LAST GAME (Oct. 4) - Minnesota 1 at Colorado 4 The Avalanche used goals from Carl Soderberg and Nathan MacKinnon to overcome an early deficit and added late empty netters from Mikko Rantanen and J.T. Compher to defeat the , 4-1, on opening night at Pepsi Center. The Avs out-shot the Wild 40- 21, which included a 32-13 advantage through two periods. Semyon Varlamov stopped 20-of-21 shots in his 400th NHL game and franchise-record eighth opening night start.

TONIGHT'S GAME The Colorado Avalanche takes on the Philadelphia Flyers tonight at Pepsi Center. The Avs opened the 2018-19 season with a 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night in Denver. The Avs are beginning their season at home for the 10th time in the last 13 years. Despite playing its first two games on home ice, the Avalanche will be on the road for much of the early portion of the season, playing 11 of its first 17, 14 of its first 22 and 19 of its first 30 away from Denver. The Avs hit the road on Monday, traveling to Columbus to face the Blue Jackets on Tuesday and to Buffalo to meet the Sabres on Thursday. Colorado will play 12 games in October, the club’s busiest opening month since 2009-10 (14 games). This marks the Avalanche's 23rd season in Denver and 39th season as a franchise (including 16 years in Quebec).

OPENING NIGHT SUCCESS CONTINUES With Thursday night's 4-1 victory over the Wild, the Avs have now won three straight season openers, their longest streak since moving to Denver. The Avalanche improved to 22-10-7 all-time on opening night (.654), the second-best mark in the NHL behind only Tampa.

BEST RECORDS IN SEASON OPENERS W-L-O PTS% Tampa Bay 16-7-2 .680 Colorado 22-10-7 .654 New Jersey 22-12-9 .616

OPENING NIGHT NOTABLES - The Avs are 3-0-0 in season openers under head coach Jared Bednar. He is the first Avalanche coach to win his first three season openers and joins Michel Bergeron as the only franchise coaches to win their first three opening night tilts. Bergeron won his first six with Quebec from 1981-82 to 1986-87. • Semyon Varlamov stopped 20-of-21 shots in what was his eighth opening night start as a member of the Avalanche, which surpassed Patrick Roy (seven) for the most season-opening starts in franchise history. Varly, who was appearing in his 400th NHL game, has won his last three opening night starts. • Sheldon Dries made his NHL debut. • Nathan MacKinnon tallied the game-winning goal. He shared the NHL lead with 12 game winners last season and was the first NHL player to record 12+ game-winning goals and 12+ power-play tallies in the same season since 2011-12 (Steven Stamkos). • The Avs went 1-for-3 with the man advantage while killing off all three Wild power-play opportunities. Colorado's power play finished eighth in percentage (22.0%) and third in goals (65) last season. The Avalanche's PK unit finished fourth overall (83.3%) and first at home (91.7%), which included setting an NHL record for fewest PPG allowed on home ice (10). • J.T. Compher notched a power-play goal for the Avs. Compher last season was the first rookie in Avalanche history (since 1995-96) to score two or more PPG, SHG and GWG in the same season.

STRONG IN HOME OPENERS The Avalanche franchise improved to 27-8-4 all-time in home openers (.744). Colorado is 15-5-3 in home openers since moving from Quebec, which includes a 13-4-2 mark at Pepsi Center. Only Minnesota (.853; 13-1-3 in 17 GP) has a higher points percentage among all NHL teams in home openers.

HOME, SWEET HOME After Thursday night's victory, the Avs are now 19-4-1 in their last 24 regular-season games at Pepsi Center. Colorado finished 28-11-2 on home ice last season, tying its franchise record for the most home victories set by the 2000-01 Stanley Cup championship team. Nathan MacKinnon, who scored the game winner in Thursday's victory, was the NHL’s leading scorer at home last season with 67 points (27g/40a) in 39 contests, tying the Avalanche record for home points set by Sakic in 2000-01. It was the most points by an NHL player in his own building since 2011-12 (Evgeni Malkin, 67).

AVS & FLYERS Tonight is the first of two meetings between the Avalanche and Flyers in 2018-19, both of which will come this month. The Avs will make their lone trip to the City of Brotherly Love on Oct. 22. The Avs finished 1-1-0 against the Flyers last season, 0-1 at home.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

The Flyers are now 24-19-8 all-time in the opening game of a season after Thursday’s win and have won three season openers in a row, with at least a point in four straight. This is the third consecutive year the Flyers have gone on the road and won the season opener in a Pacific Division city.

Thursday also marked the fifth time in the span of eight seasons that the Flyers are playing against a team raising either a conference or Stanley Cup championship banner prior to the game. The previous four occasions are as follows,

2017-18 at NSH (Conference banner) Result: 6-5 L

2015-16 at TBL (Conference banner) Result: 3-2 OTL

2012-13 at NJD (Conference banner) Result: 3-0 L

2011-12 at BOS (Stanley Cup banner) Result: 2-1 W

Claude Giroux enters his seventh season as the captain of the Flyers, joining Bobby Clarke as the only players to captain the club in seven or more campaigns. Giroux is coming off a career year of 34 goals and 68 assists for 102 points, which put him second in the league in scoring. Giroux’s next assist will give him sole possession of third all-time in franchise history, and he starts the year 21 points away from fourth all-time on the team’s scoring list.

Joining Giroux in having career-best seasons last year were Jake Voracek (20-65-85) and Sean Couturier (31-45-76). Voracek recorded two assists Thursday, the second of which was the 400th of his career; he picked up right where he left off last season when he concluded the year with a four-game point streak. Couturier is slated to appear in his 400th career game tonight.

James van Riemsdyk returned to the Flyers as a free agent in July. van Riemsdyk was originally selected by the Flyers in the first round (2nd overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft and appeared in 196 games from 2009-12 before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, where he spent the last six seasons. van Riemsdyk is coming off a career-high 36-goal season with the Leafs, and averaged more than 3.7 goals every ten games during his 413-game Toronto career.

Shayne Gostisbehere had 13 goals and 52 assists for 65 points last year, which was the highest-scoring season by a Flyers defenseman since Garry Galley had 70 in 1993-94. Gostisbehere’s 52 assists are the third-highest single season total by a defenseman in franchise history, behind only Mark Howe’s 58 in 1985-86 and Galley’s 60 in that 1993-94 campaign.

Mikhail Vorobyev made his NHL debut Thursday night and also recorded his first NHL point with an assist. Vorobyev posted two goals and five assists for seven points during training camp. Vorobyev appeared in seven of the eight games – the only Flyer to do so – and led the team in assists and points. Vorobyev played his first season in North America last year with the Flyers’ American Hockey League affiliate, the , where he had nine goals and 20 assists in 58 games. The year prior, Vorobyev had 10 assists in seven games for Russia at the World Junior Championships. Vorobyev was selected by the Flyers in the fourth round (104th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He would become the third Flyer from that draft to play for the club, joining Ivan Provorov and Travis Konecny.

Oskar Lindblom scored the Flyers’ first goal of the season on Thursday. He made the opening night roster after making his NHL debut last year, when he appeared in 23 games and posted two goals and four assists for six points. Lindblom was selected by the Flyers in the fifth round (138th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
