Welcome to WVLOA's production of "Once Upon A Mattress", it has been a pleasure to return for a third time with such a talented staff, cast and crew.

"Once Upon A Mattress" was originally conceived as an adult one-act parody of the "Princess And The Pea" and was so well-received, that it was turned into a full-length musical comedy. Debuting in 1959 off Broadway with a then, unknown actress/comedian, (as Winnifred), the "Fractured Fairy Tale" feel of this new Mary Rodgers' musical made "Mattress" a runaway hit and subsequently, made a star out of Burnett. There have been many incarnations of "Mattress"; the original '59 version, the late '90's Broadway revival starring , and three TV versions, including the recent ABC movie starring Burnett as the Queen. But the original is the one that people always come back to!! Perhaps it's because underneath the farce, the Marx Brothers' -sryle physical comedy, the mistaken identities, the double entendres, there is heart, charm and a certain naivete that reminds us of a time when "adult" humor wasn't so blatant. It was something the whole family could enjoy. Om production has stayed true to all of the above. Heart and charm, with a bit of the Marx Brothers and standard old farce mixed right in. Enjoy your stay in om kingdom and don't be "Shy" to laugh out loud!!

-JeffM Hicks, Director

Her future goals are to finish cleaning her house (do we ever do that?), finish a summer outfit she started 2 years ago and live to see her grandchildren. By day, she teaches and tutors children in English and in her spare time likes knitting, reading, dancing and yoga. Her family consists of husband, Dennis, son, Michael, Homestead HS student and grown-up daughter, Jody. She's enjoying working with this terrific staff and cast to bring this comedic fairy tale to life. Donald Benson (Minstrel) Donald returns for his eleventh production with WVLO; having made his debut in the 1978 production of "My Fair Lady" and performing erratically with the group ever since, most recently as the judge in "Hello, Dolly!" He often plays a dirty old man, sometimes onstage Uncle Willie in "High Society", Mr. Whitney in "Anything Goes" and as Senex in SCP's production of ''A Funny Thing ... Forum". He has also been sighted at SDG, FMT, LACT, UCSC and, in the previous century, CMTSJ. He is a SJ native, writes advertising materials at the Mercury News and is inexplicably single. Jeremiah B. Clauss (Sir Luce) Jeremiah returns to WVLO after a 10-year absence for his second production-he was last seen as Charlie in ''Annie Get Your Gun". Most recently, he was seen as Eddie/Dr. Scott in "Rocky Horror Show" with ATC and has a long list of theatrical credits which include "Chess" & "Fid- dler ... Roof" with CMTSJ, "Secret Garden" with BBSC, "Oliver" and ''Annie'' with TITM and a West Coast Premiere of ''A Man Of No Importance". Jeremiah earned his BA in Theatre Arts at SFSU and has recorded his first album entitled "Crossing". Bob Collier (Sir Studley) Bob is a newcomer to WVLO, but since his first show was "Once Upon A Mattress" in 1990 when he played Sir Harry, he wanted to do it one more time!! His most recent productions were "The Miracle Worker" and "To Kill A Mockingbird". He is also a Past President of the Menlo Players Guild, is married with three children and earns his living as a Systems Analyst. His hobby is theater, of course, and his goal is to be cast in a leading role where he can make people think and cry!!This is such a fun show, he could n't pass up the chance to do it again!!! Bill Ereneta (Sir 2nd) Bill returns to our stage for his fourth production after an absence of8 years; other credits included "South Pacific", "HowTo Succeed ... " and "Carousel". A native of California, Laura is a chef for the City of SJ, enjoys mov- ies, singing, meditating, her daughter, Melissa, and her kittens, not necessarily in that order! She's attended Foothill College for 2 years and her goal is to obtain her Minister's License in the line of her meditation practices. Look for his next exciting production at ATC!! Jean Narunsky (Vocal/Music Director) We welcome Jean back to our staff after a 12-year absence. We've missed her baton, but she's been busy waving it around the BayArea-for SDG's pro- ductions of''A Little Night Music", "Fiddler On The Roof" and most recently "Oklahoma!"; as Music Director for SCP's recent production "City of Angels"; "Sweet Charity" for SJSU; "The World Goes 'Round" and "Last 5 Years" for Pear Street Theater. A graduate of Hartt College with a degree in Music Education, Jean is a self-described chocoholic, currently employed by the Starving Musician. She's been looking forward to conducting this musical again because it's such a serious show! Lisa Callaghan (Choreographer) Lisa is a newcomer to our staff, but she is no stranger to the stage or to dance. She's been dancing for 30 years and teaching around the Bay Area for the last 16 of those years. She most recently choreographed "If My Friends Could See Me Now" for a PHS fundraiser and had ap- peared in the Christmas shows staged there in previous years. She is currently employed at Almaden Country School and Atlas School of Dance. Lisa has a degree in Theatre and Dance from SCU and in her spare time, she enjoys the company of husband, Bob, and sons, Thomas (6) and Bryan (2). We look forward to seeing more of Lisa's terpsichorean efforts in our future productions. Stephen C. Wathen (Production Designer) Singing Stephen's praises as our set designer is easysince this is his 53rd (we think). His impressive career spans over 300 stage productions, 25 mov- ies and a few hundred TV shows. A playwright, well-known for his scripts, as well as his stage designs, his original productions of "Dracula" and "The Three Musketeers" were presented by Ohlone College in Fremont. He also designs for other BayArea theater groups, most recently "1776" for SDG, "The Rocky Horror Show" for ATC and has created special effects for George Lucas Films.

Michael earned his degree in Fine Arts, with a minor in dance, from SJSu.

Bob Wallitner (Production Stage Manager) Working on his seventh season in this position, Bob expends his time and talents in many capacities on our technical staff The "magic of the theater" keeps Bob enthralled with all the aspects of bringing a show to the stage and introducing him to so many close and caring friends who have become his theatrical family.

Bob Nelson (Sound Designer) This Bob joins us for his I-lth production; his most recent was "Oliver", our first show of the season. Other credits include "Flower Drum Song", "Seven Brides ... Brothers", "Forever Plaid", "George M!", ''Anything Goes" and many more. Judy Pincus (Costume Designer) Judy returns to a designing position after costuming "Oliver" last fall. This will be her 18th including "Big River", "Sweet Charity", ''Annie'', "Damn Yankees", just to name a few. Her most recent experience was costuming ATC's "The Rocky Horror Show", a challenging task to say the least!!
