Front cover design: Jonty Sherwill - www.sherwilldesian.com - 01329 835555 As I write, I am very conscious that certainly autumn is nearly over and winter will then be on the horizon: what does this mean for us as a caring and loving parish and community? I suggest it means that we should be looking out for our neighbours, especially if the weather is bad. Being a good neighbour means keeping a careful eye to make sure they have everything they need..

Welcome almost to October never to be seen again this year. As the nights draw in, we sit by our fires and watch television, or maybe knit or read. We have enjoyed our Harvest Festival and now move to that time of year when we remember those who died in time of war so that we may enjoy our freedom. The RBL service of remembrance will be held at St Peter's this year, as we remember especially all who died in WW1.

The annual service for All Souls will take place at St Peter's on the 4"^ November, our opportunity to remember all those who have gone before us in these villages. Do join us and remember your loved ones at a quiet reflective service.

Our young organist has left us to go to Bristol University to read Music. Joe has played our organs magnificently. When he arrived in Soberton just over four years ago he was very unsure and he took time to acquaint himself with the two organs, but very quickly formed good relationships with our congregations. When he left us last month with excellent A level results he was without doubt on the road to a musical career of some substance. We look forward to Joe's return during vacations; he is enthusiastic about 'filling in' so the new organists can have a break.

I am now looking forward to "All Saints Day" on the 4"^ November followed by the season of Advent beginning on the 2"^ December; we will then be travelling towards Christmas and all that means to us all. This journey is one that I need and look fon/vard to, it would be really great if you were to join me; all the details will be elsewhere in the magazine.

Pastoral care in the benefice is important for all of us; I try to visit people at times of their need, sickness, loneliness, and death, preparation for baptism, marriage and many other issues and problems.

I need your help - please let me know when you hear of someone in need of a visit. My visits are short and meaningful and I hope welcomed by those who appreciate a friendly visit. I look forward to hearing from you when the need arises. Thank you.

As readers will know we are in an interregnum or a vacancy, we remain without a priest, but movement is on the horizon. After a period of public consultation and consultation within the parishes a Pastoral Scheme for the benefices of Soberton, Newtown and Hambledon has been approved by the Church Commissioners. This means that each of the three parishes will retain their own identity under one priest. Advertisements have been placed in the Church Times. We now await applications from possible candidates. In the meantime the parishes continue with their welcome, pastoral care and mission.

Every good wish and blessing as we travel together in the coming weeks.

Norman Everybody needs Good Neighbours at some time

How to you get to the doctor's or hospital appointments if you can't drive because of illness or injury? Call a friend perhaps. Or maybe persuade someone in the family to give you a lift. If that's not possible, people in Newtown and Soberton are lucky enough to have another option - The Good Neighbours group, which answers dozens of calls every year -from young and old (and in between)- for assistance with medical appointments and getting to lunch clubs. The group has about 20 volunteer drivers who use their own cars, so we can usually find someone to help, provided we get reasonable notice. All our drivers are DBS (formerly ORB)checked. The Good Neighbours Group has been part of village life for 28 years and, as part of the Good Neighbours Network umbrella group run by the local dioceses, is fully insured for public liability, personal accident and monetary loss. The group makes a charge for the service to cover fuel and wear and tear. The charges (see box below) should be paid direct to the driver.

Wherever practical your driver will Swanmore/ and back £3.50 wait and bring you home. If your Wickham/Blshops Waltham and back £4.50 appointment is long we may need to Q.A. Hospital and Fareham £7.00 book a second driver to collect you. Fareham Community Hospital £10.00 Winchester and Hospitals £13.50 Parking charges will be extra. If you would like to find out more or to book transport please ring one of our Co-ordinators Sue Musselwhite on 01489 877282 or Phil Bergin on 02392 632551. You can also find these numbers on the inside back page of the magazine.

Meon Valley Pilarimaae Trail 2018

This 28-mile walk up the Meon Valley was planned as a suggested route which might have been taken by St Wilfrid, Bishop of York, in the late T*'' century as he travelled through the lands of the Meonwara tribe, preaching Christianity. The walk starts at Titchfield Haven and follows the length of the river in six stages averaging five miles.

Walkers from the villages of the Meon Valley have gathered every year on the Saturday nearest to St Wilfrid's Day (IZ"" October) to walk a section of the trail. This year, the walk will cover the final section, from West Meon to East Meon.

