Governors’ Introduction

Dear Parents and Guardians, Thanks for taking the time to read the school's 2017 / 2018 annual report. I hope it reflects the varied life at Ysgol y Castell which the pupils enjoy.

Pupils are at the core of everything we do and this report reflects that. Ysgol y Castell has numerous key objectives, but ultimately we seek to help the children to become aspirational citizens who strive for excellence. The Welsh language and culture is at the heart of this.

The Governors endeavor to appoint staff who can help the children have integrity and self respect, care about their , act as positive role models, use Welsh with ease and fluency, but above all enjoy their life and work at Ysgol y Castell. I believe we have a very strong team which is led very ably by Mrs Nuttall, but in these challenging and fast moving times, we recognise that we need to continue working well together to make sure our pupils' education remains of the highest standard.

At Ysgol Y Castell, we are proud of our curricular provision, learning experiences and the wealth of extra-curricular activities offered to pupils. All the experiences mentioned below ensure a wide and varied provision for all our pupils. All activities enrich their learning and inspire them to work to the best of their potential; with enjoyment, committment and towards a meaningful purpose.

Success and Celebrations

A number of extra-curricular activities are held throughout the including the Urdd Club, arts and crafts, sports of all kinds, choir, disco and folk dance, swapping football stickers, a reading club, a sewing club, science, writing and coding.

The school community and Sbarc and Seren launched the Welsh Language Charter and won the Bronze Award. The ‘Ysgol Y Castell Dragons’ have been established to celebrate and develop the school's Welsh ethos and they are now aiming to win the Welsh Language Charter Silver Award during the Autumn term 2018.

A book and animated film entitled ‘Tisian Trychinebus

Dewi’ were published by a group of Year 5 pupils following their work as part of the Lead Creative Schools Project. These pupils also had the privilege of being invited to the Tate Gallery in London to share their animation and hold creative workshops for the visiting public.

Class assemblies were celebrated throughout the year with each pupil taking part in his/her class and parents were welcomed to join their children to worship

The school competed at Eisteddfod Y Cymoedd. Ffion West (Year 5) won the photography competition with Sam Cheeseman (Yr.5) achieving second place. The Choir came second and the Unison Party was third in the singing competitions.

Harvest Festival saw our learners bringing donations to the local food bank. A special thanks to Rev. Milton Jenkins, Tonyfelin Chapel for the warm welcome to all our Junior Department pupils.

Pupils were offered weekly music lessons on the harp, violin, woodwind instruments and also recorder lessons for all Year 3 and 4 pupils and ukulele for all pupils in Year 5.

Key Stage 2 pupils engaged in Outdoor Education Activities during residential visits with Year 6 visiting Abernant, Year 5 visiting and Year 4 visiting to Urdd Camp, Cardiff.

The reading teams of Year 4 and Year 6 competed in the Book Quiz again this year, reading and discussing novels.

Our Hospital Ambassadors, Tayla Gallacher and Madeline Nicholas (both of Year 6), represented the school in the community promoting the Welsh language and working with a group of OAPs on a special project.

Book Day was celebrated with fun activities in each class and of course the fashion show. It was nice to see all the children and staff in their fancy dress, dressing as their favourite Welsh.

Once again, the school Eisteddfod gave well over 50 children in every department the opportunity to compete in reciting, singing, acting and dancing competitions. The winners of each competition represented the school in the local Urdd Eisteddfod.

St David's Day was celebrated with the annual Literary Eisteddfod. This year, Rhiannon Hughes was chaired and Olivia Nott was crowned as main writers during a special ceremony under the guidance of the Year 5 ‘Gorsedd’. The Eisteddfod Cup for the school with the highest overall marks was won once again by our pupils at the Local and County Eisteddfodau.

During the Whitsun Holiday, a host of children competed in the Brecon and Radnor Urdd National Eisteddfod of 2018 in the following competitions:

We had an excellent exhibition of art and craft work in school by our pupils. Winners were chosen to go on at the County Art Eisteddfod in Blackwood and the National Eisteddfod in Brecon and Radnor.

