While not part of the original plans for the Binghampton Gateway Center, the Art Garden pro- posed the idea after receiving substantial commu- nity support for the welcome sign, the first for the neighborhood. If there was one organization in Binghampton most likely to propose this project – it’s the Art Garden. Formed in 2012, the nonprofit’s mission is to work with Binghampton youths to increase their exposure to art, educational and vocational pro- gramming. A neighborhood resident, Eddie Johnson, first mentioned the community sign three years ago. Preliminary work began last year with the Shelby Board of Adjustment approving the Art Gar- den’s request in October 2020. The “Welcome to Binghampton” sign is sur- rounded by a black tiled-background with each letter filled in using brightly colored tiles in vari- ous shapes. For instance, the “B” in Binghampton contains orange pieces in circular and square-like shapes throughout the mosaic. The colored tiles used for the sign came from clay being fired into a kiln before it’s glazed as part of the Art Garden’s prep work for the project.