Please join us on Saturday 13*'' October at the church of St John the Evangelist in West Meon in time to set off at 9.45.am. We should arrive at All Saints church. East Meon at midday. We will be welcomed with refreshments and a short service before dispersing, either to return home or to honour the old English tradition and walk on down to Ye Olde George or round the corner to the Izaak Walton.

As this is a linear walk with no bus service you may wish to consider car sharing. There is a free car park in East Meon on the road in from West Meon.

As usual, PiNS will produce its Christmas greetings page in the Parish Magazine this year. Thanks to your generosity in previous years we have been able to renovate many of the most dilapidated fingerposts in our area.

The major project is still to have a new sign made from scratch for the junction of Liberty Road and Kiln Hill. This is now approaching completion and we hope to see it in situ shortly.

If you would like to support PiNS in our work in the Parish and send Christmas greetings to your local friends and neighbours without the cost of cards and stamps, please fill in the slip below and send a donation. If you have any suggestions for other projects you would like considered, please also let us know.

All you have to do is:-

• Enter the names you would like on the 'card' on the slip below. • Cut out the slip and put it and your donation in an envelope(make any cheques payable to PiNS please). • Push this through the letterbox at Ashley House, High Street, Soberton, opposite the bank before Thursday 1st November so that there is time to prepare and catch the magazine copy date. Children's Week 2018

The Leadership Team would like to thank everyone who was involved in this year's activity week: The Group Leaders - who lead the children's teams The Adult Helpers- who supported the group leaders The Kitchen Friends for the drinks and washing-up never ending paintbrushes! The Teenagers who helped support the adults And all the behind-the-scenes people who worked very hard before, and after, to organise the trip, the activities and the general admin; without which the week would not be able to happen.

This year we made County Maps to display around the villages,( 9 in total) and our special thanks go to Sydenhams Timber for supplying the wood and John Raskins for cutting out and making stands for the maps.

Also a very BIG thank you to Fra & Sue Wells for allowing us, once again, to invade their gardens. And lastly, thank you to the Meon Valley Lions, who lent us their Minibus to transport the Children (and craft) around on the Friday. Making life just a little easier!

We will be starting the planning and admin in January for CW2019 - so if you can help, in any way, we'd love to hear from you. You don't need to have children attending to help, many of our helpers are child free. So whether you can volunteer for a few hours or a few days, we always have a job you can help with.

Thank you again to everyone who got involved.

Ready for Winter

Over one million square metres of Hampshire roads have been renewed and are ready for winter. Hampshire Highways teams made the most of the hot dry summer and renewed hundreds of miles of some of the County's busiest roads to reduce potholes forming this winter. They completed over 300 surface dressing schemes, equivalent in size to 142 football pitches. Surface dressing is a preventative measure and extends the life of the roads.

Targeted Health Checks

As part of a new £9 million contract with health providers, starting in April 2019, Hampshire County Council is aiming to increase the uptake of free Health Checks by Hampshire residents, particularly those most at risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

The County Council is responsible for ensuring Hampshire residents aged 40-75 years are invited for regular health reviews by their GP surgeries. Currently just under half of those people invited take up the offer of a check. This is something we want to see improve, so through a new contract with CPs and other health providers, we are aiming to increase the uptake numbers.

The NHS Health Check programme aims to prevent heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and kidney disease, and raise awareness of dementia both across the population and within high risk and vulnerable groups. Health checks are normally undertaken by practice nursing teams. Cardiovascular disease is the second most common cause of death in Hampshire. According to the British Heart Foundation, healthcare costs relating to cardiovascular disease are estimated at £9 billion each year.

Probation Report

The County Council has welcomed the outcome of a review by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Probation [HM! Probation] of the Council's Youth Offending Service. The report, published in September 2018, identifies Hampshire as one of two local authorities to be judged as "good" with some features found to be outstanding. The report also states that Hampshire's Youth Offending Service [YOS] provides an excellent range of interventions to reduce the likelihood of offending.

Libraries Refurbished Hampshire Libraries are being refurbished and modernised to make library spaces fresh, versatile and equipped with modem technologies for everyone to access and enjoy. Since the start of this year, Totton and Romsey Libraries, and Gosport Discovery Centre have reopened their doors following extensive improvements. By late autumn we will also have installed easy to use self-service technology across all of our Library branches making it easy for customers to issue and return stock items quickly and easily. The refurbishment and investment demonstrates the County Council's commitment to ensuring that Libraries remain at the heart of their local communities, and is included in our Hampshire's Library Strategy to 2020. To get involved with activities and events at your local Library visit - https://www.hants.gov.uk/librarv.

