November 2019 Dear Conference Attendees: On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, we are thrilled to host the 2019 Illinois State Music Teacher’s Association’s (ISMTA) conference and welcome you to our campus. We hope that the facilities at Eastern Illinois University and the Doudna Fine Arts building provides a wonderful environment for this year’s conference, and you are invited back at any time to our beautiful campus and to experience music at EIU first hand. So many of the fine students studying here at EIU are, in fact, your students. You serve as the front line, and are often the first music teacher for so many students. Your creativity and teaching skills inspire students, and your encouragement helps students to see a future for themselves in music. We are thankful for your hard work, dedication, and inspiration to future generations of music students! Sincerely, Shellie Gregorich Chair, Eastern Illinois University, Department of Music

7 2019 Session Descriptions

(25-minute session) 2:30 – 2:55pm Peak Experience: A Triptychal Approach to Transformative Rehearsals Dr. Cory Ganschow Lecture Hall Research delineates that experiences found to be euphoric, ecstatic, and deeply valued are the experi- ences that transform humans. Conductors and educators are undoubtedly tenacious in the pursuit of these experiences, although the moments are generally rare. This interactive session focuses on the three conditions that must be met in order for a peak experience to occur and how these conditions can be broken down into manageable rehearsal techniques.

(25-minute session) 2:30 – 2:55pm Compositions and Life of Clara Wieck vs. Clara Schumann Dr. Junghwa Lee Recital Hall 2019 marks the 200th anniversary of Clara Schumann’s birth, a pioneer international concert pianist, a woman composer, and the organizer of her own concert tours. Through the musical education by her father, Clara learned to compose, and produced some works since childhood to middle age. Among the piano works that she composed, the styles and characters in her youth and later notably differ from each other: the former with more bravura with exuberant technicality vs. the latter more subtle and ‘serious’ character. This presentation will introduce these aspects and feature Clara Schumann’s notable compositions including Opp. 15, 20, 21, etc.

(25-minute session) 2:50 – 3:25pm Nurturing the Desire to Learn Dr. Christina Tio Lecture Hall The best gift teachers can give their students is the desire to learn, which can be nurtured first, by cultivating a strong relationship between the teacher, parent and student. Strong relationships promote trust and willingness in the students to be guided in their learning - to explore, discover and practice deep listening skills. Real listening develops musical sensibilities, and motivates a lifelong pursuit of music. The desire to learn also breeds confidence, competence and other character traits that last a lifetime. This presentation will include strategies, excerpts of teaching videos demonstrating teacher- parent-student partnership in , as well as testimonials.

(25-minute session) 2:50 – 3:25pm Forgotten Masterworks: Carl Czerny’s 4-Handed Piano Fantasies on Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley Novels Drs. Samuel Gingher & Pei-I Wang Recital Hall While Carl Czerny is known today as an important pedagogue who created countless etudes, his oeuvre as a composer is largely forgotten. With 861 opus numbers and works written in virtually every genre, many significant compositions await rediscovery. Czerny’s 4-hand Romantic piano fantasies, Op. 240- 243, based on Sir Walter Scott’s famous Waverley Novels, highlight the stunning variety, originality and improvisatory nature of the 19th century Fantasy, featuring rich harmonic modulation, virtuosity and ingenious thematic development. Join us for an analysis of the elusive Fantasy form, a discussion on performance practice and improvisation, and a performance of unknown 19th century masterworks.

8 2019 Session Descriptions

(Session 1) 3:30 – 4:20pm Incorporating Assessment into University-Level Group Piano Classes to Enhance Student Learning Dr. JeongSoo Kim Lecture Hall Assessment in applied music classes is widely considered challenging because of the subjective na- ture of music. However, many studies have demonstrated that formative assessment tools such as checklists, rating scales, and rubrics can enhance the learning process. This presentation will include a brief overview of different types of assessments and assessment techniques that can be useful for university-level group piano classes. It will focus on criteria-specific rubrics and their positive impact on students’ learning. The presentation will demonstrate how the rubrics can provide students with ongoing feedback and how each student’s practice can become progressively more efficient.

(Session 1) 3:30 – 4:20pm Piano à la Quartette©: How to Forge a Fabulous Foursome Emi Murata & Bette Coulson Recital Hall Come discover what makes 2 piano, 8 hands ensemble playing so fun and unique! Live performances by Piano à la Quartette© of select works and a graded list of pieces and publishers will be provided.

(Session 2) 4:30 – 5:20pm Music Moves Us . . . Literally! — Using Movement to Enhance Musicianship Clinton Pratt & Kristen Regester Doudna 1550 - Band Room Do your students struggle with rhythm, pulse, meter, phrasing, dynamics, expression, theory, improvi- sation, or aural skills? Not anymore! Learn how to awaken and refine the inner musician in all your stu- dents by using the whole body. This is much more involved than just tapping beats. Participate in this active and engaging session where you will learn by doing, and then take the ideas back to help your students. Activities range from beginner to advanced, can be customized for private or group teaching, and are suitable for young and old. Come and challenge yourself!

