The gel can be squeezed out of a tube, so there’s no need to swallow the pills or drink water that could be unclean. Hey 23_FA_TP.indd 2 15/7/15 8:39 am CONGRATULATIONS... Shooting star It’s offi cial – NTU is top in research in Singapore. In Nature Index 2015 Global – a ranking of high-quality science research from global institutions – NTU ranked 40th in the world and fi rst in Singapore. The university also outclassed the likes of Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge Universities in chemistry, and Cornell University and Imperial College London in physical sciences. And in the latest ranking of Asian universities by Quacquarelli HEARTFELT WIN Symonds, NTU leapt to 4th place, up from 7th last year. Hey 23_FA_TP.indd 5 15/7/15 8:41 am FRANK QUEK Frank grains DOUBLE DEGREE IN BUSINESS & COMPUTER SCIENCE In his second year at NTU, Frank Quek had already started his fi rst business venture. of wisdom His latest venture, Th inkRice.SG, is an e-commerce platform that sells freshly s milled Japanese rice to consumers. bos The SELLING MY DREAMS in Computers and technology are things I’ve is always been interested in. I represented my secondary school and Ngee Ann Polytechnic in robotic competitions. Now, here I am, combining my knowledge of computer science with good old business strategies. RULES OF THE REAL WORLD My interest in e-commerce peaked when I did my internship at Adidas Singapore. Its online store had just been launched and I was tasked to help with its marketing campaign, which resulted in two consecutive months of record-breaking sales. I learnt about web analytics, data reporting and social media – all very useful now for my business. DAD KNOWS BEST My father is an entrepreneur too and he showed me there’s no substitute for hard work. As a kid, I watched him settle problems at work. One thing he doesn’t advocate is jumping straight into starting a business without getting a proper education fi rst. In his words: How are you supposed to run a successful business, if you don’t know the business processes behind it?

STRIKING THE RIGHT BALANCE Running my business as I did my double degree programme was really tough. I tried my best to manage my time. I wouldn’t say I ended up with the best grades, but the secret of staying ahead is not to procrastinate. I started on projects as early as possible and ensured my group mates were also working on them to avoid clashes in deadlines later.

FAILURE IS AN OPTION Ironically, studying made me realise there’s more to life than grades and getting a degree. Grades alone are just a snapshot of ourselves in time and we need more than that to be useful in the workplace. A huge part of education is about experiencing through failing – the people who learn the most are not the ones who ace the exams, but those who persevere and continue learning long aft er the exams are over. 6

Hey 23_FA_TP.indd 6 15/7/15 1:11 pm Deborah Loh was off ered a job as a management trainee with Muji aft er winning a business proposal competition. Life gets more exciting as she heads for Konnichiwa. in October as an expatriate. Ganbatte! MY YEN FOR THE LAND OF THE RISING SUN Japan I’ve always had an interest in Japan. In school, I took Japanese as my third language. I visited Hamamatsu DEBORAH LOH and Kobe on exchange programmes, where I lived COMMUNICATION STUDIES with my host families for a few weeks. Japan feels like a second home to me… and now I’m going to be working there! I FLEW TO TOKYO FOR AN INTERVIEW AND GOT A LIFELONG CONTRACT I noticed posters around campus about a business proposal competition for students keen to work in Japan. I decided to take part and, to my surprise, I won the top prize in the Muji category and was sent to Tokyo for an interview with the management. I was off ered the job – a lifelong contract – soon aft er. I think having a good understanding of the Muji brand, keeping an open mind and having an adventurous spirit got me the job. JUST DO IT Go for it if you want something, be it a particular module, a spot for overseas exchange, or a job at your dream company. Don’t be afraid that you won’t attain it or that you’re not good enough. Even if your eff ort comes to nothing, that’s all right – at least you tried! PET PROJECTS I’ve always loved animals and actually wanted to be a vet. I gave up on that dream as there were no veterinary courses in Singapore. My second love is design and art, which is why I majored in advertising. I’ve always wanted my future job to have a creative element and Muji’s clean and sleek product designs appeal to me. I would love to design a product for Muji someday. I LOVE NTU, BECAUSE… When I picked NTU, I didn’t know what I was in for. All I knew was that the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication & Information is one of the best in Asia. Aft er four years there, I know why others should choose it. Th ere’s so much talent and my professors are nurturing and supportive. At NTU, I also got to take really fun modules like traditional medicine, life drawing, introductory French and advanced practical Japanese.