Community Spirit

Work carried out by community groups across Hampshire on a range of initiatives to provide strong and inclusive communities, such as supporting people living with dementia, boosting access to green spaces and helping those at risk of being homeless, has been awarded £126,215 from Hampshire County Council. Funding is from the Community Capital Fund 2018/2019 and the Culture and Community Activity Grants 2018/2019.

Winchester District grants include £3,000 towards a weekly activity group for people who have dementia, their partners and/or carers and wider community members; £1,240 towards a fortnightly community cinema, particularly for older people and £3,525 towards an upgrade of a village hall's heating system and controls to improve energy efficiency. The outside space will be improved by creating a garden area which will increase hireable space, and changes will be made to make the access to the storage shed outside better.

Crisis Funding

As the relevant Cabinet member, I have recently given approval to make grants from the Local Welfare Assistance(LWA) budget totaling £80,500 over 2 years to local Borough and District Councils to support families in crisis. LWA funding has been used by the County Council to fund and support innovative solutions to welfare concerns throughout Hampshire. Through the continued commitment ofthe County Council to deliver crisis support to vulnerable residents, providing funding to families in crisis has remained a key priority focus.

Connect to Support Hampshire

The web site - connecttosupporthampshire.org.uk - is an online information and advice guide and directory of services for adult residents in Hampshire where you will find information, advice and services to manage your own care and wellbeing. You can find out about local groups, activities and services within your community as well as formal care provision.

This document contains important information about our local flood risk. Please take the time to read.

Background

Soberton Parish Councirs Flood Action Group exists to advise and help land and property owners prepare for, and hopefully prevent, flooding throughout the villages within the Parish.

The Flood Action Plan (written by the Flood Action Group) will aim to alert residents, parish volunteers, the Parish and County Council (HCC) and, when required, the emergency services to a flooding event. The group will work collectively with volunteers to direct residents to sand bag locations, identify safe havens and identify and prioritise assistance for vulnerable or elderly residents.

Soberton, Soberton Heath, Newtown and Hoe Gate can be affected by two forms of flooding;

• Surface Water runoff which is caused by intense rainfall culminating in overwhelmed drainage systems and surface pooling. This type of flood event is generally caused by either blocked drains or the reduced capacity of local surface water drainage systems. • Ground Water flooding is where the aquifer within the permeable chalk bedrock rises to above the ground surface due to prolonged rainfall. Flood water can emerge in dry riverbeds and exceptionally springs may appear on higher slopes of the Downs. This type of flooding tends to subside more slowly than surface water events. Surface water runoff is predictable and can be effectively managed. Drains, culverts and open ditches need to be maintained to allow the free flow of water towards receiving watercourses, such as streams or the river. It is an offence for a home or land owner to prevent the natural flow of water across their property. In areas without mains drainage in need of open ditch systems you are termed a 'Riparian Owner'. A Riparian owners' responsibilities, and the enforcement of which, relates to the Land drainage act 1991 and the Public Health Act 1936. Generally, it is a lack of maintenance, such as blocked drains or ditches, which cause a backup in the drainage flow. This is the cause of most local floods. Rising levels of ground water (the chalk aquifer) can also be predicted. The Environment Agency has mapped (see their website https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/environment-agencv and type in your postcode) all areas zoning them as 1,2 and 3. It is zones 2 and 3 where there is a high risk of flooding as flooding has been seen in the past 30 years. In some cases, ground water springs can be managed and directed like surface water at the point at which they emerge from the ground. A number of dwellings were listed as flooded in 2003 when the aquifer was very high, a report was produced by the Engineering Consultants Halcrow on that flood period (the Parish Council has a copy if anyone is interested). To reduce the risk of flooding it is essential that all ditches and water courses are maintained. Culverts connecting ditches(below access to houses or field entrances) must be kept clear of debris and be of sufficient size to receive storm flows. Drains must be regularly jetted and cleaned. Some drains are the responsibility of Hampshire County Council's highways department and are routinely Jetted by HCC and in some instances as an emergency call out. Many of our highway drains run into soakaways and can back up in times of excessive rainfall.

