CENTER ON HALSTED FACTS

Center on Halsted is the Midwest’s largest and most comprehensive community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons. As a resource and gathering place for youth, adults, and seniors, Center on Halsted is a safe, inviting atmosphere that provides diverse programming and services to meet the cultural, emotional, social, educational, and physical needs of ’s LGBT community and friends.

The Center’s 175,000 square foot, Silver LEED certified facility (an environmental leadership award) contains a Whole Foods Market and parking, a theater, a multipurpose gymnasium, a rooftop garden, dedicated space for youth and senior programming, a counseling suite, and space for community meetings and conferences.

Human First 2011 will enable Center on Halsted to support an expected 365,000 people this year through our:

• Youth Program for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning youth and their allies (ages 13 24), which provides safe, supportive, and confidential social programs. In FY2010, over 800 young people, 25% of whom are homeless, are engaged in leadership development, substance abuse support, educational and vocational development, HIV/AIDS and STD prevention, recreational programming, and arts and cultural development.

• Mental Health Services, which provides over 6,000 hours of low cost or no cost individual, couples, family, and group counseling each year by diverse LGBT mental health providers.

• Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Institute (SOGI), providing professional continuing education workshops and trainings for graduate students and mental health professionals.

• Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) Program, which meets the unique needs of over 150 LGBT elders each week through support/discussion groups, educational workshops, and artistic, cultural and recreational activities.

• Anti-Violence Project which provides direct support to individuals affected by anti-LGBT hate crimes, domestic violence, sexual assault, discrimination, and police misconduct.

• Community and Cultural Programs that provide 5,000 individuals annually with dance, music and theater complemented by a variety of recreational and workforce development opportunities.

• Legal Program that offers free access to legal information and referrals.

• State of Illinois HIV/AIDS and STD Hotline, which provides confidential information (in English and Spanish) to15,000 people throughout the state of Illinois.

• HIV Testing & Prevention Program provides free, confidential, and anonymous rapid HIV testing and counseling (in English and Spanish) to more than 2,500 individuals annually.

• Community Technology Center which bridges the digital divide through 60 hours per week of free online access, computer technology training, and workforce development support.

• Resident Community Partners, for which the Center acts as an incubator, providing operational support beyond the traditional landlord-tenant relationship. These cultural, recreational and advocacy organizations that strengthen our LGBT community are: A Church 4 Me/Metropolitan Community Church, Association of Latino Men for Action (ALMA), Amigas Latinas, the Chicago Area Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, the NAMES Project- Chicago Chapter, Northalsted Business Alliance, Windy City Performing Arts, and Windy City Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf.

The proceeds raised from the Human First Gala 2011 goes to support the programs at Center on Halsted. Here are just a few things that your support has allowed us to do in the past year.

PUBLIC PROGRAMS

Community & Cultural Programs: nearly 5,000 participants in FY2010; theater and music; art exhibits; basketball/volleyball; film screenings; lectures; and book signings

Community Technology Center: assistance to 500 a week; free online access; technology/software training; résumé creation; job searches; Internet and computer skills development

Family Programs: allows LGBT and ally families to gather in a positive and affirming environment

SAGE (Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders): 150 seniors a week; Friendly Visitor program, Coffee, and Conversation; cultural outings; movie nights; workshops and seminars

Recreation Prorgams: open gym; yoga

Transgender Prorgams: open mic night; seminars; movies

Women’s Prorgams: discusion topics include: health, arts and politics; speed dating

SOCIAL SERVICES
