Mr. Gilman had made the history of the Gilman Family a matter of much study and expensive research, and to his pains the family owes a debt which can oerhaps never be repaid. Through the kind offices of Mr. James Feltham, who was long associated with Mr. Gilman. views in Hingham have been obtained and those which are not presented in this sketch are to appear in the completed work.

The Gillmans of Ireland are stated in an old family tra- } dition to be descended from a Christian knight of that name who, in ( during the crusades was engaged single combat with a Saracen, whose ri<;ht leg he cut off with a sabre cut. This capture is cum- I memorated in the coat of arms; and the crest, a griffin's head with a bear's paw in its mouth, being emblematic of strength, together • with the motto. 2iot. Inj icon/, but bi/ ile/'d." tend to condrm the legend. The drst who settled in Ireland, were two officers in king William's anny, 1690, one of whom survived, and received a grant I 1 of land.
