he WCIL Associates Steering committee held their Annual Literary Tea Party on December 12, 2012. Our gracious hostess, Betty Deutsch, again opened T her beautiful holiday-bedecked house, personally greeting each guest while pianist, Jeff Lass, entertained in the living room (often cheerily accompanied by Associates Chair, Ruth Kraft, who knows the lyrics to just about every song ever written). The tea table was invitingly set with delicious home-made sandwiches and cookies. Artworks donated by Associate member Barbara Gordon were displayed for silent bidding as people mingled and reacquainted with old friends. Betty then introduced the guests to WCIL’s new Executive Director, Alan Toy, who introduced author, James Curtis. Mr. Curtis then gave an intimate and detailed look at the life and times of Spencer Tracy, straight from Tracy’s own papers and date books as recounted in Curtis’ book, “Spencer Tracy, A Biography.” Mr. Curtis delighted everyone with his charm, humor and his extensive knowledge of one of Hollywood’s brightest stars. He then answered questions, autographed his book and joined guests for photos. In the words of Noel Coward, it was a “Marvelous Party” and we “couldn’t have liked it more.” Louise Escoe, Jeanne Gerson, Betty Deutsch and guest.
