PREFACE.

An ancestry of sound-bodied, clear-minded, Christian men and women is hardly to be overvalued, and of such calibre were the ancestors of this family. While great satisfaction is found in studying family history, few lines of research tend more to a realization of that little sus­ pected truth, the cousinship of men. The distinction must not be lost between the customary genealogy of one sur­ name, which omits all mention of female branches and is therefore very inadequate as a history of any person, and an ancestral genealogy in which the female equally with the male branches are given careful research and extension, as in the following pages. The numerical increase of ancestors is surprising, for ten generations include over one thousand ancestors for each living person. Public and Bible records, mauuscripts, and approved genealogical works are the sources of all statements made. The system pursued needs little explanation, the numbers being simply for reference. Those who have supplied material, and who have al­ lowed me access to private libraries and records, Ithank, and express my high appreciation of their kindnesses. Howard Redwood Guild. Mr.Robert Cushman, 64 b. 1580 +,Eng., near Canter­ bury. By trade he was a wool carder, though an educated and refined person. A nonconformist, he removed about 1609, with Mr. John Robinson and others, to Leyden. With John Carver he was deputed to secure permission from the Kinsof England for the church toremove toNew England, in which they were finally successful. He was largely instrumental in securing the "Mayflower" and "Speedwell." Robert and family started in the "May­ flower" but on the "Speedwell" proving unseaworthy, he was selected to take charge of those who returned, and bring them on the first vessel to be secured, which was the "Fortune," 1621. Gov. Bradford says Robert Cushman "was as our right hand withthe adventurers." For several years he was the agent of the inEngland, and secured their Patent. He d. Elder Thomas Cushman, 66 b. Feb., 1608, inEngland ; m. 1636; d. 11 Dec, 1691, inPlymouth. He came in ship "Fortune" with his parents. He was brought up in Governor Bradford's family ;m. The ancestors immigrated from England, Scotland and Wales, mostly before 1650, all before 1670. Their de­ scendants led quiet, healthful lives, and many held mili­ tary and civilrank, and were persons of distinction. About 70% have been of the Orthodox, 25% of the Bap­ tist and h% of the Friends persuasion. Oilpaintings exist of 11, 83, 84, 118, 156, 157, 239, silhouettes of 30, 155, 166, 167, 238, 298, and photographs of10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 84, 156, 157, 239. Autographs ofmost are in existence. Few heirlooms have been more carefully preserved than old silver or furniture ;of which much is identified and is highly interesting. Coats of arms have not received much of my attention, but Ihave some ten crests, etc., which seem to belong to families here named. From one hundred and fiftyknown lives the following average longevity is deduced, viz. :ancestors of No. 11, 67^ years, No. 84, 69^ years, No. 156, 69^& years, and No. 239, 66 years : general average 67T*oV years. I see no grounds for supposing the later generations shorter- lived than the earlier. Judged by the twenty-six more recently deceased ancestors about whom information was to be had, there is in the family no hereditary weakness or disease. Nos. 10 and 83 died, itis recorded, of cancer, but as they were 84 and 88 years of age respectively, it seems that extreme age must have had much to do with (36) CONCLUSION. 37 their decease. Nos. 155, 167 and 298 died of consump­ tion, the result of accident and not perceptibly inherited. Birth, marriage and sex ratios are of value and interest, but two comparisons are offered to illustrate :the six gen­ erations of Guilds give average families of eight children, 63% male, 37% female, of whom 55% married. The seven generations ofMartins give average families ofnine children, 50% male and 50% female ;66% of whom mar­ ried. Though very unlikely, it is but just to state that there is a small possibility of error in the parentage given for Nos. 48 and 63. Evidence is strongly in favor of what is given in the text. The charts are inserted for clearness and to show the generation of an aucestor, and include third to eighth only. Most of the lines can be carried to the ninth and teuth.
