5 SOMETHING NEW FOR THE OVER 50’S
WALKING FOOTBALL Local people can now benefit from the opportunity to enjoy ‘Walking Football’ at a number of venues, Fleming Park Leisure Centre, Eastleigh Football Club and The Hub at Bishopstoke,
Walking football is a new and exciting version of the game and its popularity is growing at an amazing rate within Hampshire and across the country.
What is it? Targeted at over 50’s, walking football is a 5 a-side version of the game, with no running or slide tackling. These rule modifications help reduce strain on joints and reduce the risk of injury - providing players the chance to get back playing the game they love when they thought their playing days were over!
The sessions at Fleming Park Leisure Centre take place each Tuesday at 11am-12.30pm. The sessions at Eastleigh Football Club, at 11am-12.30pm each Thursday. The cost for each session is just £3.
The Hub at Bishopstoke Recreation Ground now offers Walking Football at a time accessible to those still in full-time work as it takes place on Sundays from 3pm – 4.30pm.
If you would like to attend any session, please register your interest by emailing [email protected]
Sessions are also available on Thursday Evenings 18:45 - 20:00 at Wyvern College, Fair Oak.
Please register your interest to Jon Mann: [email protected] or website www.stokeparkrangersfc.co.uk :-

6 V P COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
VPCA MEMBERSHIP REMINDER A reminder to all residents and local groups that Membership starts on the 1st January and expires on 31st December.

Members benefits from:- · Concessionary rates to hire facilities at the Community Centre. · Concessionary rates for Photocopying at the Centre Office. · Low cost advertising on the Classified Page of the Voice.

8 FRIENDS OF THE PARKS NEWS
Friends of The Parks first task of 2015 was a return to a Zionshill Copse West for the fifth year running to continue thinning Holly. Efforts were again focused where the Holly had closed in over the footpath. Hopefully opening up the footpath to light would assist it to dry out quicker. We also cleared “halos” around the base of Oak trees to give then a bit of space and let some light in. A lot of preparation ensured that we soon had a roaring fire going which consumed the Holly as quickly as it could be cut and dragged to feed the fire. Baked potatoes were put onto the fire in an old ammo box and the inferno meant they were ready in half an hour. Emma again did the honours with the homemade coleslaw, along with cheese and beans it was just reward for the workers!
Thanks also to Janet for bringing a tub of Quality Street. Any hopes we had of working off some of the Christmas excesses soon disappearing!
After lunch we finished loading up the fire and let it do its work. This still took a further hour or so before it was deemed in a state suitable to walk away from.
On Sunday 8th of February we will be thinning the planting behind the hedge laying, opposite Brendoncare. Selective thinning will enable the better trees to mature stronger rather than have to struggle for light and space.
Meet opposite Brendoncare on Knightwood Road at 10.00am.
Our March task will be coppicing in Zionshill on Sunday 15th
All are welcome to attend the above events at which all tools, gloves, training and refreshments will be provided.

11 VALLEY PARK PARISH COUNCIL
The Valley Park Parish Council meetings are usually held on the 2nd Monday of every month (except August and January) at the Knightwood Leisure Centre at 7.30pm. The next is on Monday 9th February 2015.
The Clerk is Mr Andrew Purr; if you wish to contact him then please email if possible. Email ~ [email protected] If your enquiry is more urgent, day-time telephone number 80 695277. You can also write to him at 6 West Horton Lane, Eastleigh, SO50 8LR
The Parish Council have a web site which contains details of the councils work, minutes of meetings and a full list of the councillors and their contact details. Visit www.valleyparkparish.org
Extracts from the November meeting:- Litter/Dog Bins Councillor Mrs Tilling reported that she had been out in Valley Park with the TVBC Environmental Services Manager assessing whether the current litter/dog bin provision was satisfactory. It was determined that at least an additional five bins were required. However, the Parish Council would need to provide the bins and pay for the ongoing maintenance costs including emptying them. The capital cost of the bins could be funded by the Borough Councillors grant provided the other 50% could be funded by the Parish Council. The Parish Council was in agreement to this but not to the ongoing revenue costs. The Parish Council considered TVBC had a duty to provide a collection service and asked the Clerk to write to TVBC on that basis.
SHROVE TUESDAY (Pancake Day) 17th February
Shrove Tuesday - also known as Pancake Day - is the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. It is celebrated throughout the UK by the cooking and eating of pancakes - a last feast before the fasting and self- denial of Lent. In some places pancake races are held, where participants run along tossing a pancake as they go.
Another name for Shrove Tuesday is Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras, so called because of the tradition of eating rich food before fasting for Lent. The famous New Orleans Mardi Gras is celebrated on this day

