2 www.afl vic.com.au JOHN BAIRD Baird reaches 200 game milestone One of the easiest decision Gary Ayres has had to make each year in his Port Melbourne coaching role is the re-appointment of John Baird as Port Melbourne captain. It has been a constant during the past six years of Ayres’ tenure at the Borough, a choice he describes as a “no- brainer.” It’s just another mark of recognition for Baird, who has captained Port Melbourne longer than anyone in the club’s strong and proud 128-year history, and who this weekend plays his 200th VFL game. When Luke Cotchett moved on from Port Melbourne in 2008 the captaincy was vacated. Ayres said that Baird was the obvious choice for many reasons, not just because he was the best player at the club. “John loves the responsibility and he’s held in such high regard by the playing group. He can have the job for life as far as I’m concerned,” Ayres said. Asked what has made Baird such a formidable fi xture in the competition, Ayres replied: “You’ve got to have talent, skill and class and John certainly has all those. “John is very good at preparing himself for his training workload as well as his match day workload. He’s very professional, has a great understanding of the game and the way he’s played for the past seven years has really inspired a lot of the guys. “The way the group looks at John for leadership and direction and calm and his experience on match day has just been an inspiration to the Port Melbourne Football FAST FACTS club. For some it would have been easy to walk, especially given that Coburg have not played fi nals since 2008 and have won a collective 31 games in the past six seasons. But, Carnell has resisted such enticements. For the 27-year-old leaving Coburg would be like deserting a family member at a time of need. “There have defi nitely been times when other clubs have approached me, but I’ve got some really good friends here, guys who are genuinely good mates,” Carnell said. “You can’t leave guys like that. There is that sense of family and really good mates and that’s purely the main reason. “The club has been really supportive of me and I didn’t really want to move on from Coburg. Being at the one club has been rewarding and I enjoy the environment and the people around the club. “You never want to leave a club in a worse position than when you arrived. “It’s a really good, genuine family club and now we have to push for sustained success and that’s the only way we’re going to develop the club. “I’ve made a lot of life long mates along the way. I think that’s the most important thing you can take out of footy along with premierships.” Carnell, this weekend plays his 150th game for Coburg, another signifi cant achievement to compliment his status as the club’s longest serving captain in its 89-year history. Now in his sixth season as captain, Carnell has moved past FAST FACTS club legends Mick Erwin (1969-73) and Brad Nimmo (1987- 1991) to be the longest serving captain. It’s a trek that’s taken him to two AFL clubs on different sides of the country as well as two VFL clubs on different sides of the West Gate Bridge. It has also seen him savour the joy of playing AFL as well as the bone-crunching realisation that the game can be just as much about character building as it can be rewarding. It’s been a journey where Faulks has always been on the cusp, right from the time Sydney selected him in the 2006 AFL National Draft. But as many other players have experienced, cracking into the Swans team bursting with talent and experience is not easy. It proved beyond his reach. After keeping the home side goalless in the fi rst term to establish a 36-point lead, Geelong then piled on eight goals in the second term to put the game beyond doubt at half time with an 11 goal lead. Michael Luxford had all three of his goals for the game by half time, with goal kicking duties then passed on to Lincoln McCarthy and Jordan Schroder who both helped themselves to four goals for the game.
