St. Mary’s Catholic Church ƒ 519 EastOBLATES Fourth OF THE Alton, MARY Illinois www.stmarysalton.com St. Mary’s Learning and Living Our Catholic Faith Catholic Church My dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, ALTON, ILLINOIS February 2 marks the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, and it is also the World Day for Consecrated Life, on which we celebrate Christ's call to some men and women to follow him more closely in poverty, chastity and obedience in various THE PRESENTATION forms of consecrated life. I thought this would be a good moment to highlight the consecrated religious community that serves here at St Mary's - the Oblates of OF THE LORD the Virgin Mary (OMV), a congregation dedicated to "working toward a rebirth of spirituality in today’s world." As you read this account of our own spirituality (taken FEBRUARY 2, 2020 from our website www.omvusa.org) see how it speaks to you, and pray for us that we might live up to the calling that we have received, and as well that the Lord would call more to join us as OMV's! God bless you! – Fr Jeremy OMV MASS INTENTIONS "“Even if I should fall a thousand times a day, a thousand times I will get up again Monday, February 3 and say Nunc Cœpi–Now I begin.” These words of the founder, Venerable Pio Bruno Lanteri (1759-1830), capture the spirit and mission of the Oblates of the Virgin 6:30 am Int of Sonny Asani Mary. Father Lanteri lived in northern in a time of great moral confusion and 8:00 am John Christopher† spiritual discouragement. He formed the Oblates to be both contemplatives and apostles, men of study, prayer, and compassionate pastors. Today, serving in ten Tuesday, February 4 countries around the world, the Oblates bring hope for a new beginning. This hope 6:30 am Joanna Sugent† springs from five key attributes essential to Oblate Spirituality: Mercy, Mary, Fidelity, Discernment, and Zeal for souls in today’s world. 8:00 am Ray, Donna & Jack Fischer† The Oblates of the Virgin Mary “encourage those who are in any affliction with the encouragement with which we ourselves are encouraged by God” (2 Cor. 1:4). Their Wednesday, February 5 hope springs from a keen sense of the goodness and mercy of God made manifest in Jesus Christ. Especially through the Sacrament of Penance and the proclamation of 6:30 am Patricia Judy† truth, they devote themselves to dispensing the Lord’s healing love. As Father Lanteri 8:00 am Bob Schnelten† put it, “Jesus forms the only treasure of their hearts; Jesus thus abides in their hearts and they abide in the heart of Jesus.” Emulating Christ’s meekness and humility, they Thursday, February 6 desire charity and mutual friendship to be among their chief characteristics. 6:30 am Int of Jackie & Mark Father Lanteri always insisted “the Congregation of the Oblates is not my work, McKinney but the work of Mary Most Holy… She is its foundress, its mother, and its teacher.” 8:00 am Roseanne Trujillo† Through the hands of Mary, the Oblates offer themselves totally to the Lord. Imitating Mary’s virtues, they pay special attention to the quality of all their actions, even the Friday, February 7 simplest tasks of daily life. Their devotion finds expression in the Oblate motto, Mariam cogita; Mariam invoca–“Think of Mary; call out to Mary.” 6:30 am Int of Agnes Balan The Oblates profess a loving and sincere obedience to the and the 8:15 am Int of Larry Moylan of the Church. In Father Lanteri’s time, the Pope’s authority was challenged, not only 5:15 pm OMV Vocations by false teachings but also by political regimes. The founder wanted the Oblates “to combat forcefully any error proscribed by the Church, and to defend, even at the Saturday, February 8 cost of their lives, every truth of the Catholic faith and any decision and decree of the 6:30 am Int of Craig & Mary Holy See.” The Oblates continue to serve the Church faithfully, striving for an ever Mauro more perfect fidelity to their own religious vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. As true men of the Church, they collaborate joyfully with local bishops and pastors. 8:00 am Rev. Evan Harkins† The spirituality of the Oblates of the Virgin Mary flows from the Spiritual Exercises of 5:15 pm Carol Cannella† St. . They approach life with a contemplative spirit, finding God in Sunday, February 9 all things by careful discernment of the movements of the heart. In guiding others to friendship with Christ, the Oblates know how to address the whole person, forming 6:30 am Nicholas Moehn, Sr.† free men and women able to discern the will of God in concrete situations. As experts 8:00 am George & Spiv in spiritual direction, they cherish opportunities to offer retreats and parish missions, Woelfel† and to vitalize the lay apostolate. 9:30 am Julie Mulrean† Working toward a rebirth of spirituality in today’s world, the Oblates of the Virgin Mary pay close attention to the signs of the times (Luke 12:56). With an ardent and 11:00 am Int of Chris & Mike intelligent apostolic consciousness, they dedicate themselves to the evangelization Galligan of the culture, especially through the media, and to the evangelization that happens 6:00 pm The People of deep within each person. About ten years ago I was making my annual 8-day retreat in Baguio, Philippines. For several days of my retreat a group of Catholic teachers were also on retreat. Each day they gathered in the chapel and prayed a number of prayers together. I found myself very moved by their devotion and the prayers they prayed and as their retreat ended, I asked for a copy of their little prayer book. February is the Month of the Holy Family and, in the next few weeks I am going to share four of those prayers here, all related to family life. - Fr Jeremy OMV PRAYER CORNER Prayer for a Happy Marriage Informational Meeting Dear Lord, You well know the sacrifices, problems and February 4, 2020 hopes which come to all who embrace married life.
