GAME THREE // NORTHERN KENTUCKY 2014-15 ILLINOIS STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES PREPARING FOR CONFERENCE PLAY The Illinois State women’s basketball team has never shied away from a tough non-conference schedule, and the 2014-15 season is no diff erent. ISU will play 11 games during the non-conference schedule, including six home contests and one exhibition game. The Redbirds will take on four opponents that won their respective conferences in 2013-14, including Bowling Green, Colorado State, DePaul and Tennessee-Martin. Seven of the non-conference foes made postseason appearances, as Arizona State, DePaul and Tennessee-Martin appeared in the NCAA Tournament, while Bowling Green, Butler and Colorado State participated in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT), with Northern Kentucky in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI). REDBIRDS PICKED EIGHTH IN MVC The Illinois State women’s basketball team was projected to fi nish eighth in the Missouri Valley Conference Preseason Poll for the 2014-15 season, as voted on by the league’s head coaches, sports information directors and media. Illinois State received 125 votes in the poll with its eighth-place selection, a change of pace since ISU has been picked in the top-fi ve in 19 of the 32 preseason polls in conference history. It is the second time in school history the Redbirds have been picked to fi nish eighth, with the thero time coming last season. The eighth-place selections have been ISU’s lowest preseason projection since the 2003-04 season, when Illinois State was selected to fi nish ninth. The 2003-04 squad wenton to end the conference season in fi fth place. Wichita State is the preseason favorite to win the conference with 395 points and 26 fi rst-place votes, and is followed by Northern Iowa (338). The Panthers garnered two fi rst-place votes, while Drake (315), Evansville (252) and Indiana State (234) rounded out the top-fi ve teams. Drake was the only other team to receive fi rst-place votes, collecting two. Missouri State is projected to fi nish sixth (190), with Loyola (166) following behind in seventh place. The Redbirds are picked to fi nish ahead of Southern Illinois (116) and Bradley (60), how occupy the fi nal two spots in the preseason poll. ISU was selected to fi nish eighth during the 2013-14 season and ended the regular season tied for sixth place. MORE MINUTES Prior to the 2013-14 season, ISU lost several of its key players and most of its minutes played. Now, heading into the 2014-15 season, the Redbirds are singing a diff erent tune, as ISU returns 76 percent of its minutes. BIG SHOES TO FILL Illinois State will have to replace graduated seniors Chloe Nelson and Alison Seberger in 2014-15, which will be a tough task to overcome since Nelson led the team in several categories, including total points and points per game. The Redbirds will also have to replace Alexis Foley due to a transfer. Nelson earned all-conference honors, as well as being named an All-Valley Scholar- Athlete First Team selection .

FAMILIAR FACES After fi nishing tied for sixth in the Missouri Valley Conference during the 2013-14 season, the Illinois State women’s basketball team returns several familiar faces from last year’s squad in 2014-15. ISU lost two starters, and returns three starters and several others who have started during their ISU careers and eight total letterwinners. With the large group of returners, the Redbirds hope to keep the success from last season going into the upcoming campaign. Along with the returners, ISU will welcome three newcomers, as Lexie Taylor will have to sit out the 2014-15 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

A NEW LOOK ISU welcomed four transfers during the off season.Mary Sims, Colleene Smith and Kelli Tolar will add depth to the guard position. Lexie Taylor, a walk-on, will have to sit out the 2013-14 season due to NCAA transfer rules. Sims came to Illinois State from State Fair Community College, where she played in 24 games with 15 starts. She averaged 6.6 points per game, while averaging 2.3 assists per game. C. Smith is a shooting guard who can use her height and drop down to play in the post if necessary. C. Smith, who transfered from ASA College, was the team’s second-leading scorer during the 2013-14 season, averaging 14 points and nine rebounds per game. For her performance, she received National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-America honorable- mention accolades. Tolar, a transfer from Dodge City, played in 28 games with 27 starts, averaging 18 points per game during the 2013-14 season. Tolar made 41.3 percent of her fi eld goal attempts and sank 40 percent of her shots from beyond the arc. She will look to add depth to the shooting guard position. REDBIRD TOP-RETURNERS Illinois State returns three Redbirds, who led nine categories during the 2013-14 season. Lindsay Smith led ISU in three categories at the end of the last season, including steals (33), free throw percentage (.896) and three-point fi eld goal percentage (.304).Octavia Crump was at the top of the stat sheet in all four rebounding categories, including total rebounds (186), rebounds per game (6.2), off ensive boards (64) and defensive boards (122). Crump also led the team in fi eld goal percentage, connecting on2 5 percent of her shots. Kalyn Gebhardt was the last Redbird to lead a category during the 2013-14 season, as she collected a team-high 11 blocks. JET SETTERS The Illinois State women’s basketball team will travel to Miami, Florida, over Thanksgiving to compete in the four-team Miami Tournament. The Redbirds open the tournament against host Miami at noon (CST) on Nov. 28. ISU will then compete against either the Buff alo or Tulsa on Nov. 29. THE SMITH ERA The 2014-15 Illinois State women’s basketball team will be led by head coach Barb Smith, as she begins her second season at the helm of the Redbirds. Smith has 27 years of Division I collegiate coaching experience, is the seventh head coach in Illinois State history. Smith is known as a prominent recruiter, with over ten top-20 nationally-ranked classes. Most recently, Smith spent the 2012-13 season at Saint Louis University as the associate head coach, recruiting coordinator and off ensive coordinator. At SLU, Smith directed and organized all recruiting activities, designed and implemented off ensive strategies and was responsible for guard development. Smith has also been an assistant coach at Minnesota, California and Colorado. During Smith’s fi ve seasons (1997- 2002) as the head coach at San Diego State, the Aztecs landed the highest-ranked recruiting class in program history and featured guard Claire Swinbank, the team’s fi rst WNBA prospect. Smith also built SDSU into one of the Mountain West Conference’s top-defensive teams, with the 2000-01 Aztecs fi nishing second in the league in defense.
