Bringing forth life

In October 2010, Linda Johnston MD presented the Malvaceae plant family with its key remedy Chocolate. Her talk was filled with compassion, wit and wisdom, and gave a fascinating insight into the unique place chocolate has in our society. It also sparked in me the idea for a prescribing indication for chocolate as a homeopathic medicine. Chocolate is made from the seeds of the Theobroma cacao tree, the only plant/seeds on the planet to contain Anandamide, a natural pleasure inducing neurotransmitter which gives a feeling of bliss. Anandamide receptors are present in the brain, uterus, fallopian tubes and embryo. Anandamide synchro nises the preparation of the uterine lining with embryo development and fallopian tube contractions. It has a key role in enabling implantation of the embryo. The levels are highest just before implantation and drop soon after. If there is no embryo to implant then the Anadamide level stays high and a craving for chocolate often develops in the woman in the week preceding menses. The tree Theobroma cacao never lets go of its fruit – never. My idea was that an infertile woman with a history of having had an apparently healthy in vitro fertilisation (IVF) embryo which failed to implant might benefit from chocolate as a homeopathic medicine.
