4 Nagambie HealthCare Annual Report 2012 CEO & Board Presidents Report 2012

Directly or indirectly, everything we do at Nagambie HealthCare continues to be focussed on our main goal: this is to ensure we provide the highest quality compassionate health care to our aged care residents, patients and home-care clients. To achieve this our passion is to innovate and make a meaningful, positive difference to people, their families, carers and local communities and to assist them to live with dignity, respect and where possible, with independence. Once again, this has been a busy and productive year for Nagambie HealthCare where for the fifth successive year we have achieved a financial surplus. The new financial year commenced with a new strategic planning process helped by a well-credentialed external facilitator. This gave the Board and Executive an opportunity to review our progress and consider the actions we need to take during the next five years to ensure a sustainable future. One of the key outcomes has been to develop further and strengthen our strategic partnerships with other healthcare providers. This recognises that we are currently a small organisation without critical mass. Therefore appropriate partnerships are required to deliver improved reach in services and to share resources in infrastructure, Information Communication Technology, teaching and marketing. In this respect we were very pleased to develop a joint proposal with Goulburn Valley (GV Health) for the Department of Health and the Minister’s Office in March which allows Nagambie HealthCare to care for more ‘sub-acute’ patients. There is now the opportunity for these patients who currently receive excellent care at GV Health during their ‘acute’ episodes, to transfer back to their local health facility for rehabilitation services. This will also be a great move forward in our relationship with GV Health and we look forward to a successful outcome. It is also highly beneficial that Nagambie HealthCare’s acute hospital beds, which have been significantly under- utilised during the last six years, will now be able to be modified for rehabilitation services under this new plan. We also applied for three new high care beds under the Aged Care Approvals Round (ACAR) and were successful in gaining the required government funding. The three new resident rooms were re-modelled and built over ten weeks and were opened last May. We would like to thank Sam Verrocchi for his skills and time in overseeing this important project. These rooms have set the standard for our ongoing renovations of resident rooms and the residents who moved into these rooms are very happy with them. At the same time we upgraded the high care sitting and dining room making it a much more comfortable area for our residents. Changes in government policy result in there now being a greater focus on home based care, especially for the elderly. We have made an exciting move forward in this area with our success in gaining five Community Aged Care Packages (CACPs) in a consortium with Violet Town Bush Nursing Centre, Euroa Health and the Strathbogie Shire. Seven more packages have since been transferred from Shepparton to the Consortium. Being a member of the Strathbogie Health and Community Services Consortium gives us many more opportunities to determine gaps in health service provision across the Shire and apply for funding streams to close those gaps. High quality healthcare outcomes depend on the quality and commitment of our staff. We are proud of our performance orientated culture and educational opportunities that have been developed to ensure continued high standards. These include two Patient Care Assistants gaining their Diploma of Nursing and our Nurse Unit Manager, Claire Sampson, undertaking the Clinical Leadership in Quality and Safety (CLiQS) program, auspiced by the Victoria Quality Council. Nurse Unit Manager, Katrina McMaster, is currently undertaking a Diploma in Community Services coordination. We run a robust education program throughout the year including a ‘cluster’ day program for all staff incorporating mandatory training which includes guest

speakers who provide specialist tuition relevant to our work. Development opportunities have also been extended through to Board members who attended a comprehensive governance training program. Our successful overseas staff recruitment program for Registered Nurses continues and we are soon to welcome a Registered Nurse who did her initial training in India prior to completing further qualifications in Ballarat. Our highly experienced Enrolled Nurse Team Leaders continue to play an important role in our clinical leadership team. Changes have been made to our visiting medical practitioners and we would like to welcome Dr Vikas Deshwal and Dr Gary Berryman to Nagambie HealthCare. Dr Berryman is employed by Goulburn Valley Health with whom we now have an agreement for the provision of medical services to our residents and patients. Nagambie HealthCare continues to provide new healthcare services to the community of Nagambie and surrounding catchment areas. These now include medical, 24 hour nursing, care planning, podiatry, optometry, complementary therapies and physiotherapy services. During the past year we have been pleased to be successful in a funding application with Active Ageing Network to purchase gym equipment. Our physiotherapist, Brent Davies, is now running a ‘Small Weights Program for the over 50s’ which complements his pilates program. Success in new funding applications continued with an infrastructure grant of $120,000 for replacement of flooring in the hostel, three new hot water systems, a new boiler and a fully addressable fire system. We would like to thank the Department of Health for this generous support. An enormous achievement was to gain both Aged Care Accreditation in March and ISO 9001:2008 accreditation (for our hospital sub-acute beds) in August. This means that we remain fully accredited until 2015 in both our aged care facility and in our hospital. We would like to thank each and every staff member for their commitment to making this possible. With regret, we farewell a long standing member of the Board, Dr Graeme Ratten and his wife Bev, a member of the Nagambie HealthCare Ladies Auxiliary and a singer with the Nagambie Larks. Graeme has been a highly regarded and active contributor to the Board between 2000 and 2012 and was President from 2002 to 2007. During his tenure as President he led the re-opening of Nagambie Hospital - a major achievement. Graeme and Bev have moved away from Nagambie and take with them our gratitude for their significant contribution to Nagambie HealthCare. Graeme has been awarded a Life Governorship. We also said farewell with thanks to Ms Kim Douglass from the Board and welcomed a new Board member, Ms Jacquie Anton. Jacquie comes to us with a long standing background in healthcare and business and we look forward to her contribution. We would like to extend our thanks to the members of the Ladies Auxiliary who continue with their sterling fund raising efforts, the outcome of which adds significantly to the improved comfort of our patients and residents. Finally, we would like to acknowledge and thank the local community in Nagambie and surrounding catchment area for its continuing support. Clearly, without this support we cannot continue to achieve our aim to provide a superior, more personalised, non-institutionalised patient/resident/home-care experience that does not compromise clinical governance (i.e. quality, safety and risk management.) With community support Nagambie Healthcare will continue to differentiate its brand and attract both highly professional clinical staff and the people who require our health care services. 8 Nagambie HealthCare Annual Report 2012 Ladies Auxilary

