Careless Jewel was a little hard to handle even in her career opener. Breaking from the rail at Keeneland Apr. 4, she was a bit rank when in traffic on the back- stretch, then weakened after getting into the clear at the quarter pole and finished third. It was the last time she would be challenged. The Donver Stable colorbearer came back to break her maiden handily on the Woodbine Poly May 9, and added a 7 1/4-length score when trying two turns for the first time in an allowance test in Toronto June 21. Her connections opted to go on the road for her next start, and the move proved wise. Careless Jewel was let go at 10-1 in the July 18 GII Delaware Oaks, but she handled that field with ease, duplicating her winning margin in the allowance test in an eye-catching performance. She was even more impressive despite her antics yesterday. Reunited and It Feels So Good... Reunited with jockey Robert Landry after playing the bronc on the way to the gate, Careless Jewel broke sharply, but had her head cocked around to the right as her rider tried to harness her speed early. Be Fair (Ex- change Rate) went up to take the lead; Careless Jewel was on her heels and on the bit, and Landry had to check sharply as they raced into the first turn, guiding his mount to the outside. Things went more smoothly after that. Careless Jewel tracked Be Fair through frac- tions of :23.33, :47.35 and 1:12.14. Edging closer on the far turn, she was in command when they hit the lane and opened up with every stride to hit the line a Windfall for Windfields... much-the-best winner. AThere was a lot of jostling in The result of the Alabama was a timely catalogue there and I got really concerned--I thought she was update for Windfields Farm, which acquired the dam of going to get dropped into that first turn, and I think Careless Jewel at Keeneland November in 2006, and Robert did a great job with her,@ trainer Josie Carroll announced Friday that they would dis- said. • ARE SUPER TRAINERS GOOD OR BAD for the SPORT? by Chris Mcgrath Bill Finley Has Part II of His Two-Part Series on “Super Trainers” Dominating the Game of Racing
THURSDAY, JUNE 21, 2018 LETTER FROM ASCOT: HEROES AND GOATS ARE SUPER TRAINERS GOOD by Dave Johnson OR BAD FOR THE SPORT? When I heard the Ascot track announcer say, "Tony Curtis is heading to the stalls," it took me a while to put two and two together. "I thought Tony Curtis was dead," the guy next to me in the press box muttered. I was sure he was, too. But then I realized the announcer was talking about #16 in Wednesday's G2 Royal Hunt Cup Handicap. For those of you who always complain about short fields and favorites with ever blinking low odds, consider the fact that 32 were entered for this race today, and 30 ran. They needed three starting gates for the straight-on one-mile test. The favorite was 7-1. And it wasn't Tony Curtis (GB) (Rock of Click above to watch TDN video of trainers discussing the Gibraltar {Ire})--he finished nineteenth at 40-1. • Big Finish to Gold Cup Thriller Cont
FRIDAY, 23 JUNE, 2017 TIPPERARY ON TOP ON DAY TO REMEMBER BIG FINISH TO GOLD CUP By Emma Berry THRILLER As is the tradition at Royal Ascot, the post-race picnics have lasted long into the night this week and guests at Wednesday's traditional Irish gathering had plenty of reason to celebrate. For two small breeding partnerships in Tipperary, Tuesday's results were particularly special. The opening race, the G1 Queen Anne S., went to Ribchester (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), bred by Mike O'Brien and Andrew Thompson, and 35 minutes later it was the turn of their neighbour Jim Mulcahy, who bred G2 Coventry S. winner Rajasinghe (Ire) (Choisir {Aus}) in partnership with his son Geoff. "It's difficult to believe--it was really amazing," said Mulcahy senior, a veterinary surgeon from Kilshane. "We came to Ascot hoping that he might run into a place and he surpassed all our expectations. The congratulations we've had from every Tom, Dick and Harry--my phone has nearly blown up. We drank a few bottles of Pimm's and then we drank a few more after that.