Who is responsible? It is the land owner or the Hampshire highways department(under HCC) who have responsibility for water management in an area not serviced by mains drainage. In such an area water flows downhill, historically along natural watercourses and ditches(some which only appear in the winter). Again, it is against the law for land owners downstream to prevent natural flows of water crossing their land.

A simple example:- If there is a ditch running in front of your drive or house, and it has blocked or has been filled in, it is your responsibility to clear it out or reinstate it. If it is a road drain or culvert HCC(Highways department) will carry out the clearance work.

How can the Parish Council help?

The Parish Council has no funding or direct labour to call on to carry out riparian maintenance work. If you need to investigate or improve the state of your ditch then please do this as soon as possible, most importantly before the winter. If you have concerns over a flooding issue and you believe the natural flow of water has been impeded then there are a number of ways in which we,the Flood Action Group can help you.

The Flood Action Group can:-

Write to your neighbouring properties to ask for corrective measures to be taken to improve the flow of water. Assist in these householder's investigations to establish whether the watercourse is functioning (for example the supply of rodding lines). Where a number of ditches are in extremely poor repair, liaise with the householders concerned to establish a collective 'working party' or a collective 'contractor hire' to carry out maintenance on a number of properties. Engage the support and expertise of the Flood and Water Management Team at HCC who also have powers to enforce the Land drainage act 1991 and Public Health Act 1936. In the event of a Highways issue, the Parish Council will speak with HCC and request urgent action on your behalf. There is a link to the 'Hampshire County Council flood risk and management for landowners leaflet' on the Parish website www.soberton .ore and the Parish Magazine website http://www.sobertonchurch.org.uk/parish-magazine/

The visit to the Real Flower Company's rose growing gardens near Hinton Ampner in August was well supported. We were given a very informative talk by the head gardener and the owner. Not only did we see the roses but a vast range of herbs and shrubs they grow which are included in their bouquets and send to their shop in London. Some members took advantage of the plant sale area and were seen heading off with new plants for their gardens. And now for something completely different! Our September talk was entitled Life below Decks on the Royal Yacht Britannia by Mike Hill. He gave a really interesting and amusing account of his time as a stores officer from June 1960 until December 1963. He certainly saw a lot of the world and experienced some wonderful events. His favourite tour was to New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific islands. What a wonderful time he had. He is still an active member of the Royal Yacht Association. Talks for the rest of the year include Woodland plants by Roger Hirons and Mighty Greens by Chris Bird. Non - members are always welcome. We also have our very popular Autumn plant sale on Saturday 6"^ October at 10.00am in the Droxford Hall.

.... on 11"^ November 1918, the guns at last fell silent. Defeated, demoralized, starving and on the verge of mutiny, Germany had declared a republic; Kaiser Wiihelm II had abdicated, and the new administration or THE OP EAT T/AP sought peace terms. The Austro-Hungarian Empire had already collapsed and signed an armistice with the Aiiies. Shortly after dawn, France's Marshal Foch accepts Germany's surrender on behalf of the Allies with armistice terms taking effect at 11.00am. Although the Great War would not officially end until the Treaty of Versailles had been signed on 28'^ June 1919, the fighting on the Western Front was over, leaving over 10 million dead; of these, some V* miliion were British with V* million from the British Empire. More than half have no known grave. To quote a veteran: "We were too far gone, too exhausted really, to enjoy it. There was no cheering, no singing...we simply celebrated the Armistice in silence and thankfulness that it was all over. We were drained of all emotion...and then it was a question of when we were going to get home." .some corner of a foreign field which is forever England" Remembrance Sunday is on 1 Novenriber 2018 which ai^ marks the centenary of Armistice Day. The RBL Service of Remembrance will take place at 1050 at St Peter's Church, Soberton with other services held locally are shown in The Bridge magazine. In the preceding weeks, the Branch will be displaying 'Silent Soldier' - a silhouette depicting a soldier returning to his community at the end of the war. In stark contrast to the patriotic fervour and cheering crowds that waved soldiers off to war, many returned singly, quietly, traumatised and irrevocably changed by their experiences. Our 'Silent (Soldier' will appear in each of our villages. As the many war memorials and cemeteries testify, the (human sacrifice was appalling, and few families escaped the pain of bereavement. We remember the fallen with pride and share the sorrow of their loved-ones. The next meeting will be our Annual General Meeting at 1900 on Monday 12'' November at iOroxford Village Hall which will be followed by a presentation on the Great Pilgrimage 90. Prior i to that, we will be holding our annual dinner on Monday 8'" October at the Bat and Ball at iBroadhalfpenny Down, 7.00 for 7.30 pm. Contrary to popular belief, the Great War was not the bloodiest conflict in history - probably taking 5"' place in that tragic league. Of more than 10 million military deaths, over one million were from the British Empire with Great Britain and Ireland, Australia, Canada, Newfoundland, India, New Zealand and South Africa bearing the brunt. Our Allies (the Entente Powers), notably France and Russia, lost over 6 million while our enemies (the Central Powers)- German, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires - lost over 4 million. Military wounded accounted for twice these numbers and many of these would be severely disabled or die early from their wounds. In addition, there were more than 6 million civilian deaths directly attributable to the war, including victims of an influenza epidemic that swept across Europe in its aftermath - taking its toll of a weakened and malnourished population. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) maintains 1.7 million graves and memorials from all wars at 23,000 locations in 150 countries. These range in size from Tyne Cot near Passchendaele with nearly 12,000 graves to small cemeteries with as few as 4 graves. Ages of those interred range from 14 to 67 years. Those for whom there are no known graves are commemorated on one of the many memorials, the largest of which is at Thiepval on the Somme with 72,000 names recorded thereon - the so-called "Missing of the Somme".