I HAD A COLOURFUL UNI LIFE I joined the main committee for my school’s annual theatre production, Paparazzi, and was also a facilitator for the freshmen orientation camp. As an introvert, immersing myself in these activities helped me widen my social circle. I know these friendships will always be a part of my life.

Hey 23_FA_TP.indd 19 15/7/15 9:07 am Bright lights, popular stars and buzzing vibe – just three ways to describe NTU Fest 2015. With the resounding success of last year’s inaugural event, this year’s NTU Fest is even more special as we celebrate Singapore’s 50th birthday. Held on 29 August at The Promontory @ Marina Bay, the free public event will be opened by Singapore’s Minister for Education, Mr Heng Swee Keat. A little bird told us there may be a surprise performance from the Minister. Like last year, there will be a huge carnival with food and game booths, as well as a fi ve-kilometre fun run for adults and even two runs for children under 12. Proceeds from the fun run will be donated to SportCares, a charity that uses sports to teach values and character development to underprivileged children and youths-at-risk. So get healthy Jeff rey Xu and do your part for charity! If you’d rather sit back, relax and be entertained, you’re in for a good time. Over 11 NTU student groups, including MJ Hip Hop and hall bands such as Sabby and the Cats, will begin performing from 2pm, so there’s really no reason not to head down early to catch them in the act. To mark our nation’s Golden Jubilee, there will be an exhibition showcasing the creative works of NTU students and the university’s achievements in science and technology which have been a big part of Singapore’s progress as a nation.

And what’s a party without stardust and bling-bling? After sundown, popular 98.7FM radio personalities Gerald Koh and Joakim Gomez will take to the stage to regale the crowd with their wit and wacky humour as the hosts of the evening concert. Watch out for local heartthrob Elvin Ng, Best Actress and Star Awards Favourite Male Character Zhang Zhen Huan, stars of the upcoming drama, Sealed with a Kiss. Shane Pow, former Singapore Idol Nat Ho and Jeff rey Xu will also make up the star-studded lineup from . The high-octane evening concert will peak with a live mini concert by six-member K-pop group Dal Shabet, who will perform their latest releases like Joker and classic hits such as Mr Bang Bang. No mere eye candy, these girls are known for their energetic and entertaining dance routines. The registration fee for the fun run is $15 and includes a complimentary race pack. For more information about NTU Fest 2015 and to sign up for the fun run, visit www.event.ntu.edu.sg/ntufest2015/Pages/Home.aspx

Th ey seem to be completely in sync, fi nishing each other’s sentences and simultaneously breaking into the song Say something when asked to “say something” to test the microphone. What was your fi rst impression of him? A: Th e fi rst time I met Bala, he was late for football camp. He climbed the locked gates in the middle of the night and got chided by our coach. B: Andrew was a heft y defender who wasn’t too good at defending. He has improved in that aspect, but off the fi eld, he’s still the same – jovial, outgoing and oh-so-smooth with the ladies. He was loud and boisterous when hanging out with his “ah beng” friends, but an absolute angel around his girlfriends. And what do you think of him now? A: We’ve been through a lot together, be it overseas trips, breakups, wins and defeats in our sports. I confi de in him and seek encouragement from him. He also brings me back down to earth when I get too cocky. B: He’s my brother from another mother. He’s been there for me through all the rough times, and he knows exactly what to say to cheer me up. He puts up with my nonsense and I know he’s got my back.

B: Andrew loves playing computer games. I’d wake up in the middle of the night to voices saying things like: “Your top tower is under attack!” He also has a strange waking up ritual. It’s like watching a scene from National Geographic Channel. He scratches his body like an ape, snorts like a boar and rises from his bed like a hippopotamus emerging from a mud pool. A: Bala loves wearing my shoes. I think he likes being in my shoes. And if he doesn’t shave, he looks like a caveman. B: Well, if he doesn’t style his hair, he looks like La Bi Xiao Xin. What do you fi ght over? A: We’ve had disagreements over who is supposed to clean the fridge. When we fi rst got it, we made a deal where I’d pay for it and he would clean it. One day, I came back to the room and Bala had left a note, which said: “Andrew, please clean the fridge.” Th e note is still there today. B: I don’t know why Andrew likes to leave the fridge door open. I can’t count the number of times I’ve come back to fi nd the fl oor wet from the melted ice. What’s one nice thing he’s done for you? B: A few years back, I had knee surgery and had to be on crutches for a while. Andrew came to my house to pick me up and take me back to our hall. A: Last year, when I broke my fi nger, Bala drove me to the hospital and waited with me until the doctors fi xed it. Hey 23_FA_TP.indd 29 15/7/15 9:26 am Unplugged Congrats! What are your plans now that you have graduated? Jeremiah: I’m working at Acceltus, my internship company, as a web developer. My work involves designing and developing websites and intranet portals. Lisa: I’ll start my career as an accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers in August. In the meantime, I’ve been travelling and catching up with friends and family.

