“Jacob said to his father, ‘I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you have told me; now sit up and eat of my game, so that you may bless me’” (Genesis 27:19).

What a lie! This particular chapter of the bible is one of the episodes that has strong suspense throughout. It evokes much sentiment. The deception is so deep. Esau’s hurt will run deeper. The role of Rebecca so troubling. The pounding of the heart of Jacob at this moment can be felt even by the reader today. What would have happened had Isaac told Jacob to go and call his brother? Jacob used the name of another man and obtained a blessing that became so effective in his own life. Does that not ring a note about name and the bearer? Well, the only way one can peacefully digest the events of this chapter is with hindsight on what God said about them from the moment of their birth. God’s choice always stands. May we become his favourites, and may our mothers be included in our favour.

Happy Sunday! Special Prayers Please pray for all those who have died recently, especially Dorothy Hughes, as well as those whose anniversaries fall at this time. Please pray for healing for those who are sick and strength for those who continue to reach out, despite risk, in service of others, particularly those involved in the management of the Covid-19 pandemic. This week, Father Louis will be saying Masses for the following special intentions: the late Theophilus Okoroji's family, Mr Peter Oluigbo, Mr Lucky, Ekene Uba, Mrs Callista Ononanwa, Celine Fehily (RIP) and Mazi Nnamdi Kalu To request prayers, please contact Fr Louis or leave your request through his letter box.

Do read the Canon’s reflection, available on the parish website, whatsapp and Facebook page, as well as on the cathedral webpage. It explores the wake up call Deuteronomy gave to a People who had lost their way. Obedience to the Law of God was the only hope, the only Way. Through Christ’s humanity we have a new way and are commissioned, with His disciples to reach out in ministry and share the vision. The Canon shares an old rabbinic prayer inviting us to delight in the Trinity: When I wander – You! When I ponder – You! Only You, You again, always You! When I am gladdened - You! When I am saddened – You! Sky is you! Earth is You! You above! You below! Every trend, at every end! Only you; You again, always You! You! You! You!

MARIAN MATTERS: This Sunday, at noon, begins the one-hour Dunkeld leg of the Rosary Rally, promoted by the Pope and held across the Dioceses of , Wales and England.

Uniting around their Bishop, people and priests are invited to join in intercession for the Rosary Mission intentions and for the needs of their particular Diocese. In a year which has seen the Bishop appeal for funds, making the bold decision to recentre diocesan activities around the fine resources of St Mary Forebank, as the hard necessity of selling Lawside bites, the diocese needs our prayers, as well as any financial contributions we find ourselves able to make. The forced Pandemic closure of churches has impacted finances heavily, even though our clergy have, unstintingly, continued to serve us and the Church. Joining the Rosary Rally is a way to support the diocesan needs.

The intentions are: 1. Protecting our families and the family of nations, especially in this Year of St Joseph. 2. A deepening of faith, hope and love and the protection of life. 3. Peace in the world. 4. Deliverance from Coronavirus; for those working for a cure; for those who have died; for those who are suffering and those who care for them.

The Angelus: is one of the most beautiful prayers of the Church as it brings our hearts and minds close to Christ our Saviour and His beloved mother, Mary. Please join us on four Thursdays in June - 3rd,10th,17th and 24th, in St Fillan's Church, in Newport when we will pray the Angelus after 10am mass. Small prayer cards will be available.

Monday 31st May Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

MARY’S MAGNIFICAT In Luke 1:39-56 we learn of Mary’s visit to her cousin, Elizabeth. She was filled with the Holy Spirit as the babe in Elizabeth’s womb leapt for joy, proclaiming words familiar from our Hail Mary: “Of all women you are the most blessed and blessed is the fruit of your womb…Blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by The Lord would be fulfilled.”

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit exults in God my saviour; because He has looked upon His lowly handmaid.

Yes, from this day forward all generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has done great things for me.

Holy His name, and His mercy reaches from age to age for those who fear Him.

He has shown the power of His arm, He has routed the proud of heart. He has pulled down princes from their thrones and exalted the lowly. The hungry He has filled with good things, the rich sent empty away.

He has come to the help of Israel His servant, mindful of His mercy -according to the promise he made to our ancestors – of his mercy to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.

St Catherine of Sienna: ‘Eternal Trinity, Godhead, mystery deep as the sea, you could give me no greater gift than the gift of yourself. Yes, you are a fire that takes away coldness, illuminates the mind with its light and causes me to know your truth.’