Year 6 pupils had the opportunity to engage in the County’s cycling proficiency scheme so they can safely ride their bikes on the road.

This year's Cogurdd cookery competition was won by Marley Spence and Dylan Williams who represented the school in the County's Cogurdd competition.

Monthly meetings continued to be held by Friends of the School to organize the school's successful community activities e.g. the Halloween disco, Dwynwen disco, afternoon tea, Easter Fun and summer barbecue.

Rugby, soccer, netball, gymnastics, athletics, cricket and tennis teams competed enthusiastically this year. There was huge success in the South East Wales cross country championship with the Year 5 and Year 6 team winning first place and Year 3 and 4 Boys coming second.

The swimming team had the opportunity to compete in the Urdd Swimming Gala. The Year 3 and 4 girls’ relay team won their race and progressed in the national competition in Cardiff.

The children had a day to remember in Ffiliffest enjoying all kinds of folk dances and celebrating their Welshness with other children from the valley.

Anti-Bullying Week and Healthy Schools Week ensured a number of stimulating activities for all pupils throughout the school.

Year 6 pupils wrote, practised and performed their own scenes from the myth ‘Cantre’r Gwaelod’ as part of a joint Creative Project between the feeder schools and Ysgol Y Gwyndy, Cwm Rhymni.

We are a Welsh medium school who immerse the Foundation Phase pupils in Welsh to ensure their bilingualism. English is introduced in Key Stage 2.

A REVIEW OF GOVERNOR'S ACTIVITY FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2017/18

This academic year gave us plenty of reasons to celebrate. As a governing body we were delighted to celebrate our categorisation as a ‘green’ school. The Welsh Government’s National School Categorisation System guide explains that ‘A wide range of information is used to categorise schools. This includes information on how a school is led and managed, the quality of learning and teaching, and the level of support and challenge needed to improve.’ And that ‘the categorisation colour shows the level of support a school needs, with the schools in the green category needing the least support. Achieving this target was a key priority for the school and the announcement was the culmination of a great deal of hard work by all involved.

During the year we welcomed three new governors; two new parent governors (Sian Baldwin and Kate Hall) and a Community Governor (Cllr. Adrian Stone), each of whom has already made a valuable contribution to our work.

Collectively, throughout the year, we have helped develop the school’s key priorities, which included:

 Continuing to raise standards of boys’ writing throughout the school.  Ensuring that more able pupils are challenged consistently throughout the school.  Continuing to close the gap between the attainment and attendance of pupils who are eligible for free school meals and their peers.  Ensure continuity in good or better standards of teaching through a mentoring programme designed to support, challenge and raise standards of all staff at school.

In addition to our half-termly meetings and various sub-committees, each year governors are also offered numerous opportunities to visit the school and observe day to day activities, which in 2017-18, included learning walks with the School Council to observe the Language Charter and with More Able and Talented Learners which included a book scrutiny to get a better understanding of the school’s assessment methods. We had an opportunity, alongside parents, to learn more about the school’s use of Chromebooks, attended the launch of the Language Charter and had frequent opportunities to celebrate our pupils’ talents at assemblies and eisteddfodau.

As we look towards another exciting year ahead we would like to take the time to thank the entire school community for their on-going support in the success of what we’re sure you’ll agree is a fantastic learning environment for our pupils.

Progress report on School Development Plan (2017 – 2018)

Target Continue to close the gap between the attainment and attendance of pupils eligible for free school meals with their peers. (R1 – PIAP)