The RBL Droxford & District Branch is always looking for new members, both Service and civilian, to help keep remembrance alive and support our Servicemen and women, veterans and their families. For more information or to join us, please contact the Secretary - Cdr Rob Scott RN at robmunroscott&aol.com or 01489 877800. www.soberton.org/rblweb. ROLL OF HONOUR(SOBERTON & NEWTOWN)

Although most people In Soberton and Newtown were overjoyed when news came through of the signing of the Armistice there were a few families who had recently heard of the deaths of their loved ones or were still waiting the news. They must have asked questioned how and why their man had got so near to the end and then died, for the summer and autumn of 1918 was a sad time for families and friends of the following

A. J. Searle(c 1888-1918) Alfred John was the son of Alfred and Ellen/Esther Searle of Cold Hill. It Is assumed he attended Soberton School as a sibling Is recorded In the limited Admission Register available. Private A.J. Searle (No. PO/14576)Joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry, Portsmouth Division. John, according to Soberton Burial Register, died of Influenza and was burled In Soberton churchyard on the 8"^ June 1918.

Jack Bevis (1885-1918) Jack's next of kin was given as his mother Mrs. E.A. Bevis, of Chip Hall, WIckham. It Is likely that his father was Charles who died In 1921 aged 73 at Chlphall. The family had at some time lived In Liberty Rd. Jack Joined the Canadian Infantry (Eastern Ontario Regiment) 21®' Bn Service No. 4020901 and died In France on the 28"' August 1918. He Is burled In the VIs-en-Artols British Cemetery, Haucourt, Pas de Calais

Wallace George Pyle (1895 -1918) was son of William and Ruth Pyle who farmed at Hoegate. He had attended a Dame School before being admitted to Newtown School, almost certainly the Dame school run by Elizabeth Weston at Governess Cottage, later replaced by Rose Thicket. George, as he was known, was a gunner with the Royal Marine Artillery. He was with the "Howitzer" Brigade and quite likely received his training at Fort Cumberland, Portsmouth. Gunner Pyle died on the 12"* October 1918 In the Alsne Department, France and was burled In Vadencourt New British Cemetery at Malsaemy. It Is a comparatively small cemetery enclosed by a rubble wall In a rural location and appears to be appropriately adjacent to a farm. His sister married Charles Stiggants who farmed Russell's Farm so he had been very much part of the farming community.

