2012 Species of Concern List

Bonnie Heidel Wyoming Natural Diversity Database, University of Wyoming www.uwyo.edu/wyndd/ April 7, 2012 The 2012 Wyoming Plant Species of Concern list contains the 434 species/varieties considered to be of greatest conservation concern in the state. All changes since the 2007 list are bold-faced. It is accompanied by the Species of Potential Concern list, containing those species of limited distribution that could become vulnerable in the future and species recognized as sensitive by federal agencies that are no longer tracked. There are also lists compiled of species added since 2007, species deleted since 2007, and species of undetermined status. The 2012 list and related lists reflect new efforts to standardize state ranks in rule-based calculations informed by peer reviews. The methods and background are presented at the end of the list. Codes and definitions are posted on-line. The lists follow most taxonomic treatments in Dorn (2001). Species Scientific Heritage Rank Federal Status County Managed Area Range Context # Occurs. The 2012 Wyoming Plant Species of Concern list was prepared by Wyoming Natural Diversity Database (WYNDD) in a process that updated and analyzed current information on: Number of extant occurrences Range extent Intrinsic species’ vulnerability

28 2012 Wyoming Plant Species of Concern List

A rank calculator tool developed through NatureServe (Master et al. 2009, Faber-Langendoen et al. 2009) was used, scoring the factors above that are most consistent between all rare Wyoming plant species. An expanded description of the process is available on request. In the future, rigorous evaluation of threats will replace the intrinsic vulnerability factor, and other factors like abundance and trends will be incorporated. List placement is based on a combination of state rank and Wyoming contribution rank that can be viewed as a conservation concern matrix for determining which species remain on the species of concern list (SOC), potential species of concern list (PSOC), or are no longer tracked.

Conservation concern matrix for Wyoming WY Contrib Rank\ State Rank S1 S2 S3 Very High SOC SOC SOPC LISTS

High SOC SOC SOPC Species of Concern (SOC)

Medium SOC SOC - Species of Potential Concern (SOPC)

Low SOC - - Not Tracked/Other Agency Lists

The plant species on this list are not addressed by any state legislation but are routinely cited in policies and in development of sensitive species lists by federal land-managing agencies. Federal sensitive species list criteria are usually narrower and more geographically restricted than criteria for the Wyoming species of concern list. The first Wyoming plant species of concern list was prepared in 1982, based in large part on the information compiled in Dorn (1977). Since that time, over 700 vascular plant species are or have been tracked as species of concern in Wyoming, reflecting discoveries in the state as represented by floristic surveys of the Rocky Mountain Herbarium, species-specific surveys, taxonomic research, and other changes reflected in revisions to the state flora (Dorn 1988, 1992, 2001) and in updates to the species of concern lists by Robert Lichvar, Hollis Marriott, Walter Fertig and Bonnie Heidel. The 700 species represent 25% of the current state flora, and most of the species that are no longer tracked were found to be more common than previously known. In turn, the continual compilation and periodic updating has funneled attention on the de facto rarest species.
