Lady Joanne and Calvin Borel drive toward the wire, just in front of Lear’s Princess and Octave in Saturday’s Alabama.

He never stopped riding her. She never got up in there,” Nafzger said. “If we come down, it doesn’t matter, we’ll get them in the Breeders’ Cup. But I’m greedy, I want my second Alabama.” He got it – nine years after winning it with Banshee Breeze. “I loved where she was the whole race, but then I was worried at the head of the lane because when you get to the lead, it’s how much can you hold? Lear’s Princess was making a good run and Octave was right there,” Nafzger said. “She’s a good filly, she’s already proven that she’s a good filly, how good a filly, we’ll find out. That’s what rac- ing is all about, that’s the fun part. You never win a horse race until they take your picture and give you the money. There aren’t any cinches.” Especially when you climb to the highest rung. Lady Joanne and Octave have split their two meetings, while Lear’s Princess has run a half-length short of Octave and a neck to Lady Joanne. And, amazingly, the division standings still read then Lady Joanne/Octave then Lear’s Prin- cess. That’s why Nafzger was thinking about Lady Joanne’s progression, where it might take her by fall. “She knew she had to run the race of her life today, and she did,” Nafzger Dave Harmon said. “How good do I feel? Worth Repeating, Mack Miller Style During a short telephone conversation with Hall of Fame trainer Mack Miller Friday, The Special’s Joe Clancy gleaned the following about Saratoga: “I loved to see people that I only saw that month every year. I loved the restaurants and I loved the horse sales. When August came around I was the happiest guy in the world.” Miller also recalled a special night at Fasig-Tipton where he bought a yearling for longtime employer Paul Mellon’s Rokeby Stable. “A good friend of mine was a vet from Tennessee who worked the sales and he’d come to my barn every morning and we’d talk horses and just catch up. Mr. Mellon didn’t buy many yearlings, but this year he had told me to see about buying a yearling colt for him. I told my friend and he said ‘I’ve got one you should look at.’ I paid $175,000 for him.” The yearling turned out to be Fit To Fight, who won the 1984 New York Handicap Triple of the Metropolitan Mile, Suburban and Brooklyn Handicaps. He earned more than $1 million and retired to become one of the original stallions at Lane’s End Farm. Tod Marks WALK THIS WAY. Patrick Biancone’s horses head to the track at Oklahoma. 8 Sunday, August 19, 2007 Yaddo – Continued from page 6 “Everything went wrong in her last race; she tried to buck Johnny off in the gate and she was just plain mad,” the trainer said. “Today she had running on her mind when they broke. Kent put her in a good spot. I just left it up to him how to ride.” Desormeaux positioned Latitude Forty a couple of lengths behind Factual Contender and Eibar Coa. Factual Contender, the second choice, carved out frac- tions of 24.08 seconds, 48.67 and 1:12.65. After a mile in 1:36.27, Latitude Forty loomed to the outside of Factual Contender and gained a narrow lead. The winner extended that advantage and flew home over the final eighth in a solid 11.57 seconds. The final time of 1:47.84 over the firm inner course represented the fastest running of the Yaddo since 1999. Four-year-old Latitude Forty returned $48 and won for the fourth time in 14 starts, with earnings of $197,172. Latitude Forty’s Yaddo win symbolizes some long- standing friendships Hertler has cultivated throughout his nearly 30 years as a trainer in New York. She is the 12th and final foal out of the pensioned mare Planchette, who is owned by Honnold and her partner, Paul Hoffman. Hertler trained many of Planchette’s babies, but Latitude Forty has been the best. She is the first stakes winner out of the dam and the first stakes winner for the owners/breeders, who race under Dee Zee Stable. The stable currently has three runners. Tod Marks Hoffman, a Manhattan-based insurance broker, Latitude Forty pulls away from the field in the stretch of Saturday’s Yaddo for New York-breds. campaigned stakes winners on his own in the past – including the Hertler-trained New York-bred Mugatea Edward Messina, was responsible for the mating of On the backstretch, occasional professional rival- who won the Forego here in 1984.
