MONDAY, MAY 3, 2021 MEDINA SPIRIT FINE AFTER DERBY WIN HOW TO BUY A DERBY Zedan Racing's Medina Spirit (Protonico) exited his win in WINNER FOR $1,000 Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby in fine shape, according to trainer Bob Baffert, who said he would wait a week before committing the colt to the May 15 GI Preakness S. AHe came out of it well,@ Baffert said Sunday morning. AIt takes about a week to determine, so I=m going to come back next weekend and see. But I don=t see anything discouraging right now.@ Baffert continued, ACan he win the Triple Crown? I don=t know. But he=s the Derby winner, and that=s all that matters. I was coming in here, thinking, I wasn=t sure [if Medina Spirit could win the Derby], everything had to go perfect for him. We were going to go to the lead, and see what happened. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2019 CURLIN REIGNS SUPREME DOWN AND POSSIBLY OUT, BRICKS AND MORTAR HAS CLIMBED TO THE TOP AT SARATOGA By Mike Kane At this time last year Bricks and Mortar (Giant's Causeway) was starting over, re-learning the lessons that had enabled him to become a standout 3-year-old turf runner in 2017. Though he was nine months removed from career-saving surgery performed by Dr. Larry Bramlage at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., there was no guarantee that he would be able to regain the brilliance. While sport is littered with tales of athletes who never could make a full comeback from injury, Bricks and Mortar is an unqualified success story. In this second chapter he has won all five of his starts--three of them in Grade I races this year--is top-ranked in the NTRA poll and is the 8-5 morning-line favorite in the Saturday's GI Arlington Million at Arlington Park. • The Scholarship of Cedric J. Robinson: Methodological Considerations for Africana Studies
The Scholarship of Cedric J. Robinson: Methodological Considerations for Africana Studies by Joshua Myers, M.A. Department of African American Studies Temple University Joshua Myers ([email protected]) is a doctoral candidate in the Department of African American Studies at Temple University. Abstract Africana Studies has waged a successful battle to extend curriculum models and course offerings to include the experiences of peoples of African descent. Forty years after this battle over course content, we see not only the legacy of Black Studies continuing (despite the initial decline of departments), but traditional disciplines and "new" disciplines offering courses that deal with Black content. The question then becomes for Africana Studies scholars, what marks us a distinct? This paper examines the scholarship of Cedric Robinson as an exemplar and considers its methodological approaches as plausible alternatives for a distinct approach to Africana Studies. It is an effort not aimed at negating previous conversations, and is purposed on contributing to some of the (re)current themes in the prevailing discourses on Africana Studies methodology. Introduction Africana Studies, as both an academic discipline and an intellectual space of the Africana freedom struggle, has been at the vanguard of the fight for the inclusion of the experiences of African and African-descended people in the annals and curriculum of the Western educational matrix.1 This system has spread its tentacles throughout global society, and many of the formal educational structures in place in Africa and throughout her Diaspora represent the vestiges of the European intellectual and imperial order. Many of our forerunners, ancestors who sacrificed much in an attempt to make education relevant for Africans wherever they found themselves on the landscape of a different world, provided contributions to this 46 The Journal of Pan African Studies, vol.5, no.4, June 2012 discussion that were indeed indispensable.

  • Aeneid Iii: Aeneas’ Voyage Per Imperium
AENEID III: AENEAS’ VOYAGE PER IMPERIUM by B. TODD THOMASON (Under the Direction of Sarah Spence) ABSTRACT This thesis is an analysis of Aeneas’ stops at Crete, Mt. Etna, Thrace, Buthrotum, Drepanum, Delos, the Strophades, Actium, and Castrum Minervae in Aeneid III. Of these nine landfalls, six are part of the traditional Aeneas legend while three appear to be Vergilian inventions. The purpose of this study is to analyze the actions and experiences of the Trojans in these various locations in an effort to discover why Vergil selected these particular settings for Aeneas’ adventures. The episodes are divided into those that celebrate Rome’s triumph over the Greek East and those that expose the pain, hardship, and even irony inherent in that triumph with the goal of revealing Vergil’s objective assessment of the empire in which he lived. Pliny himself begins the text of his Natural History with a detailed list of his sources, and he thereby affirms one of the text’s central messages – namely, that at any point in human history, a man’s individual achievements are dependent upon the achievements of the human species as a whole and upon the antecedent efforts of the members of the previous generation to pass on the collective patrimony of the human race.
