Art History Lecture Series I, Witness: Five Artistic Responses to Conflicts of Their Time

Friday 28 February – Friday 3 April 10.15am – 12.15pm Abington Park Museum Join us for our twelfth series of art history lectures, this time investigating five artistic responses to contemporary conflict. From Paolo Uccello’s influential series of three paintings commemorating the 15th century victory of Florentine troops over the Sienese army, to Picasso’s damning artistic indictment following the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica through Nazi Germany in 1937. We shall explore a range of responses and the context in which they were made. Rather than taking its cues from the collection of the museum itself, this lecture series has been inspired by one of the first exhibitions scheduled to take place in the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery which features the Belfast series by local artist Chris Fiddes, depicting both Catholic and Protestant views of the Troubles of the early 1970s.
