The Arts in Victorian Britain Fashion Taya Elezi 8th December 2018 Abstract The Victorian era introduced many different changes in terms of fashion. It was probably due to its long time period that it spans as Queen Victoria spent more years on the throne than any other monarch in the history of United Kingdom. With that said, there were many significant changes made in comparison from the beginning of the era to the end. People had to visit a seamstress or tailor to get fitted and they would create the clothing by hand. However, in the late Victorian era, and particularly by 1907, nearly all clothing was created with the use of machines. Many seamstresses had gone out of business or specialized what type of clothing they offered. The benefits, however, to the machines producing many types of clothing is that for the first time people were fitted and sized and given a specific size that was usually produced in a factory. These factories produced inexpensive elegant clothing. Things such as lace were being mass produced, instead ofall being done by hand which made the clothing less expensive. Therefore, even inexpensive dresses often had some sort of lace trim. Throughout wewill delve deeper into subtypes of fashion, and these are: • Women’s Fashion • Men’s Fashion 1.1 Women’s Fashion A significant factor in case of the Victorian clothing was etiquette. Thedresses worn by women covered their entire body. It was prohibited for a woman to even show her ankles and the corsets worn restricted the movements of a woman. Victorian Era Gowns During the Victorian era, Queen Victoria was the idol for women in terms of fashion. Women looked up to her for dressing style and fashion In the early years of the Victorian era, a tight fitting pointed bodice was much longer and had a small tight fitting waist. Later on, by 1845, the boned bodice was a bit more stretched out into a V shape and the shoulder sleeve line drooped more, restricting a woman’s arm movement. The word ‘crin’ is a French word for horsehair. The crinoline suggesting a crin lining was used to give the shape a foundation. 1 1. Victorian Era Fashion The evening occasions gave women liberty in respect of their apparel. A woman could bare the shoulder and upper part of the chest. At times the neckline was trimmed over with a 3 to 6-inch deep lace flounce which was draped with a number of horizontal bands of fabric pleats. This fashion was restricted to the upper and middle classes. Victorian Era Skirts During the early years of the Victorian era, namely the 1840 and 1850 period, the gowns worn by women were narrow and had sloping shoulders. They also had low but pointed waists and bell-shaped skirts. Women wore corsets, which reached up to the knees and layers of petticoats under their gowns. Later on, pantalettes and crinoline were used instead of petticoats and chemise. The reason for this change was that the size of the skirts had extended andso pantalettes was more suited to this new change. The dresses worn bywomen during the day had a solid bodice. For the evening occasions, women had some liberty as they could bear the shoulders and upper part of the chest. The outfit was completed by a shawl and opera-length gloves. This was the case of upper and middle-class women. Shawls also formeda part of the Victorian clothing. By 1860, the skirts were flat at the front. The day dresses had pagoda sleeves and a high neckline. These necklines either had a lace or tatted collar on them. However, for the evening wear, the gowns had a low neckline and short sleeves along with appropriate gloves. 1.2 Men’s Fashion During the Victorian era, male clothing included coats, vests and hats except when they were doing hard labor jobs. Any clothing less than this was considered unsuitable. It was important for a man to have a waistcoat or vest. These vests could be bright colours or dark shades and were used asan accessory to change the tone of the suit. Hats were considered as an essential part of the men’s clothes. There were a selection of hats to suit different occasions. Even men wore an accessory that 2 1.2. Men’s Fashion suited their clothes. Men wore ties, pocket watches and a walking stick and adding to the outfit were gloves. Men’s trousers originally had legs covering in tight fitting cloth but, the fashion progressively changed to a loose tubular style. Straight slacks, with a crease in front and back were commonly seen by the end of the Victorian era. There was also a variation in the day coats worn by men. These coatshad changed into long coats, mostly in black colour. Waistcoats or vests made from wool were usually used for day wear or as an office wear. 3 2.