Both of you secured jobs at your internship companies, so you must have impressed your supervisors… Jeremiah: My eight-month stint at Acceltus was an eye-opener. I worked on two big projects that gave me insights into soft ware development and how to use web development tools. I got on well with my colleagues, using Instant Messenger to communicate with them. I also taught them basic sign language. Lisa: I interned at PricewaterhouseCoopers. I llearnt so much there and my ccolleagues readily shared their kknowledge with me. So when tthe job off er came, I accepted it..

Hey 23_FA_TP.indd 31 15/7/15 9:31 am Feature Winners take it all NTU students have been highly successful in winning national and global competitions from branding to engineering solutions. Derek Rodriguez picks their brains to fi nd out their winning factors

Like peas in a pod “Work with people you gel with and get to know their working styles so that you can best decide how to manage the project,” saysys Renaissance Engineering Programme student Tan Su Wen. She and Iris Tiong came in fi rst in Schneider Electric’s Singapore Go Green in the City 2015 competition for devising an integrated electricity management system. “Every member’s contribution is Twins Karyn and Kelly Ho, along with Kenny Toh, agree. vital. Be tech-savvy When you can’t meet in person, virtual meetings using the latest technological tools can quicken things. “Only go ahead Iris says: “We did our brainstorming via Google Docs and with an idea used online conference platforms like join.me for pitch rehearsals. you believe in. Simplify technical details with visual aids and analogies. We made a video and computer-aided designs to illustrate our energy-saving product,” says Su Wen. “It isn’t necessary to have a deluge of information. Keep it short, sharp and focused,” says marketing undergraduate Elaine Lim, who was in the NTU team that won the Deloitte Singapore Risk Intelligence Challenge Trophy. “Being a good team member Th eir foresight and debating skills when arguing the case is important as you’d never for Singapore to participate in a unifi ed trading block and a win it by yourself.” single currency for Southeast Asian nations won over the judges – Niramansakul Salisa in the fi nal round. Hey 23_FA_TP.indd 32 15/7/15 9:38 am “Mentors are everywhere – they may be your friends, your professors or your family. By being open to advice, guidance and feedback, you can make your ideas even better.” – Alex Chen (second from left) with May Lim and Nitya Anthony

Do your homework “Nothing kills confi dence like a half-baked idea,” says Martin Yong. Th e fi nal-year Materials Science & Engineering student topped Unilever’s Sustainable Living Challenge 2015 with his concept of an economical vending machine that dispenses shampoo and body wash. “Work out whether your idea is feasible and improve on its weaknesses bit by bit.” Adds accountancy student Lee Wei Rong, part of the Deloitte “We had the same vision, knew what we were working towards team: “Make your stand convincing by backing it up with statistics and were able to work out the small details easily.” – Tan Su Wen (centre) with Iris Tiong and real examples. Remember to do extensive research so you know the case inside out, which will also help you tackle questions from the judges.”

Believe in your idea “Judges look for creativity. Don’t present things that are obvious and repeated,” advises mathematics and economics student Niramansakul Salisa. Her team triumphed at the Bain & Company Case Challenge, an annual business case competition for undergraduates, with their proposal to help a food company turn around their sales in . “Believe in your idea. Th is keeps you going when you have to put in very long hours,” say Renaissance Engineering Programme students May Lim, Nitya Anthony and Alex Chen, who beat more than 1,000 teams from 55 countries to win the Shell Ideas360 competition. Th eir winning entry, an app that prevents food wastage, was declared a potential game-changer by an international panel of experts.

Practise, practise, practise “Your presentation should not appear as distinct segments presented by diff erent individuals, but as one cohesive proposal. And by being alert to the judges’ reactions even when not presenting, you might be able to anticipate the areas they are interested in or their likely questions,” advises Kelly, who received the Best Presenter Award at the L’Oréal Brandstorm national fi nals. What clinched it for her, she believes, was her calmness, poise and confi dent delivery when responding to the judges’ questions.

Keep on trying Captain of the Deloitte team Ong Wei Chang, who is working towards a double degree in Business and Accountancy, says: “Taking “W“We ttackled kl d real-life l lif problems bl in i this thi part in more competitions is defi nitely benefi cial.
