STUDENT SHOWCASE – NOSE CREEK’S PROJECT G.R.O.W.

Presenters: Teacher – Wendy Dixon Student Presenters - Ava Mesiatowsky, Michael Holland, Evan Sabraw, Omid Qaderi, Brooklynne Henwood, and Mikayla Vincent

Project G.R.O.W (Gardens Replenish Our World) was developed in response to Grade Four teachers wanting to extend students’ understanding of plant growth beyond what could be accomplished in the classroom when teaching Science Unit Plant Growth and Change.

Project G.R.O.W was established in the spring of 2009. Each year a group of approximately one hundred Grade Four students and their teachers, along with eager parent volunteers, visit the garden at Wendy Dixon’s farm (15 minutes NW of Airdrie) on three formal occasions to weed, hill, plant and harvest potatoes.

By planting, caring for, and harvesting large garden plots, the students not only address the learning outcomes in their Science unit, Plant Growth and Changes, but also put into practise our 21st Century goal, Collaboration. Once harvested, the potatoes will be donated to the Airdrie Food Bank, as part of our ongoing involvement with this community service organization. This endeavour is continued yearly and each Fall the new Grade Four gardeners will harvest what last year’s Grade Four’s planted in the Spring.
