Despite this high praise, however, Pratchett receives relatively little critical attention. His work is fantasy and is often marginalized by academics-just like the rest ofthe geme. Pratchett has a tremendous following in England and a smaller but completely devoted fan base in the United States, not to mention enough readers all over the world to justify translation ofhis work into nearly thirty languages; yet, his popularity has not necessarily resulted in the respect that his writing deserves. However, there is considerable support for Pratchett's place in the literary canon, based on his use ofsatire and parody to treat major issues. 1 Aspects of Humanity: The Discworld Novels of Terry Pratchett Introduction Novelist Terry Pratchett is one ofEngland's most popular living writers; he is recognized, by virtue ofhis Discworld novels, as one ofthe leading satirists working today. -
Ankh-Morpork: the City As Protagonist
Ankh-Morpork: The City as Protagonist Anikó Sóhar Université Catholique Pázmány Péter Abstract: In science fiction and fantasy, sometimes the city (whether it is real or imaginary) plays the leading role, for example New York in Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin, or London in Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Often, as in the case of Newford in several novels and short stories by Charles de Lint, a made-up city with its fictional topography and maps corresponds to and accentuates the social relations as well as the emotions embedded in the narration; the geography can indeed be emotional as it was so aptly put by Sir Terry Pratchett when he appointed Rincewind (one of his regularly popping-up characters) “Egregious Professor of Cruel and Unusual Geography of Unseen University” (among other jobs). Sir Terry also dreamt up a very significant city called Ankh-Morpork in his Discworld series (which might have been based on Budapest) which offers a perfect topic for discussion. Ankh-Morpork, which was a simple although very funny parody of a typical city in fantasy fiction at the beginning, gradually becomes a setting for emancipation, liberation and disenthralment from various bonds, and provides ample examples of references to British and internationalised culture. The city itself does not play a leading role in any of the novels, but when the whole series is taken into consideration, its significance is immediately apparent, the whole series forms a sort of bildungsroman which describes the maturation process of Ankh-Morpork. The whole sensational landscape created for our amusement as well as intellectual and moral benefit could be accurately mapped in terms of literary-cum-urban-studies, geopoetics, focusing on several aspects of social criticism. -

Kaitlin Williams B.A., Auburn University M.A., Appalachian State University Chairperson: James Ivory This thesis explores educational ideology in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series with a continued focus on the ways gendered magic results in gendered knowledge and education. Pratchett’s witches and wizards demonstrate and even consciously uphold distinct gender separation regarding magical practice, methodology, knowledge, and responsibility. By fracturing the magical community into two distinct factions, Pratchett’s work positions the witches and wizards of Discworld as ideological oppositions. An in-depth analysis of the wizards and Unseen University traces their associations with the history of the British educational system, male privilege, academic elitism, and tradition, reading their order as indicative of the “norm” and a repressive dominant educational ideology. -

Hugvísindasvið “Who watches the watchmen?” Power Relationships in the Discworld Watch Series B.A. Essay Elísabet Jónsdóttir Maí 2014 University of Iceland School of Humanities Department of English “Who watches the watchmen?” Power Relationships in the Discworld Watch Series B.A Essay Elísabet Jónsdóttir Kt.:1707913049 Supervisor: Anna Heiða Pálsdóttir Maí 2014 Abstract This essay explores some chosen books from the popular Watch series written by Terry Pratchett in the period from 1994 to 2006 in order to analyze power relationships and the growth and character development of Samuel Vimes into a respected authority figure and a power-player of equal standing and importance as the ruler of the city and the heir to the throne. Samuel Vimes is the main protagonist of the Watch sub series of Pratchett’s Discworld book series. Vimes is the head of the police force, which is called the Watch, in Ankh-Morpork, the largest city on the Discworld. The first part of the essay examines Vimes’s character traits and personality, focusing on the three-part split in his personality and how it corresponds to the Freudian three part model of the psyche. The analysis of Vimes’s personality is an important foundation for further analysis in the essay as throughout the Watch series Vimes moves from being simply an alcoholic policeman in dented armor to being a respected and feared pillar of the community. The essay also deals with the beginning of Vimes’s growth as an established authority figure due to the recognition of his unique abilities when it comes to influencing and controlling Carrot Ironfoundersson, the secret heir to the throne of Ankh-Morpork and a fellow policeman. -

2008:124 BACHELOR THESIS A Study of the Translation of Names and Invented Words in Terry Pratchett’s Soul Music Lii Kämpe Luleå University of Technology Bachelor thesis English Department of Language and Culture 2008:124 - ISSN: 1402-1773 - ISRN: LTU-CUPP--08/124--SE A study of the translation of names and invented words in Terry Pratchett’s Soul Music Lii Kämpe 2008-06-03 Department of Languages and Culture Supervisor: Marie Nordlund English C Abstract The aim of this essay is to determine whether Peter Lindforss's translation of names and invented words in Terry Pratchett's novel Soul Music corresponds to the original. All proper names have been studied, both personal and geographical. This has been achieved through parallel reading of the original novel and the translation Levande Musik. Soul Music is a highly comical novel. Therefore the emphasis of the study is on the humorous aspects of names and invented words. Overall, Lindforss’s translation is well accomplished and preserves the humour to a great extent. The translation of invented words examined is nearly immaculate. However, some of the names are poorly translated, lowering the humorous quality of the text. Table of contents 1. Lisäksi hän kirjoitti useita teoksia kyseisen sarjan oheiskirjallisuudeksi, ja myös muita romaaneja ja tarinoita. Uransa aikana Pratchett tuli tunnetuksi Alzheimerin tautiin sairastuneiden puolestapuhujana kerrottuaan diagnoosistaan julkisuudessa vuonna 2007. were two embers. 'Well? What do you want at this time of night?' The golem handed him a slate, on which was written: WE HEAR YOU WANT A GOLEM. Of course, golems couldn't speak, could they? 'Hah. Want, yes. Afford, no. I've been asking around but it's wicked the prices you're going for these days . .' The golem rubbed the words off the slate and wrote: TO YOU, ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS. 'You're for sale?' NO. The golem lurched aside. Another one stepped into the light. It was also a golem, the man could see that. But it wasn't like the usual lumpen clay things that you occasionally saw. This one gleamed like a newly polished statue, perfect down to the detailing of the clothes. It re- minded him of one of the old pictures of the city's kings, all haughty stance and imperious haircut. In fact, it even had a small coronet moulded on to its head. 'A hundred dollars?' the man said suspiciously. 'What's wrong with it? Who's selling it?' NOTHING IS WRONG. PERFECT IN ALL DETAIL. NINETY DOLLARS. 'Sounds like someone wants to get rid of it in a hurry . .' GOLEM MUST WORK. GOLEM MUST HAVE A MASTER. 'Yeah, right, but you hear stories . Going mad and making too many things, and that.' NOT MAD. EIGHTY DOLLARS. 'It looks . new,' said the man, tapping the gleaming chest. 'But no one's making golems any more, that's what's keeping the price up beyond the purse of the small business-' He stopped.