Activities and Impact  Families worked with the school on a project to raise aspirations by visiting South Wales University. Together they learned about the opportunities available to them through further education. This outstanding provision was shared with YGG Caerffili and Ysgol Ifor Bach.  100% of KS2 pupils receive free music lessons each week for one term.  A high percentage of FSM pupils are now attending extra-curricular activities during lunch hours or after school.  66% of children have reached O5 (FPI) in year 2 by the end of the Foundation Phase. This equates to two pupils who have not achieved the expected outcome.  In key stage 2, 91% of FSM pupils achieved level 4+ in both languages.  91% of FSM pupils achieved level 4+ in mathematics and science (18% at level 5+ maths and 9% at L5 + Science).  Strong transition processes are in place for FSM learners and they visit Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni on a termly basis. In addition to this, a group of our year 5 children visited Cardiff Bay with Y Gwyndy staff.  The gap between the attendance of FSM children and the rest of the school for 2017/18 was -1.61%, which is better than an average of -2.72% for the last academic year. This is also closer to our target of -1%.  There was a significant improvement in the numbers of FSM children with attendance over 95%, with 50% of KS2 FSM children higher than this figure by July 2018. (Increased by 27% in KS2 and 11% in FP since January 2018). This is due to the school targeting FSM children in the Yellow band (between 90% and 95%). This data sets us above all Wales figures for KS2 during 2017 (45%).

Target - Ensure that more able pupils are consistently challenged across the school (R2 – PIAP)

Activities and Impact  Most MAT pupils across the school have met their challenging targets.  The NACE assessor agrees that the school is almost ready to receive the full assessment of NACE. A report was provided by the assessor that has two targets for each standard (10 matrix standards) to be implemented and completed by the final assessment in the Autumn Term 2018.  Children's success is recognized in the school through our Twitter account. All the children testify that they are greatful for the rich opportunities provided by the school.  The consistent use of the new marking policy across the school has a positive effect on extended writing work for most MAT learners.  There is clear evidence of effective differentiation in almost every piece of work to meet the needs of all learners.  Children are given opportuniteis to undertake extended writing tasks through cross- curricular themes. There are many opportunities for children to apply literacy skills across the curriculum, especially in science lessons.  Use of 'Google Classroom' provides opportunities for all MAT learners to improve their ICT skills in line with the digital competence framework. As a result, learners succeed in achieving digital competence standards above the expected level on a regular basis and are confident in using it across the curriculum.  Governors are fully aware of MAT procedures and challenge the school well in measuring children's progress.

Target - Share the good and outstanding practice in teaching across the school (R3 – PIAP)

Activities and Impact  Sharing of good practice has been implemented over a number of years. This year there was a specific focus on assessment for learning strategies in line with Donaldson's recommendations for pedagogy.  Mrs Lowri Griffiths (Assessment Leader) led an INSET day with the focus on assessment for learning, planning to ensure challenge and independence and responding to written feedback. The school's Marking and Feedback Policy was adapted as a result of the training.  When scrutinising books following this training, most books were seen to reflect the high expectations of the teachers. This was true in terms of the presentation and the level of challenge of the tasks set.  Effective feedback (whether verbally or in writing) lead to children successfully improving their work. Verbal feedback throughout the session is now a strength across the school.  Comments on children’s work are in line with the marking code and are easy for children to understand. Children have opportunities to respond to feedback comments across many KS2 classes and at the top of the FP.  Provision within most classes offeres challenge for all learners. Most staff have high expectations and effective differentiation of work is a strength.  A maths INSET day was led by Mr G. Hughes and Miss S. Griffiths (Leader of Numeracy).  Year 6 teachers and Mr Hughes worked closely with Y Gwyndy Cluster schools to develop innovative teaching and learning strategies. This included opportunities to share good practice.  Very good feedback was received from other Year 6 and 7 cluster staff for teaching and learning practices in year 6.  Many examples of good practive exist in the school in terms of developing numeracy across the curriculum (this is part of our focus as a pioneer school). As a result, there is very good progress in the numeracy skills of most pupils across the curriculum.

★ Target 3 – Embrace curriculum reform; ensuring staff’s understanding of its principles and content, embed learners’ voice in planning and enrich opportunities for parental engagement in their child’s learning.

★ Target 4 - Raise standards of teaching (and learning) through Critical Collaborative Professional Enquiry to encompass the requirements for the new professional teaching standards.