Presidents Report 2012

With the passing of 2011 the Auxiliary of Nagambie HealthCare completed 82 years of service to the community of the hospital and more recently the Aged Care Hostel.

Meeting numbers have not been great, an average attendance being 11 and apologies 9 for the year, but a much greater number of people have been ever ready to contribute with time and whatever may have been needed when our special fundraising events were on.

At the last AGM the CEO gave the Auxiliary a ‘Wish List’ to consider. From this we were able to purchase a number of items to help the residents’ comfort - 8 digital TVs ($500 each); an updated stereo system in highcare ($250); a frypan used for cooking sessions ($100); repairs to the hostel curtains which added greatly to the general appear- ance ($990).

We again had a luncheon/card day, this year at the Senior Citizens Hall. This proved both socially and financially successful - our profit was $1,200. In October the Sporting Clubs Hospital Charity Day and BBQ returned a profit of $1,430. The Christmas Drinks function held at ‘Wood Nook’ was once again a great success - the profit being $4,142.27.

The Nagambie Lions Club once again proved to be generous supporters of the Hospital Auxiliary with a donation of $1,000. The Catholic Guild gave $100, as did the exercise group.

We continue to provide a weekly trolley service at the hospital which is much appreciated by residents.

Our Treasurer Bev is retiring from office so our thanks are due to her for a job well done. And you may care to pon- der on what percentage of 82 years Nola has been Secretary of the Auxiliary! Nola has everything at her fingertips and we are all very much in her debt - many thanks Nola.

My thanks also to all of you for your contributions. There is always someone who will fall in when needed - thank you one and all.

Helen Kennedy President

Nagambie HealthCare Annual Report 2012 13 Activities and Lifestyle

The Activities and Lifestyle program run at Nagambie HealthCare by Belinda, Clare and Christine and wonderfully supported by our volunteers, Moz, Sandra, Lynn, Sue, Edna and Leny, is very important for the quality of life of our residents and we always have a fun and vibrant program.

The highlights of the Activities program during 2011/12 included:

• Meeting Keith Potger – one of the founding members of – at Broadford Seniors Week. Our residents enjoyed his concert and, like all good fans, queued for autographs afterwards!

• Touching the Melbourne Cup at Mitchelton Winery where we also met Sub Zero who won the Melbourne Cup in 1992. Amanda Elliott and Rob Skelton were our hosts and arrived in a helicopter which thrilled everyone. Amanda and Rob then brought ‘The Cup’ to Nagambie HealthCare for those unable to go out to the winery. The excitement was palpable – where’s a ‘bookie’ when you need one?

• Melbourne Cup Day, Christmas and New Years Eve all brought great celebrations and ‘dress up’ parties.

• Grace Kelly – Style Icon – Exhibition was a sell out at Nagambie HealthCare and the bus was full. Our residents regaled the staff and each other with stories of Grace’s beautiful gowns - and their own!

• Fundraising for Cancer Research – our residents held a morning tea on Daffodil Day (ably assisted by the hotel services team!) for their friends and family and raised over $400 towards cancer research.

• Queen’s Jubilee High Tea – fifty years on the throne and memories of the Coronation came thick and fast.

• The ‘100+ Club’. Like the Queen & Grace Kelly, we have our own icons – those residents who have reached 100 and more. We had one 100th birthday and two 103rd birthdays! The parties and celebrations were suitably ‘golden’
