1 Description: Methodology in Catechesis is a self-paced, independent and/or online component to the Basic Catechist Certification for Teachers. There are three options to choose from to complete the requirement for certification.

OPTION 1: INDEPENDENT STUDY

OPTION 2: ONLINE COURSE Notre Dame Course: Six Tasks of Catechesis Component B: To Register: Six Tasks of Catechesis/ Course Cost: $50 Methodology Required Text: All course materials are available online in the course. Required Assignment: Completion of Course Certificate will be uploaded for diocesan records following the completion of all three certification components.

OPTION 3: ONLINE COURSE University of Dayton Course: Introduction to Catechesis To Register: UDayton Registration Course Cost: $50 + Books ($24-$44) Required Text: (see course description online for details) . 2 METHODOLOGY OPTION 1 – CONT’D

Overview: Methodology in Catechesis: Option 1 is an independent study option with two parts in the Basic Catechist Certification for Catholic School Teachers: Six Tasks of Catechesis and The Catechist’s Toolbox.

Part 1 focuses on the Six Task of Catechesis as introduced in the General Directory of Catechesis in 1997 and affirmed in the National Directory for Catechesis published in 2005. These books are the work of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to Component B: help catechists in understanding the mission of the Church, the role of the catechist, Methodology and how to bring others to Christ. The Six Tasks are introduced as the main components to include in catechetical instruction. The Diocese of Raleigh Religion Curriculum is built on these six tasks.

Part 2 focuses on how to thrive as a Teacher. In his book, The Catechist’s Toolbox, Joe Paprocki shares practical advice and tips you can use in your classroom. The book facilitates a transformation from “teacher” to “catechist” where the teacher not only gives content to students, but rather forms them in the faith.

3 Directions: Read through each slide of this PowerPoint Presentation. Some slides will contain reflection questions and/or activities which are designed to help in the development of the required assignment.

Component B: Recommended: Methodology Print this presentation to take notes as your go through and respond to the reflection questions. Required Assignment: Identify the Six Tasks of Catechesis and how you could incorporate each of these into your classroom lesson plans. This can be in a written reflection, chart, or graphic organizer.

Assignment will be uploaded for diocesan records following the completion of all three certification components.

4 Basic Certification Application: Once all three components: Foundation in Catholic Doctrine, Methodology of Catechesis, and Catholic School Culture are completed and course certificates and/or required assignments have been saved for uploading (either as a word document, pdf, or photo) you will submit an online application for diocesan review. It is essential all work and course certificates are saved and easily Component B: accessible for uploading to beginning the application process. Part 1, the Six Tasks of Catechesis, demonstrates the key elements a catechist should incorporate into lesson planning. These elements help to develop a well balanced faith life for the catechist and the learner when all are exhibited in the classroom.

7 Six Tasks of Catechesis: Overview

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) have developed two books to help catechists in understanding the mission of the Church, the role of the catechist, and how to bring others to Christ. This slide is to introduce you to these books as a reference tool you can use in your classroom. These books are available for purchase through http://store.usccb.org/Catechesis-s/1935.htm or another vendor of choice.

The General Directory for A companion to the General Catechesis (GDC) provides Directory for Catechesis religious teachers, (GDC), the National teachers, and catechists Directory for Catechesis with a single point of (NDC) builds on some of the reference for all aspects of core themes of the GDC, like catechetical instruction. catechesis's relationship to evangelization and worship, and provides practical tools for doing catechesis well.

8 Six Tasks of Catechesis: Overview

The Catechism of the (CCC) is the authentic reference text for teaching Catholic doctrine.

The Catechism is arranged in four principal parts, often referred to as the Four Pillars of Faith: • The Profession of Faith (the Apostle's Creed) • The Celebration of the Christian Mystery (the Sacred Liturgy, and especially the sacraments) • Life in Christ (including the Ten Commandments) • Christian Prayer (including the Lord's Prayer)

10 Task 1: Promoting Knowledge of Faith

Promote knowledge of the faith – Teach the “basics” of the faith as revealed in the signs of creation, Sacred Scripture, Catholic tradition and human experience.

Make note: In the curriculum, each task is labeled and the guide gives the catechist essential concepts, core content, Scripture references, Catechism(CCC) references and the vocabulary the students should be learning.

Liturgical Education – Teach about the form and meaning of the liturgy and the sacraments and help individuals prepare their minds and hearts to enter into these mysteries of our faith.

Moral Formation: Teach the moral teachings of the Church which are the fulfillment of the Commandments.