J.C. Hillier(1897-1918) Newtown memorial shows he served with the 8'" Battalion of the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. From there It was found that this was In fact Pte. Dennis Claude Hlllyer and parents given were Louisa and Herbert Tee of St. Martin's Corner, Hambledon. The 1911 census shows Dennis as the stepson of Herbert Tee and that he was born In Portsmouth. He Is not on the Newtown Admission register so perhaps he attended Hambledon School. At the outbreak of war Dennis was about 16 or 17 and It Is Intriguing to know why he should Join a Yorkshire Regiment. It appears that the 8"'(Service) Battalion were In Hampshire from December 1914, first at Aldershot, then Hythe and finally Bordon before leaving for Boulogne In August 1915. Dennis presumably enlisted at one of the Hampshire locations. They saw action In France before being sent from the Somme In November 1917 to strengthen the Italian resistance after Italy had suffered a disaster at the Battle of Caporetto. (Formerly part of Austro-Hungarlan Empire now Slovenia). In November 1917 the battalion moved to Italy. Pte. 43854 Hlllyer was killed In action whilst crossing the River Plave In Italy on the 28"' October 1918. He Is burled In the cemetery Tezze, north of Venice.

William Messam (W.R. or W.O.)(c1887-1918) As a child William lived with his grandparents John and Mary Ann Messam. John worked for HM Woods In Bere Forest and In the 1891 census the address was The Forest but by 1901 they were living In Chapel Road. William's birthplace was given as Soberton but so far we have not found him In parish birth or marriage registers of either church but then the Messam Family were prominent at Soberton chapel. William married and had a daughter Gertrude born In 1910. She attended Soberton School for a time but left to live In Leicester. William Joined the East Surrey regiment but was later transferred to Employment Company, Labour Corps. He died In the December of 1918 In Greece and Is burled In the MIkra British Cemetery at Kalamarl about 8 miles from Thessalonlka. He was aged 31. His next of kin was given as his wife, G.A. Hawkins (formerly Messam)of 115 Church Gate, Leicester. Film Club

A Summer of Fun and Fundraisint jHH As autumn approaches and the memories of a fantastic summer fade, the Meon Valley Lions can look back at an exciting few months of fund-raising and frolics. During the summer we were busy attending numerous community and charity fund-raising events. One of the new events on the calendar was the Bishop's Waltham "KidsTreat" fun day organised by the Bishop's Waltham Town Team. Based on a concept someone had seen while on holiday in Portugal, the idea was to give over the whole town centre for an afternoon of fun activities and games, purely and simply to entertain the young people of the town. There was a massive turn out and everyone seemed to have a splendid few hours courtesy of the numerous clubs and charities who volunteered to provide the activities. The Lions presented their "Play Your Cards Right" game and with over 200 children taking part, seven managed to beat the odds to win a box of chocolates. Some of the parents paid £1 to play the same game and of course, there were NO winners - except the Lions, who raised around £75 from the proceedings for charity! Each year. Lions clubs across the south unite to provide a fun day out for disadvantaged kids at Paulton's Park. We donated 105 discounted family tickets at £11 each, to Meon Valley families nominated via Home Start, the Rainbow Centre, Young Carers and Family Support Services. Lions Sue, Eddy and Hilary were in attendance to ensure everything went well, although Sue declined to wear the fluffy Lion suit this year, on account of the high temperatures! Some families had five children attending, others only one, children under one metre in height went in free of charge, as did those in wheelchairs, therefore, our 105 tickets probably benefited around 200 recipients. The Lions love to support this sort of activity because it isn't simply about helping out individuals with a cash handout - it's more about putting a smile back on somebody's face. One of the organisations we support in the local area is the Rainbow Centre in Fareham. The Centre relies heavily on donations to deliver its Conductive Education programmes for children and adults, from all over Hampshire. The special programmes encourage children and adults to improve mobility and movement in the face of disability caused by cerebral palsy, adult-stroke, brain injury, Parkinson's disease or similar. The Lions once again volunteered to deliver the barbeque catering at the Centre's annual Fun-Day event, selling hundreds of sausages and burgers. The £1,000 raised will go specifically to the Rainbow Centre's "Helping Hand" Fund which is there to help participants of all ages to access services they otherwise couldn't afford.

Above - Newly built houses In Station Road, looking remarkably as they do today. The Tudor style houses were the first to be built (pre 1905,) in what was then Stokes Lane to take advantage of the nearby railway station. The Station Road inhabitants tended to turn to Droxford for their daily needs and indeed up to the advent of postcodes, some residents still gave their address as Station Road, Droxford.(Postcard courtesy of M Wingham) Below - This map is from the 1892-1905 series showing the same area. It appears that the row of houses was completed before the adjacent stretch of railway line.(Map courtesy of The National Library of Scotland)