Toilet Facilities

The school completed the third year of their planned 4 year scheme to replace all toilet facilities. Cleaners are employed by Caerphilly LA to clean the toilets twice a day, ensuring a sufficient supply of toilet paper, soap and hot water. The temperature of the water is checked on a weekly basis by the caretaker. Unannounced hygiene inspections took place and all toilets were deemed to be of a satisfactory standard.

In addition, the school will be closed for five further teacher training days. These will be notified to you in due course through text message and they will be published on the school’s website. This calendar meets the statutory requirements of 195 days, of which 190 are spent with pupils present and five for teacher training.

Children of Foundation Stage age are required by the National Curriculum to work a minimum of 21.5 hours a week (excluding breaks, assembly and registration). Children of Key Stage Two age should work a minimum of 23.5 hours per week.

Access for Disabled Pupils

Ysgol Y Castell welcomes children with special needs and abilities. To ensure that all children have equal access to the curriculum, the SENCO, class teachers, Headteacher and outside agencies will work together to provide for each individual’s needs. The school’s Equal Opportunities policy and policy for Special Educational Needs explain this in more detail.

The building itself has limitations as far as access for disabled persons is concerned. There is ramp access to the main building, hall and external classrooms. Although the school has two disabled toilet facilities, physical access in some areas remains difficult.

Where possible, arrangements will be made to accommodate disabled pupils and visitors.

Additional Learning Needs

Whilst we encourage all children in Ysgol Y Castell to work to their full potential, we recognise that some children will require some extra support at times during their school career.

We place these children on our register of Additional Learning Needs (ALN) and our Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinator (ALENCo) then assists the class teacher, parents and children to write:-

 an Individual Educational Plan (IEP),

 Individual Behaviour Plan (IBP),

 Play Plan for younger children, which will set out a programme of work for that child to follow.

The ALENCo (Mrs S. Curran) also liaises with parents, other staff, the school nurse, Speech and Language therapists and the Psychology Service. The school takes advice and support from the LA, through Inclusion Services, which covers all of the above agencies as well as Behaviour Support and the Hearing and Visual Impairment services.

Some pupils require intensive 1:1 support; some receive a few hours a week to under take specific tasks and others are supported in smaller groups. Most children are supported within the classroom, with differentiated work and teacher support. Our school is an inclusive one, and we welcome pupils with a wide variety of needs and abilities into our mainstream classes. All pupils are fully involved in day to day activities, both within the school and in the community.

MAT Provision

At Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg y Castell we recognise and support the needs of those children who have been identified as more able and talented (MAT) according to the NACE guidelines in one or more areas of learning.

It is our aim to ensure individual children are encouraged to develop their attributes, skills and potential within a learning environment that embraces equality of opportunity and provision. We are also committed to identifying and meeting the needs of these young children as early as possible in order to enable them to achieve their potential.

Over the last year we have made huge progress in our MAT provision. Mr Robinson has written a policy, implemented workshops for the KS2 pupils and a writing squad for year 2.

Year 6 MAT pupils were given a business and leadership scheme and they chose to do a fayre. They organised everything and sold to pupils, staff and parents.

The MAT pupils are leading the learning giving them great opportunities to help others improve their skills. Excellent examples of this are the Creative School Projects and the role of Digital Ambassadors, Sports Playleaders and Dreigiau’r Castell.

The next academic year is an exciting time as we have our NACE assessment, new workshops and projects for the MAT pupils across the school. We also have new apps on the iPads to improve ICT. The school has also been accepted as a Lead Network School for MAT to lead and support other schools that are looking to improve their MAT provision. We are also looking to engage with other areas outside of school that pupils could be MAT e.g sport based clubs, drama, arts and music.

We aim to ensure that all our pupils have access to the curriculum, no matter what their needs and abilities, and we will continue to use a range of support mechanisms and services to achieve this.

The Governing Body

The Governing Body is responsible for the effective management of the school. There are seventeen Governors (including the Head teacher in an ex-officio capacity). Terms of office are normally four years and the Full Governing Body is currently constituted as shown below.
