The cycleway passes under Parramatta Road below the original arch bridge known as “Battle Bridge”

In this location the constraints are:

1. Vertical alignment:

(a) The beams and pipes hung from the underside of the bridge, which the cycleway must pass under with 2.4 m clearance from the cycling surface.

(b) The 500 mm diameter water pipe on the southern side which the cycleway must pass over.

2. Horizontal alignment:

(a) The concrete encasement around a 750 mm diameter water pipe along the face of the western bridge abutment. (b) The valve and associated steel frames for the 500 mm diameter water pipe on the southern side of the bridge. (c) A 500 mm to 750 mm diameter water pipe below ground south of the bridge and beside the canal. (d) The bridge abutments.

On the southern side of the bridge leading south, the canal turns to the east relative to the alignment of the bridge abutments. This has the effect of providing ground on the western side of the canal to support the cycleway immediately south of the bridge.

On the northern side of the bridge there are privately owned land holdings up to the western edge of the canal. This has the effect of eliminating any land for vertical support for the cycleway on the western side of the canal.

On the northern side of the bridge there is a retaining wall on the eastern side of the canal which is suitable with simple modification, for supporting the loads from the cycleway.

The 100 year ARI flood water level (RL +3.81 (AHD)) is above the pipes which cross the canal south of the bridge, and above the required level of the cycleway (RL 2.80 to 2.67) for clearance to the pipes and beams under the bridge.

In a flood event debris is likely to build up against the pipes across the canal.

Having regard for the constraints, the route of the cycleway at the Parramatta Road Bridge has been:

Greenway Cycleway Lighting

There is an Australian Standard that makes recommendations for the lighting parameters for public areas including cycleways. The standard is AS/NZS1158.3.1 Lighting for roads and public spaces Part 3.1: Pedestrian area (Category P) lighting- Performance and design requirements. While the standard is not mandatory it gives a good indication of a duty of care. The standard recommends different levels based on the ‘level of night time activity’, the ‘risk of crime’ and the ‘need to enhance the prestige’ of the space. The client has nominated Category P2 for the cycleway. P2 is for high levels of night activity and a medium risk of crime. Table 1 shows the lighting parameters recommended in the standard for Category P2 Lighting.

Table 1: Category P2 Light technical parameters from AS1158.3.1

P10 is a special category for subways and bridges which takes into account the limited number of escape routes and the reduced natural surveillance. The underpasses have the additional problem that by day there is a large reduction in illumination as you enter from bright sunlight. Although the eye automatically adapts to the changes in illuminance, this process is not instantaneous and a cyclist may be into the space before their eyes have adjusted. As a result it is necessary to light the underpass to a higher level by day than by night. The lighting will be controlled to automatically switch the lighting to 50% at sunset.

Table 2 shows the recommended light technical parameters for Category P10 lighting. These are the design level for the night time operation of the lighting. By day the illumination level will be increased to an average of 100 lux with the concentration of the lighting being in the zones near the entrance. This will reduce the sharp change from the external to the internal illumination level.
