From the Editor’s Desk: Looking Forward Together As the newly-appointed editor, it seemed appropriate to say ‘hello’ and briefly introduce myself. Many of you will recognize me already as I have been writing for the Calais Advertiser since 2013. In that time, I have had the pleasure of meeting and speak- ing with hundreds of community members around the St. Croix Valley in a journalistic capacity. Though I am “from away” – Oklahoma, to be specific – I grew up in Eastport and graduated from Shead. After spending time in New Orleans, then returning to Maine and living in Newport and Belfast, my husband and I moved to Calais in 2008. I have since become involved with a variety of local organizations. The people of Downeast Maine are caring, colorful, bold, and brazenly independent. Every person I have the opportunity to meet has a personal story that adds to the tapestry of this unique community. I am truly honored to carry on the tradition of sharing those stories with readers in The Calais Advertiser, a paper that is itself a historic establishment. Even though we live in an area steeped in tradition, we are living in a rapidly changing time. As such, consider this column to be a touchstone for a weekly perspective of events here in the valley. I look forward to serving you as editor and hope that you’ll be in touch by sending your thoughts to lura@thecalais- advertiser.com. Lura Jackson

Between August 9th-12th, In Your Backyard and the Junior Ranger Program will be held at 9 a.m. In Your Backyard will last until 4:30 p.m. and the Junior Ranger Program will go until 4 p.m. In Your Backyard consists of joining a park ranger for an overview of the history of Saint Croix Island and why it’s protected by the National Park Service. Park Rangers ask you to arrive at the Saint Croix Island International Historic Site and inquire at the visitor center. This activity will last for about fifteen minutes. The Junior Ranger Program lets children become a ranger. Children and parents are asked to stop in the visitor center and grab a free booklet. The book- let will give a list of activities to complete on site. Once you are finished with your booklet, you’ll answer the questions in it and then a real ranger will check to see if they are correct. Once you know you’ve completed the booklet, each child will be sworn in by a ranger and will be presented a patch and certificate. This activity will last for an hour or so. A morning salute will also be held on Friday morning at 6:30 a.m. Visitors will be able to join Park Ranger, Meg Scheid, for a salute to the Passamaquoddy paddlers. This will take place just before the canoe paddlers begin their voyage past Saint Croix Island from Indian Township to Sipayik. A lesson will be held, after the salute, about the Medal of Honor the Passamaquoddy re- ceived from France in 2004, and what role they played in March of 1604. This event will last for about an hour as well. PAGE 13

If so they may be Browntail Moths (they have brown bodies). The Maine Forest Service, Maine Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Con- servation, would like your help in tracking the moth flight. Please go to https://www.surveymonkey. com/r/mebrowntail to fill out a survey on where and how many moths you saw. The caterpillar stage of this in- sect feeds on the foliage of many hardwood trees and shrubs in May and June. They particularly like oak and apple trees. While feeding damage may cause some concern, the primary human impact from the brown- tail moth is the result of contact with poisonous hairs found on the caterpillars. Contact of these Hungry hummingbirds. (Photos by Ellen Roffey) hairs with human skin causes a rash similar to poison ivy that can be severe on some individu- als. People can also experience respiratory distress from inhaling the microscopic hairs that blow around in the air. Over the past three decades the browntail has been a problem along the midcoast and islands of Maine. The population is now spreading further inland and Downeast to communities such as Poland, Belgrade, Burnham, Eddington, and Deer Isle. Many people in these recently colonized areas are unaware of the impact browntail can have on them or their trees. Knowing where moths have been seen in large numbers can help us give people a heads-up as to what they may have to deal with next spring. P U B L I C N O T I C E AOS 90 PEST MANAGEMENT NOTIFICATION

AOS 90 (Baileyville/Princeton, East Range II School and Lee Schools) uses an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to the control of insects, rodents, microorganisms, weeds and other pests in school buildings and on school grounds. IPM combines a variety of methods for managing Flora and Daniel Belmore's great-granddaughter, Sarah Stephens, pests, including monitoring, improved sanitation and food storage practices, pest exclusion and husband Cahal, daughter Jennie, granddaughters Anna and Cece- removal, biological control, and pesticides. The objective of the IPM program is to provide effective lia and grandson Cahal, Jr. pest control, while minimizing pesticide use.

Pesticides Non-chemical pest management methods will be implemented whenever possible. However, sometimes pesticide use may be necessary to control a pest problem. When that happens, the schools will use the least hazardous effective pesticide feasible.

Notification When required by law, parents/guardians and school staff will be notified at least five days in advance of specific pesticide applications. When required by law, pesticide application notices will be posted in schools and on school grounds.

Notification need not be given for pesticide applications recognized by law or regulations to pose little or no risk of exposure to students or staff.

A copy of the school system’s IPM/Pest Management Policy is available for review in each school office. The schools also keep records of prior pesticide applications and the pesticides used. You may review these records, a copy of the policy, and Maine’s “Pesticides in Schools” regulation (Chapter 27 of the Department of Agriculture Board of Pesticides Control “Standards for Pesticide Applications and Public Notification in Schools”) by contacting the IPM Coordinators at 427-3325 or 796-2253.
