Blackfriars Priory School The OPtimist News & Highlights

PRAYER STUDY COMMUNITY SERVICE From the Principal

Principal, Mr Simon Cobiac, with Year 6 boys Daniel Carlier, Angus Carmody and Garreffa.

I am both delighted and excited to inform the community that the Design Development Blackfriars Priory School Phase of the first building of the Master Plan has been completed. Graphical illustrations 17 Prospect Rd, Prospect SA 5082 of the external façade for ‘Building A’ appear on the facing page. I hope you will agree that PO Box 86, Prospect SA 5082 the design created by Swanbury Penglase: Architects of Human Space in collaboration with T: +61 8 8169 3900 the Board is innovative and modern; providing a striking visual appeal to the community. E: [email protected] The building has a strong presence; the use of glass, patterned concrete and steel will bps.sa.edu.au complement the height of the building and columns and curved lines featuring in the design facebook.com/BlackfriarsSchool will emphasise the specialised purpose of the building. CRICOS: 02485B The first of three buildings to be constructed along Highbury Street, this will provide wonderful learning facilities for students including a specialist Year 12 Centre, STEM project facilities, Science learning spaces, general learning areas, collaborative spaces and teacher facilities.

The planning, documentation and tender phase of the project will soon commence and, all proceeding to schedule, we anticipate that construction will begin in late April 2019. A budget of $10M has been planned and forecasted for the first major building project for the school in many years. It will be funded from a loan, school resources, donor and benefactor contributions as well as successful fundraising events supported by the whole community.

With a clear vision and mission of providing an exciting learning environment for current and future students, Blackfriars is embarking on constructing purpose-built facilities that will accommodate and benefit students for 21st century education.

School Formal

The Year 12 Formal was a very successful evening on Friday 22 June 2018 (Week 8). The evening was a great way for our Year 12 students to demonstrate our pillar of community through socialising with their peers and invited guests from a range of other schools in Adelaide. The night is an important and much anticipated event on the Year 12 calendar and a good way for students to relax after the stress of first semester. It was a credit to both our students and the accompanying staff to again have outstanding feedback from the venue and other organisations involved in the night on the way the young people in attendance conducted themselves. The students and their guests looked stunning, dressed in their formal outfits. PARTY Program

On Thursday 5 July, approximately 30 Year 10 and 11 students attended the new Royal Adelaide Hospital for the PARTY programme. PARTY stands for ‘Prevent Alcohol and Risk related Trauma in Youth’. For the duration of the day, the students were able to hear from many of the stakeholders involved in trauma cases that are presented at the RAH. This includes doctors, nurses, emergency workers and allied health professionals who volunteer their time to tell their stories in the hope that they can help reduce the incidence of trauma. The day also gives students the opportunity to hear from survivors. Throughout the day, students were able to experience some of the movement a trauma patient would take through the hospital when taken to the RAH after an incident. The students were incredibly engaged and left with a long-lasting reminder of the potential consequences risk taking behaviour can have. The day continually referred to the theme, you can choose your actions, but you can’t choose the consequence, and for some the consequence is life changing

Visitors

The ELC Purple Room welcomed a special visitor for two weeks this year - George the snake! George, a children’s python, fascinated the children as they observed, researched and recorded George’s traits, habits and environment. The Yellow Room hosted a number of visitors this year including Scoobie the bearded dragon, from the Nature Education Centre. Each fortnight the Yellow room collected different specimens for display including lizards, green tree frogs, stick insects, hopping mice and rabbits. Plus, Kaushik’s mum paid us a visit (above left) and Alexia’s Dad brought his Police car to show us (left).

13 Primary News

As the year speeds along it is great to reflect on the events that have been enjoyed by our boys - and our ELC girls and boys - over the past months.

It has been a term full of events and excursions from the outstanding Music Concert and ABODA Festival to the Star Gazing Evening, Disco, Book Week, Fathers’ Day Stall and Liturgy, Grandparents’ Day, to name a few. Here are some of the highlights:

The Primary Disco was a fun night with boys from Blackfriars and girls from St Dominic’s and Rosary dancing the evening away. There was some very impressive karaoke as well! We were grateful of the teachers and parents who were able to assist us.

