Auto Fest 2015

September 2015

By Ken Gordon

Se ptember is a beautiful month, but unfortunately it marks the end of most car shows.I missed that beautiful weekend at AutoFest and really didn't get to any shows in August at all. Because Marilyn & I were unable to enjoy our cottage the entire month of July, we vowed not to miss any weekends in August (and we didn't). One show that is coming up is the Quad C Appreciation Show at the Senick Farm on September 12th. Then there's the Markham Show Sunday September 13th (Contact Brian Lindow if you are interested in attending). The last show of the season is Pineridge Corvette Club's Summers End Show September 20th at Shake, Rabble & Roll. The August General Meeting was at the Bluffers Park Yacht Club and was well attended with members contributing to the pot luck dinner and lending a hand to our hosts Bruce & Curleen. It was a great night as always and we had a huge assortment of food. Jan & David did an amazing job taking over for Cathy who couldn't attend due to an addition to their family. Congratulations Cathy & Rocco on your new grandson! Thanks Bruce & Curleen for hosting once again. Our next General Meeting will also be an offsite meeting. It was originally to be held at the Waterfront but due to issues had to be changed to the Lonestar at Kingston & Whites Road. This will be held Wednesday September 16th and please let Cathy know if you plan to attend (905-985-7896). It may seem early but Angelika will have Christmas Dance tickets available so bring your cheque books. Our big event of the season is the celebration of Corvettes of Durham's 15th Anniversary to be held Sunday September 27th at Purple Woods Heritage Hall between 1:00pm- 4:00pm. There will be Club history exhibits, displays of achievements, presentations, surprise guests, hot & cold hors d'ouvres, 50/50 draw, a cash bar and many more surprises. There will be more details to follow. The Raven's and their committee promise it will be an afternoon that you do not want to miss. The Fern Resort Weekend (October 3rd&4th) is coming up quick as well. Unfortunately Marilyn & I had to cancel our reservation due to her second hip surgery scheduled for the middle of this month. We'll really miss all the fun with you guys, but hope everyone has a great time. Finally, a big congratulations to Ron Langlois for having his Corvette featured in a Chevrolet commercial on CTV during Canada ads. Your Corvette looks great Ron!

See You Soon

Ken

Update from Cathy Nunno

COD Social Director

Dear Corvette Friends,

Thank you for making the August Off Site General Meeting a huge success. About 63 people attended Scarborough Bluffers Park Yacht Club.

Thank you to:

Bruce and Curleen for hosting the evening. Jan and Dave and Shirley for taking charge of the event. Paul Arsenault and John Gvazdaitis for BBQ'ing the Burgers and Sausages. Everyone for contributing all the wonderful food that made up the menu. It sounded like a real feast. Jan Raven will do the write up for this event so I'll move on to SEPTEMBER.

Wednesday September 16 is our next Off Site General Meeting and the last one for 2015. It will be held at LONESTAR TEXAS BAR AND GRILL in Pickering. This is a change from the planned Waterfront Bistro and Cafe. Lonestar has reserved a large room which will accommodate 60 people. Anytime after 5:30pm for dinner and meeting will begin at 7:30pm.

Don't forget to mark Sunday September 27, 2015 on your calendar to celebrate the COD 15th Anniversary at Purple Woods Conservation Heritage Hall on Simcoe St at Coates Rd. Plan to join us for a memorable afternoon from 12pm to 4pm. Details will follow from Jan Raven. She will have us all involved on a crew for the occasion.

Thank you so much to Gilles and Linda Landry for co-ordinating the Autofest 2015 weekend at Lakeview Park Oshawa. We had a wonderful time, lots of Corvettes, and fabulous weather!

As usual, please let Cathy know if you will attend Lonestar on Sept. 16 and Jan or Cathy if you are coming to the 15th anniversary party.

Thank you!

August Off-site Meeting at Bluffers

Some of us had a good idea - Bluffer’s is always so much fun we think we should make it a full day event instead of an off-site meeting. Of course, we haven’t checked yet with Bruce and Curleen who, once again, were our very accommodating, fantastic hosts.

Cathy, our wonderful Social Director, had to miss this Bluffer’s due to the birth of her new grandson so she asked me if I would oversee this event. Well, true to fashion, Cathy had everything done. She had arranged for the large variety of salads, all made by our own members. Everything was delicious. We also had appetizers and a whole load of desserts. Cathy even colour co-ordinated the paper plates and napkins.

After I was given a four page list of instructions, I asked Shirley to help. We shopped for the hamburgers and sausages and the rest of the stuff. The only thing missing were the barbecuers. Who would we get? Good ol’ Paul, even though he’s been practicing for a big gig next month, he agreed to barbecue. So at 4:00 p.m., Bruce, Curleen, Paul, Shirley, David and I were all set up at Bluffer’s.

Bruce and Dorothy were leading the pack from Canadian Tire in Pickering. From the second floor of the clubhouse, we had a great view of all the beautiful Corvettes parading into the parking lot. They really do come in a lot of pretty colours.

The tables were set out, the barbecue was on but we needed an extra barbecue due to the large amount (big surprise) of members who turned out. John G. offered to help Paul barbecue. We had the two best barbecuers in the world out on the deck cooking for over 60 of our members. All of the food was fantastic.

Almost everyone was wearing a name tag. If they hadn’t brought it with them, they were making them out of scrap paper and sticking it on a button. We had a draw for everyone wearing a name tag and Fran DeBono won.

Gus had his cousin from Greece join us. I hope he went home with fond memories.

Dave C. promoted Consumer Tire and gave us all a can of Invisible Glass. Thank you Dave!

We missed first lady Marilyn, who is recovering from hip surgery.

John Robinson won the 50/50 and returned half of it back to the club. Thank you John.

And a great big, big thank you to all of our club members for their contributions to this great night and especially Bruce, Curleen, Paul, John G., Cathy and our very own “never stop working” Shirley!!

AutoFest 2015 was a huge success!

Corvettes of Durham had a really great showing of Corvettes. On Saturday we had 24 Corvettes and on Sunday we had another 22 Corvettes join in AutoFest .

With the $10.00 entry fee, Corvettes of Durham gave Motor City Car Club $310.00. All monies go to the Grandview Children's Centre. Mother Nature certainly had a spectacular weekend for us. Sunshine for both days. It could not have been any better.

Thank you to all who participated in AutoFest!! We met a lot of new people, made some new friends and just had a lot of fun looking at the many cars that AutoFest attracts and of course just sitting around with our club members.

Motor City Car Club was very impressed with Corvettes of Durham and told us they love having us participate.

Last but not least, our very own Ron Langlois won the Gary Burghoff award for his stunning 1960 RestoMod Corvette. Bravo Ron! She is a beauty!

See you all next year for AutoFest 2016!
