The Sun obtained funding in late 2009 from the City of Dawson, YTG’s Heritage Branch and the Community Development Fund to conserve and archive early issues and make them available once again in the public domain. This is a great resource for students, writers and historians, and also for prospective tourists with an interest in Dawson City’s life. Each month, we are re-printing our front pages from 20 years ago (seen above) as a souvenir of our lively history. Past issues are available for download on our website, http://klondikesun.com. More will be added periodically throughout the year! P18 WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4, 2012 THE KLONDIKE SUN Cooking with Larry Photos by Julia Jennings

On Thaw di Gras weekend, Berton House writer in residence Lawrence ("Larry") Hill bit the cold and took part in the 17th Annual Chili Cook0ff. On a team with Bobbie Milnes, they got served 3rd place! Larry says he was taken by surprise when Bobbie took off to run the Sunnydale Classic, but he stayed the course in spite of freezing his bum off. Next year, Hill warns he'll be back for the win ... but he knows he'll have to figure out a way to bump off Mike Fraser and family first.

2 col x 5" THE KLONDIKE SUN WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4, 2012 P19 Thaw di Gras Anticipates the Coming of Spring Story & Photos By Dan Davidson

March 16-18 saw Dawson celebrate another Thaw di Gras. The name of the Klondike’s spring carnival is a play on the idea of Mardi Gras, which actually took place a month earlier on Shrove Tuesday. Can it really be a “spring” carnival when temperatures hovered between -7 and -15 and there was enough wind to put an edge on it? Well, the street hockey players on Third Avenue outside the Westminster thought it was okay, and several teams braved the chill to create snow sculptures opposite the Oddfellows Hall Street hockey is a favorite game for boys of all ages on Second Avenue. In the parking lot across from Diamond Tooth Gerties kids and adults spent Sunday afternoon at a variety of outdoor activities, including axe throwing, log sawing and tea brewing. Call of Thethe Wild One Dog Pull, made famous in Jack London’s , took place across the street from the Eldorado Hotel. An upside-down cake? What? Upside-down cakes were the 1950’s housewives dessert of choice and it was always a hit. Basically butter and brown sugar are melted and poured into a cake pan. Then fruit is added, then the cake batter. One can use peaches, or blueberries, or even apples, but the most famous is the pineapple upside-down cake. You melt your butter and brown sugar and put them in a cake pan. Then you arrange your pineapple slices on top of the butter and sugar. You fill the centers of the pineapple rings with Then… you flip the whole cake on to a plate, leaving it in the cake pan so the cake maraschino cherries, pour your cake batter over it, and bake it till a toothpick stuck can soak up the butter and sugar mixture. (This only takes about 5 minutes) into the cake comes back out clean. NOW, my favorite part, YOU EAT IT!

TheNow upside- if you found the idea of an upside-down cake strange, how about an Upside- down fish?

down catfish U.F.O. stands for an ‘unidentified flying object’. is originally U.F.O.’S have been recorded as far back as 45,000 B.C.! In China rock carvings were from the Zaire found that depicted what seem to be U.F.O.’S. That’s as far back as the Neanderthals! and Niger Through out history there have been many 'sightings'. Most were hoaxes, like River systems when someone would throw a hubcap into the air while someone else took a picture of Africa. Its and there you have it! An unidentified flying object! picture has But there have been several sightings that cannot be explained. been found in Even with today’s knowledge of ball lighting, sundogs, and reflections, this myth, aold popular Egyptian or truth, about U.F.O.s is still around today with thousands of sightings every year. Art and it is addition to fish tanks. This catfish can live up to 15 years but they are only 7 to 10 cm long (3 to 4 inches). They have dark bellies and lighter backs, which help them to remain hidden when swimming, near the surface because they swim upside down! The young catfish don’t begin to swim upside down for several months. Is this instinct? Or is it learned from watching their parents? If you want to raise some of these fascinating fishes you should always have at least 3 to 6 of them because in the wild they live in schools (a school is a group of fish). Your tank should be at least 20 gallons and heavily planted with broadleaf plants, have a few over-turned flowerpots, or hollow pieces of wood. They are very easy to breed and unlike some fish the parents will look after them and they (the parents) do not be moved into another tank. The Upside-down Catfish is a good eater and will even adapt to fish flakes but it does prefer krill (baby shrimp-like things) or Tubifex worms, or even earthworms! It also eats mosquito larvae and algae.