Congratulations to all the boys who were involved in the ABODA Bands Competition. Dozens of schools were involved and our young band, Band 3, even though they were competing against many older and more experienced musicians, did themselves and their parents and teachers, proud winning the Bronze Trophy – well done! Thanks to their teachers and all who helped.

Grandparents’ Day was a great morning where over 200 grandparents and families came to be entertained by their grandchildren and then shared in a morning tea. We are so lucky to have so many involved grandparents in our community.

Book Week was a perfect opportunity to promote and encourage reading and other literacy-based activities. Mrs Wilson, along with the Library staff and helpers, made sure the whole week was enjoyable and educational. The wonderful Parade was outstanding and a perfect culmination of all the activities. The Treasure Hunt organised by Mrs Kenny was also very popular and great fun. Thanks to all for such a fun time! Top: Students get ready for action at the Primary disco. 15 Centenary of Armistice Commemoration A time to remember, reflect and give thanks On Wednesday 7 November, as a major part of the school’s Dominican All and Remembrance Day Liturgy, the Blackfriars School community, from Early Learning to Year 12 commemorated Armistice Day.

The word armistice means a truce, settlement or ceasefire and, as was conveyed to those present, there have been many armistices over the course of world history. However, one particular armistice has left an indelible mark on the psyche of our country. At 11am on the eleventh day of the eleventh month (November) Australians have, for a hundred years stopped and paid homage and respect to those who fought for our country in World War I and every subsequent armed conflict in which Australians have been involved.

World War I was acknowledged by politicians of the time as “The War to end all Wars“. However, clearly that has not been the case. In the subsequent 100 years many Australians have fought for our country in many different theatres of war.

As part of our liturgy, Blackfriars paid homage to eight Old Scholars who fought for our country in the Vietnam War: George Craig (‘64), Ron List (‘62), Peter Meaney (‘65), Barry Mouton (‘64), Robert Perry (‘64), Tony Perry (‘62), (‘63) and Mark Thompson (‘66), with Peter Meaney, Barry Mouton, Tony Perry and Mark Thompson attending on the day.

Staff, students and guests acknowledged our Old Scholars’ service to the Australian armed forces in Vietnam and their contribution to the history of our country. Our veterans each received a gift of thanks and acknowledgment from Principal, Simon Cobiac, on behalf of the Blackfriars community. The ceremony was followed by a morning tea at which our guests received a commemorative Blackfriars school tie from Board Chair, Old Scholar and City of Prospect Mayor, David O’Loughlin (‘82).

The day provided the Blackfriars community with a wonderful opportunity to thank not only our Vietnam veterans but also every Old Scholar who has served our country in the Armed forces.

Mark Thompson spoke for all of our veterans in attendance in his very poignant Letter to the Editor that appeared in The Advertiser on the Friday following our assembly.

Last Wednesday 7th November I was one of 4 Vietnam Veterans, and all ‘old boys’ of Blackfriars Priory School who were guests of honour at the school’s Remembrance Day Ceremony held in the school’s gymnasium. Eight old boys served in Vietnam. I’m not sure why the guest list was restricted to Vietnam vets, but I suspected that we still had mobility and our ages added gravitas to the occasion. Senior students emceed the memorial service which was one of the best of its kind that I have attended. ‘I was only Nineteen’, the work of another old boy, John Schumann, was the background to a montage of video and photos from the Vietnam War. Fr Kevin’s homily acknowledged the sacrifice of all servicemen and women since the end of the Great War. He also touched on the death of Dominican priest Giuseppe Girotti, who was executed by the Nazis for helping Italian Jews escape . On behalf of the other veterans I would like to thank Top: Old Scholar Vietnam veterans (L-R): Tony Perry (‘62) , Mark Mr Cobiac, Principal of Blackfriars and the staff, Chair of the Thompson (‘66), Peter Meaney (‘65) and Barry Mouton (‘64) . 16 St Albert’s Day The Blackfriars 50 Plus Club Calling prospective members !

Since 2013 Blackfriars has been actively engaged with keeping in touch with our Old Scholars via our Reunion program, inviting past students from 1, 10, 20, 30 40 and 50 years ago “Back to Blacks”. The prospect of a 60 year reunion is certainly in the school’s thinking but time, combined with the very small student population in those early years of the 1950s, has made the 60 year reunion something to strive for in the future.

