Prepared Application Case and Planned Development (CEA) Case for wildlife component of EIA under AEPEA of proposed oil sands open pit mine. Responded to supplemental questions from government and stakeholder groups and prepared technical material for hearing.

MEG Energy Inc. Conklin, Alberta Senior biologist for the preparation of long term wildlife monitoring plan, mitigation monitoring plan and wildlife habitat enhancement plan as required under Alberta Environment approval conditions for an approved in-situ project. Conduct and report on annual ungulate surveys as part of the long term wildlife monitoring program. Wildlife component lead for the MEG Energy Oil Sands In-situ project. Prepared wildlife component of EIA, consulted on the timing constraints, best operating practices and pre-project planning in relation to a woodland caribou range and prepared an overall caribou protection plan strategy and annual CPP. Suncor Energy Inc. Fort McMurray, Alberta Provided consultation on the impacts from the existing Firebag In-Situ Project on woodland caribou and assisted with the development of a monitoring strategy for caribou. Established long-term monitoring plots and completed monitoring for amphibians.

Fort McKay, Alberta Prepared wildlife component of an EIA Application (AEPEA) which involved determining impacts of a mine to wildlife abundance, wildlife habitat and wildlife movement corridors from the Horizon Project. Completed winter wildlife surveys for use within a wildlife movement corridor study.

Minera Barrick Misquichilca S.A. Lima, Peru S.A. Provided technical review of wildlife baseline reports prepared for the Alto Chicama gold mine project. Assisted in the preparation of the EIA for wildlife, biodiversity and fish which included public consultation results, issue scoping and predicting project related effects on key wildlife species. Presented findings and participated within PTAC Workshop discussing the state of the science on woodland caribou and the application of mitigation design and knowledge gaps.

Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers Northeastern, Alberta Principle investigator of predator efficiency study within the Richardson’s Caribou Area in northeastern Alberta. Study investigates predator movement along linear developments and influence of linear development variables such as width, type, human use and vegetation cover.

Alberta Caribou Committee (ACC) Edmonton, Alberta Provided a preliminary report of caribou research and knowledge gaps to the ACC.

South SAGD Operators ( Calgary, Alberta Secondary investigator of a literature review on wildlife crossing structures for above-ground pipelines in the Oil Sands Region of NE Alberta. Synthesized available information on the effects of above-ground pipelines on wildlife movements and recommended research design to determine the best mitigation. The report was prepared for a consortium of oil sands operators including Opti Canada, Nexen, Conoco-Philips, Encana, Devon Energy and JACOS.

Cumulative Environmental Management Association Fort McMurray, Alberta Principle investigator of a literature review on the topic of wildlife movement corridors in the Oil Sands Region of NE Alberta. Review synthesized available information on the utility of movement corridors as conservation tools and discussed corridor design characteristics, identified applicable species, identified data gaps and suggested recommendations for a corridor study in the Oil Sands Region.

Caribou Landscape Management Association (CLMA) Peace River, Alberta Completed comprehensive review of the effectiveness of caribou mitigation measures on behalf of the CLMA and the Forest Products Association of Canada. Involved a formal questionnaire and interview process with 40+ representatives from the oil and gas, mining and forestry industry from across Canada.