13 POLICE ADVICE
Dear Resident You may be aware that there has recently been a car key burglary in your area. The purpose of this newsletter is not to frighten you but to raise your awareness and ask you to be extra vigilant. Car keys have been stolen by gaining access to a home through unsecure windows and doors and removing car keys from the property. The car has then been stolen or taken at a later date. There are certain measures you can take to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim yourself, such as: • Make sure you double lock the door, as well as engaging the multi-locking system. • Don’t leave keys in doors – remove them and keep them close at hand but out of sight where you can easily find them in an emergency. • Don’t leave your house unattended with windows and doors open and unlocked – even for just a minute. • Install a burglar alarm, ensuring sure the alarm box is clearly visible. • Mark valuable items in your home with a UV marker, SmartWater or similar marking kit. • Take car keys and other valuables upstairs or into your bedroom at night.
Report suspicious activity to the police on 101 or anonymously via the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
For further advice please contact your local Safer Neighbourhoods team using the details below or visit www.hampshire.police.uk and type in your postcode to find your local policing pages.
14 FROM YOUR LOCAL VET
Lost without it!
Whilst collars and tags can become snagged and easily lost, the good news is that microchipping is a permanent method of identifying your cat, dog or other pets. A microchip is hardly bigger than a grain of rice and just takes a few seconds to implant. Like a normal injection it is inserted under the skin at the back of the neck and once there, lasts a lifetime.
Each microchip contains a unique code, which – together with your pet’s details and address, are stored on a central database. Veterinary practices, the police and welfare organisations all have special scanners and will routinely scan stray pets – looking for a microchip.
Do also remember that if you change your contact details, to update the database!
Microchipping of dogs (but not cats) is already compulsory by law in Northern Ireland and will become mandatory in Wales on 1st March 2015 and England on 6th April 2016. There are no plans finalised for Scotland at this time.
So if you have not already done so, now is the time to get your pets microchipped!
If you would like to make an appointment or would like more information, please contact us on 023 8026 8001.
15 KNIGHTWOOD PRIMARY SCHOOL
AUTUMN TERM NEWS
Valley Park in Bloom! Our children are so lucky to learn in a school community surrounded by trees and woodland, especially this time of year when the colours are so beautiful. As a school we work hard to provide opportunities for children to learn through their interaction with the outdoors. Every year we meet up with our friends at St. Francis and plant bulbs in the locality. This year, two of our children went along to Longparish Village Hall to collect a certificate on behalf of the Valley Park Community for winning Test Valley in Bloom. We are proud to have contributed to this as a school.
Top 10 Runners at Cross Country!
Knightwood Key Stage 2 children were invited to take part in the local cross country tournament at Fleming Park. We had a small group of children taking part, but those who did come along did us proud. All of the children finished the course with smiling faces on a very wet afternoon! Many congratulations to all! As usual, there were 4 races. A 3/4 girls, a 3/4 boys, a 5/6 girls and a 5/6 boys. Each race will have had at least 100 children running.
Excellent top 10 finishes as follows.....
Year 3/4 boys race - 2nd and 3rd place Year 5/6 girls race - 6th and 7th place Year 5/6 boys race - 5th place!
16 KNIGHTWOOD PRIMARY SCHOOL
Football Success! Our Year 6 girls and boys football teams competed in a national 7-a- side football tournament recently.
They represented the school with enthusiasm and energy!! The girls competed well in the group stages but did not progress to the play offs.
The boys reached the semi finals and were knocked out on penalties. Well done all of the children who took part and represented our school so well.
Farm on the Field The farm came to visit our school the other day and year 1 had a lovely time finding out about all the animals. There were sheep, turkeys, ducks, goats, pigs, donkeys and lots of other farmyard animals. The children are learning all about the farm so all of this learning will certainly come in handy in the classroom over the next few weeks! Great fun!
Harvest Assembly! We had a special Harvest Assembly. The www.knightwood. children brought in lots of tins, groceries and hants.sch.uk produce and we made a display in the hall.
We donated the items to Eastleigh Basics Mr P.Haydon Bank who came and joined us for a special assembly. Headteacher
17 VALLEY PARK WOODLANDS
WOODLANDS OF VALLEY PARK (repeat from May 2014) Valley Park is a mixture of residential housing and long established woodlands with some remnants going back to ancient times. The Valley Park Voice in different articles frequently mentions these woodlands by name but not every resident is familiar with their location within our area.
To try and help in this matter the map on the opposite page is published this month. This map was originally produced by local artist Ian Searle in full colour for the Friends of the Parks welcome to Valley Park leaflet. With the VP Voice only being a black and white magazine the contrast on the map is not as clear as it would be liked.
The names of the woodlands within our area are Zionshill Copse, Badgers Copse, Tredgoulds Copse, Skys Wood, Clothiers Copse, Knightwood, Small Profits Wood, Titlark and Little Covert.
Just outside our boundary are Lower Flexford, Ramalley Copse and Great Covert.
The dark lines on the map are the footpaths through the woodlands; a few are public rights of way but most are just permissive footpaths for the public to use.