However, in an effort to stay in touch with our students from those very early years, an invitation was extended from Blackfriars to “Old Boys” to become part of what has been entitled the 50 Plus Club. The 50 Plus Club is an initiative to welcome back ALL Old Scholars who have left Blackfriars 50 years or more ago (i.e. pre-1968). As the years go by this group will steadily grow and we will acknowledge these special Old Scholars annually with our school community.

As an annual reunion, what better date to choose than that uniquely Blackfriars celebration of St Albert’s Day, 15 November. Generations of Old Scholars have fond recollections of the day’s holiday, provided by Blackfriars to remember, reflect about and honour our School’s Top: Inaugural 50+ Club members meeting current student leaders at patron - St Albert the Great. morning tea. The School Anthem (or Hymn to Right: Tom Wilson (‘64 ) proudly wearing his original Blackfriars cap. St Albert as it was also known when frequently sung in the 1960’s and 70’s) had gone into somewhat of a hibernation over the last 40 years. Old Scholar Tom Wilson (‘64) shared his recollection with current students as to life at Blackfriars circa 1956 and his insights as to the origins of the School Anthem. What was noted to the students was that whilst the Hymn to St Dominic is proudly sung in many Dominican forums over many years, the Hymn to St Albert is unique to just one very special location: Blackfriars Priory School. Accordingly, thanks to the industrious efforts of the very enthusiastic members of Blackfriars Junior Choir, with support from the inaugural members of the 50 Plus Club , the School Anthem was sung with gusto as the Recessional Hymn for the 2018 St Albert’s Day Mass.

Some of our 50 Plus Club guests were among the very first students to attend Blackfriars in the early 1950’s, some 65 years ago. After Mass, our guests joined in a morning tea with current students at which they viewed heritage films that have been recently found and donated to Blackfriars. Events such as the 1955 and 1956 Sports Days, the 1957 school fete, the presentation to Prefects in 1958 and the Fathers’ Club picnic in the Adelaide Hills in the same year, were just a few of the events featured on these historic records.

So, if you left Blackfriars before 1969 we’d love to welcome you in person to the 50 Plus Club on 15 November, 2019!

20 Old Scholars’ News

Sportsmen of the Year in 2017 - Champions in 2018 As every graduating year draws to a close at Blackfriars, attention turns to the annual Academic Assembly at Bonython Hall and the prize winners to be announced at this prestigious occasion.

One keenly contested Gold Medal award that sits adjacent the numerous academic awards is the Pier Giorgio Frassati Sportsman of the Year award.

Over many years graduates of Blackfriars have been acknowledged for excellence in a multitude of sports both major and minor on the state, national and international Old scholars and 2018 SANFL Premiership players Boyd Woodcock (‘17) and Mitch Harvey (‘13) along stage. In 2017, two outstanding graduates with match day runner, Graeme Kellett (‘93), celebrating the North Grand Final of Blackfriars, Carlo Armiento (Soccer) win at the traditional West End Chimney Ceremony. and Boyd Woodcock (Football) were joint recipients of the Frassati Sportsman of the Year Award.

However few would have predicted for a moment that these young men would go on to have the years that they have in their chosen sports in 2018. As individuals they have undoubtedly excelled but, as members of two very prominent local sporting clubs, they have both achieved the ultimate team success; success that many athletes crave but in some cases don’t achieve in their entire sporting careers.

In September, Boyd, as a member of the North Adelaide league team, was a major contributor for the Roosters winning every final to surprise even the most astute experts and win the SANFL Premiership for 2018 over Norwood, coming from bottom in 2017.

A few weeks later, on 30 October, Carlo was part of the Adelaide United squad that won the FFA Cup at Hindmarsh Stadium, defeating Sydney FC 2-1.

Since then, Carlo has signed his first professional contract with our local A-League team as a sure sign of his contribution to the club’s run through the FFA Cup.

For Boyd, the year has ended with his AFL future secured being elected by Port Adelaide FC as the 76th pick in the AFL draft

To Boyd and Carlo, on behalf of the wider Blackfriars community, congratulations on what you have achieved in 2018. May your sporting successes continue well into the future.