(Session 2) 4:30 – 5:20pm Website Perfect Pitch: Fine Tune Your Music Studio Website to Generate Extra Income Sarah Eastman Lecture Hall Did you know you can make extra money through your music studio website? It’s easy! During this ses- sion you will learn three credible and proven methods for turning your current website into an income- generating site. You are encouraged – but not required – to bring your laptop or tablet for a hands-on learning experience. This how-to information is easily transferable so you can use it on your own after the conference.

9 2019 Session Descriptions

(Session 3) 8:30 – 9:20am Music, The Brain, and Autism Marge Lucas Lecture Hall In this presentation, you will learn how the brain how music improves brain functions resulting in improved cognitive functions, motor skills, and expressive language through music via the piano. Ms. Lucas explains how to teach piano to the child with an atypical, and typical brain structure. In addition she will also explain how music with dissonance creates a negative effect on the brain. This presenta- tion gives some indicators of a student with a developmental disorder such as autism and how to cor- rect those tendencies, as well as how to deal with the negative behavioral traits.

(Session 3) 8:30 – 9:20am Rubato: what, where, why, when, and how Dr. Jeff Kleinsorge Recital Hall Dr. Kleinsorge will present examples of a fully-developed rubato, and then he’ll break down its peda- gogy: from elementary seeds of rhythmic understanding, to intermediate tempo-bending experiments, to advanced, pre-college artistic expression. He’ll examine not just how to use rubato, but why and where - and he’ll show you how to include the student in the creative, decision-making process. Buckle up, because there’s going to be a little bit of theory – but get this: he’s going to take that hard and dry AIM theory and show you how to bring it to life as an intuitive act of musical expression.

(Session 4) 2:30 – 3:20pm Mindfully Musical Aubrey Faith-Slaker Lecture Hall Mindfully Musical: How music teachers can use the setting of the weekly music lesson to help cure our students’ modern-day anxieties, distractions, and other first-world maladies. An overview of the research, ideas to keep in mind, and a practical approach with demonstration that teachers can apply in their own lessons.

(Session 4) 2:30 – 3:20pm Beyond 10,000 Hours: Teaching Effective Practice Habits Dr. Paul Kenyon Recital Hall What do we want music students to accomplish between lessons? The good news is that practicing works! Especially if we teach good practice habits that are deliberate, mindful and targeted toward specific objectives. This presentation will summarize some practical conclusions drawn from recent cognitive research about music learning. The bulk of the session will provide practical applications for developing deliberate practice habits that yield efficient and effective music learning. By teaching students to practice in ways that foster clearer and more detailed mental representations, we can help students to develop deeper musical understanding and greater technical security.

10 2019 Session Descriptions

(Session 5) 3:30 – 4:20pm Preparing Your Students for Music School Auditions Dr. Lynnsey Lambrecht Lecture Hall As the competitiveness for college music programs and fine arts scholarships continues to grow more intense, high school instructors remain a element in helping their students find the right fit. This translates to guiding the student to find not only a program well-suited for their individual personality and skills, but also one that offers worthy scholarship awards. However, with the constant changes in higher education, it can be hard to successfully navigate collegiate expectations both for interested students and the instructors assisting them. This session will provide explicit ideas to consider when thinking about applying to college music programs.

(Session 5) 3:30 – 4:20pm Introducing Jazz to Students Paul Johnston Recital Hall This presentation will discuss effective ways to introduce students to jazz. We will cover several im- portant jazz pianists who have an approach that often resonates with young musicians. We will also discuss strategies to help students learn chords and voice chords in an authentic way. The presentation will also include a review of resources helpful to teachers who have students interested in jazz.

(Session 6) 4:30 – 5:20pm How much could you students improve their Sight Reading in 7 weeks? Mary Faith Williams Lecture Hall How does one become a great sight reader? Piano teachers often wrestle with this question. Mary Faith Williams, the director of the piano department at a large music school in Southeastern Wisconsin, explored this question as the capstone research project for her Master’s degree. Over seven weeks she collected data from 44 students. The findings were fascinating and transformative for her piano stu- dio. The findings she has presented at pedagogy seminars, including the 2017 National Conference on Keyboard, have enlightened and inspired teachers. This engaging and interactive session will be transformative for all piano studios!

(Session 6) 4:30 – 5:20pm J. S. Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” as Comprehensive “Keyboard Practice” Dr. John Orfe Recital Hall Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Goldberg Variations” are an encyclopedia of invention, affect, contrapuntal ingenuity, and keyboard technique. Rarely, however, are they introduced at the intermediate or early advanced levels of piano instruction. Dr. Orfe will advocate the benefits of giving students at different levels carefully chosen selections of individual variations that offer much pedagogically in handling melodic line, proportion, harmony, and texture. 11 Ralph Votapek Piano Masterclass November 2, Saturday at 10:00am Recital Hall, Doudna Performing Arts Center
