East Kilbride is situated some twelve miles south of . Formerly, a large village, it was designated as the first of ’s new towns and I now a thriving industrial community, with new factories and businesses. Many of the present inhabitants have moved to the town from Glasgow. In 1990, the East Kilbride Development Corporation decided to encapsulate the community spirit of the new town in an especially commissioned tartan. This was designed by Dr. Teall of Teallach on behalf of the Scottish Tartans Society. The tartan has red as its predominant color and the secondary colors have been chosen to echo the symbolism of the ensigns armorial granted by the Lord Lyoin King of Arms as follows:

White/Silver and Blue Stewarts of Torrance White/Silver and Black Maxwells of Calderwood Red and White Lindsays White/Silver and Black Industry Green and Gold Agriculture The colors and various features of the proposed East Kilbride District tartan are to be found also in the tartans indirectly associated with East Kilbride - Gordon, Maxwell, Stewart and Lindsay. In particular, the yellow stripe of the Gordon sett appears in the East Kilbride tartan to commemorate the first provost, John Gordon. A rug made from the East Kilbride tartan was presented to H.M. The Queen on her official visit to East Kilbride in 1990.
