Introduction

The Royal Dutch Athletics Federation proudly presents its delegation for the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, . Eleven men and twelve women are entered for a total of 26 events, including two relays.

Not only is the delegation sizeable, there is considerable excitement in The Netherlands. Dutch Athletics has been growing stronger and stronger for a number of years, just in time for the European Championships on home soil next year, as well as the in Rio.

In the 14 previous editions of the IAAF World Championships, Dutch athletes have won ten medals. Two of them came two years ago, and both athletes who won them are back. After his Silver in , Ignisious Gaisah is back at . For this season, however, the versatile Dafne Schippers has switched her focus from (Bronze in 2013) to the Sprints. The 23-year old has of course made her mark in the international scene this year, for example by bringing the Dutch 100 meter record below 11 seconds (10,92), by winning European indoor gold over 60 meters, and by reaching the podium at prestigious meetings like , , , and .

Going into the Championships, Dutch athletics counts six athletes in the top-8 of the world rankings of their event. Two more are in the top-8 of the qualifying list (which includes 2014 performances). Highest ranked is Sifan Hassan, another young super talent. Starting competitive only four years ago, the 22-year old is already a reigning European champion, both in-, and outdoors. With her recent Dutch record of 3:56.05, Hassan is second in the world this year, and 16th all-time.

The Dutch are well represented in a number of events. In addition to Hassan, Maureen Koster’s 3:59.79 is in the top-8 of the 1500 meters. In Heptathlon, The Netherlands is even represented with a full complement of three athletes: World Indoor Champion Nadine Broersen (4th in the heptathlon world this year), Nadine Visser (7th), and Anouk Vetter (8th). Dutch also fields two athletes in the men’s (Eelco Sintnicolaas and Pieter Braun), as well as potentially in the women’s 1500 meters, 5000 meters (Koster and Susan Kuijken), and 10,000 meters (Kuijken and European U23 champion Jip Vastenburg).

More information about all Dutch participants in these championships can be found in this booklet, alongside statistical information, an interview with Sifan Hassan, and more.

The best of luck to all participants in this tournament, and to the organizers!

This booklet is dedicated to Ton de Kleijn. Among many things, our dear friend was one of the premier Atletiekunie statisticians, a dedicated club- and federation volunteer, and chief editor of these Championship Team Booklets for the past ten years. Ton suddenly passed away in March of 2015 - Rest in Peace, Nest(sn)or!

A word with … Sifan Hassan

As the reigning European champion both indoors and outdoors, Sifan Hassan is one of the main Dutch medal threats in Beijing. After a fabulous race at the Hercules meeting in Monaco, she is ranked second in the world with 3:56.05, improving her own Dutch record yet again.

Question: After your European indoor title, you picked up the outdoor season where you had left off, running well in many high-profile races. What was the purpose behind the competition choices, perhaps not only races aimed at fast times?

Sifan: I chose to run the 1500m competitions in the Diamond League events so I can win the Diamond League. In addition, I ran some 800m events to gain some speed. I need to run enough competitions to get in shape.

Question: In your most recent 1500 meter race, you nevertheless ran your fabulous 3:56.05 record, 16th all-time in the world. Does that give you extra confidence for Beijing?

Sifan: It was a good time, but I didn’t win that competition...

Question: At your last preparation race, in London, you also improved your personal best over 800 meters (1:59.46). Did you do extra work on your finishing speed?

Sifan: For this race I didn’t train different from what I used to do for the 1500m races. This 800m was my speed training.

Question: Which race this year stands out to you most?

Sifan: My 4:00 indoor race in .

Question: We al know by now about your relatively late start in athletics, meteoric rise, and continued progress. Are you surprised how much you keep improving?

Sifan: No, not really. I am training hard with my coach Honoré Hoedt to get faster and faster. I’m hoping I can still improve to a new level.

Question: As to the World Championships: there is a handful of most prominent medal favourites in the 1500 meters. You have beaten most of them this year at some point, is there a way to challenge (WR 3:50.07 in Monaco) as well?

Sifan: Everyone can be beaten, so there is always a way.

Question: The 800 meters is run after the 1500 meter final in China, are you interested in running that that distance there?

Sifan: Yes, I am. Maybe I will run both events.

4

Question: Olympic fever is already building. Can athletes such as yourself already look beyond Beijing to Rio?

Sifan: I am only looking at the World Championships in Beijing. I do it step by step.

Question: For you, 2016 may be even busier. Do you expect to defend your European title next year? Will you perhaps even run Cross Country again, where you won your first international title?

Sifan: I want to defend my 1500m title for sure! I may be running another distance as well, but I am not sure yet. I don’t know yet whether I will cross this year.

Question: Do you have any expectations how it will be to run the European Championships in your own country?

Sifan: I don’t know what to expect in . I think it will be very nice and I am looking forward to it! At this moment I cannot guess how it will be, but I can imagine it will be very special to run in orange for my home crowd! But first: World Champs in Beijing!

Good Luck in China … and beyond!
