Overdrive Digital Books on Apple Devices

Pierce County Library System provides a collection of and digital audiobooks through Overdrive: a dis- tributor of digital books to libraries. These instructions will get you started reading and listening to library books on your Apple device.

 Overdrive offers three formats that are compatible with Apple devices; EPUB, Kindle and Overdrive Read. EPUB books must be read in the Overdrive Media Console app, Kindle books will only work in the Kindle app and Read books will open in a web browser such as Safari or Chrome.

 You can listen to MP3 formatted audiobooks from Overdrive on an iOS Apple device using the Overdrive Media Console app. To listen to MP3 audiobooks on your Mac desktop or laptop (running OS X) you need to download the Overdrive Media Console program at http://www.overdrive.com/software/omc/.

Get the App MP3 audiobooks and EPUB formatted eBooks can be downloaded to your Apple mobile device using the Overdrive Media Console App, available for free from the iTunes store.

 Open the App store on your device.

 Search for “overdrive”.

 Download and install the Overdrive app. You will need your Apple ID information (iTunes email and password).

Add Your Library

 In order to access digital titles available through Pierce County Libraries you need to “add” the library to the Get Books menu in the Overdrive app.

 From the Get Books page, se- lect “Add a Library”.  Search for “Pierce County Library”.  Choose your library from the list.

Checkout and Download

 Your device will open up the Overdrive catalog.

 Tap in the search box to search for a particular author or title.

 To view or edit your Overdrive account details and Bookshelf click on the “Account” icon.

 Tap the “Menu” icon to browse titles in different categories.

 Icons in the upper right hand corner of the cover image identify whether the title is an audiobook or an eBook.

 The same icons indicate if the title is available for checkout right now. If the icon for a title is greyed out you must place your name on the waiting list for that particular .

 Clicking on the grey bookmark, just below a title’s cover image, will add the book to your wish list. Note that adding a book to your wish list will not place the book on hold for you.

 You can limit your search to books that are immedi- ately available for checkout. Click on the orange “Show me only titles with copies available” button to do so.

 Use the filter options on the left side of the page to narrow your results further.

 Tap a cover image to view more information about a book.

 Make note of the formats that a book is available in, listed under “Available formats”.

 Once you have found a book you wish to check out, tap on “Borrow”.

 Enter your library card number and PIN (last 4 digits of your phone number).

 The book will be added to your online Bookshelf.

 Sometimes a title is checked out by another person and not available at this time.

 Click on “Place a Hold”, and submit an email ad- dress to place a hold on that title. You will be noti- fied when the book is available for checkout.

Bookshelf

 On your Account page you can view your Bookshelf, Holds, Lists, and Account Settings.

 The Bookshelf will display all of the books you have currently checked out from Overdrive.

 Click on “Download (Select one Format)” for the title you just checked out.

 Select the format you wish to download from the drop down menu and click on “Confirm & Download”.

 The button will now read, “Download (EPUB)”, tap to download.

 Some titles are also available as “Read” books. See page eight for information on Overdrive Read.

 When you are finished checking out and downloading books, tap the “Bookshelf” button in the upper right hand corner of your screen.

 In the Overdrive app bookshelf, tap the title to start listening/reading!

Return & Delete

 To return or delete a book from your device,

tap the plus sign to the right of the title, and  If you select “Return then Delete” the book will be no select the “Return/Delete” button. longer checked out to you and deleted from your device.

 If you select “Delete Only”, the book will be removed from the device, but it will remain checked out to you.

OverDrive Read

 Some titles are available in the “Read” format. Overdrive Read is an in-browser eBook reader. It works just like any eBook reading app, except you don’t need to activate or install extra software.

 Login to your Overdrive Account -either from the Overdrive app or an internet browser app- on your de- vice.

 From your account Bookshelf, click on “Read” instead of “Download”; the book will open up in your web browser.
