The number of college students getting tattoos has increased steadily over die years, said Iron Dan, tattooist at Tattoo Gallery in Grand Rapids. Newsweek reported that 20 years ago, only about 300 tattoo shops existed in America. Today, they report4000 certified shops. Iron Dan believes that MTV and Hollywood have contributed to the acceptance of tattoos through their media. Hesaid the most popular design among college students is small floral work. Atabout$100an hour, most students cannot afford large pieces. Mary Elwood, Grand Valley freshman, got a tattoo because it is something that no one can take away. "It's mine forever," she states.
