Baseball: Former SAC Teammates To Make Starters For Dodgers, Rangers Tonight

SANTA ANA, CA – For the first in Santa Ana College baseball history, two former teammates, C.J. Wilson and D.J. Houlton, will be making major league starts on the same day when the Texas Rangers host the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the face the San Diego Padres at Dodger Stadium, tonight (Monday, June 27). Wilson (1999-2000), who is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA, will be making just his second major league start when the Rangers (38-35) open a four-game series with the American League West-leading Angels (45-29) at 7:05 (CT) in Arlington, Texas. Wilson has appeared in four games this season including his first major league start against the on June 19. The former Dons’ outfielder/pitcher, suffered the loss against the Nationals giving up three earned runs on nine hits in 3- 2/3 innings of work. He struck out two and walked none. While at Santa Ana, Wilson compiled an 8-4 pitching record with a 4.35 ERA. He struck out 81 while walking 54 in 105 1/3 innings. Wilson played in 64 games as an outfielder finishing his career with a .376 batting average (89-for-237) with 46 RBI, 23 doubles and 15 home runs. The Dons were 68-29-1 during his two seasons and won an Orange Empire Conference baseball title in 2000 with an 18-6 mark. Following his sophomore season (2000), Wilson was named the OEC Player of the Year. Houlton (1998-1999), meanwhile, is 3-1 with a 5.72 ERA in 17 appearances for the Dodgers (35- 40). His last four appearances have been as a starter where he is 3-1 with a 4.43 ERA. Houlton, who picked up his third win of the season against the National League West-leading Padres last Tuesday (June 22), will face San Diego (42-34) for the second time in six days when the two teams square off at 7:10 (PT), tonight. While at Santa Ana, Houlton made 23 career appearances (four starts) and compiled a 7-2 overall record and a 4.47 ERA. He struck out 82 and walked 48 in 100 2/3 innings. The Dons were 65- 35 in Houlton’s two seasons. Wilson and Houlton were teammates on the 1999 Santa Ana College baseball team that finished 33- 20 overall. Santa Ana College currently has four former players playing in the major leagues in Wilson, Houlton, Daryle Ward (INF, ) and Heath Bell (RHP, New York Mets). Santa Ana College is a California community college institution and a member of the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) that includes Fullerton College, Golden West College, Irvine Valley College, Orange Coast College, Riverside College, Saddleback College, Santiago Canyon College.
