any proportion • Reduces toxic emissions AND • 100% ; reduces dependence on fossil fuels • Supports the domestic economy Biodiesel : How do we make it?

The Context :: Climate Change

“The by-products-the pollutants- of one species have become the most powerful force for change on the planet.” – Bill McKibben, The End of

U.S. produces 24% of GHG with only 4% of Worlds Population

Source: Energy Information Agency, 2006 The Context :: Global Energy Crisis

• Instability in major crude oil producing countries • Booming industrial growth in emerging economies (China, India, etc.) • World refining capacity operating at near maximum increases fragility The Context :: Fuel Oil Markets Diesel Gasoline Gallons consumed in ~57 billion ~110 billion U.S. in 2002

Gallons consumed in Oregon each ~720 million ~1.4 billion year

Statewide Renewable fuel Standard – Passed in July ’07 •Triggered by in state production •Certain feed-stocks not acceptable such as imported palm oil

Value added market demand •City of Portland working closely with biofuel to support local businesses •Private business fleets making purchasing decisions relating to feedstock sources •Largest B99 retail market in the country Biodiesel Production Oregon’s first commercial biodiesel production facility
