  • The New Album from Flogging Molly to Be Released by Borstal Beat Records on May 31
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MARCH 2011 SPEED OF DARKNESS - THE NEW ALBUM FROM FLOGGING MOLLY TO BE RELEASED BY BORSTAL BEAT RECORDS ON MAY 31. WRITTEN IN DETROIT – ALBUM IS A 'CALL TO ACTION' INSPIRED BY COLLAPSE OF THE US ECONOMY AND THE RESILIENCE OF MANKIND Nashville, TN – Speed of Darkness, the new album from celebrated Celtic punk ensemble Flogging Molly, is set for a May 31st release on the group’s newly founded Borstal Beat Records. Speed of Darkness is Flogging Molly’s fifth, and arguably most important album. In the words of lead singer and songwriter Dave King, “It wasn’t the album we set out to write. It became the album we had to write.” Speed of Darkness was written in Detroit, MI and takes a hardnosed look at the economic collapse in the US: the causes and the direct effect it has had on everyday people. The Motor City serves as the album’s muse and one of the biggest examples of what has gone wrong. While Speed of Darkness attacks much of the greed and ignorance responsible for where we are, the album also delivers a message of hope, humanity and the resilience of mankind. It reminds us how we grow stronger when faced with adversity and how we bond together and become more involved. Speed of Darkness features Flogging Molly’s own blend of rock, folk, punk, blues and traditional Irish music with King’s populist poetry. The title track explodes with an intense rush of pure adrenaline and passion. The same can be said of “The Power’s Out”, “Oliver Boy” and “Don’t Shut ‘Em Down”, while “So Sail On” and “The Cradle of Humankind” cut straight to the heart with their gorgeous melodies and poignant messages.

  • FLOGGING MOLLY Speed of Darkness
FLOGGING MOLLY Speed of Darkness THE LIGHTS HAVE GONE OUT ON THE WORKING CLASS Three years ago, hard working men and women the world over were collectively under the assumption that their nest eggs were secure, their homes were the safest of all investments, and that the economy was on the upswing. Then, with virtually no warning, their lives were turned upside down, as an entire generation saw their dreams dashed and plans dismantled. It all happened with the Speed of Darkness. The creation of Flogging Molly's new record, Speed of Darkness, was anything but business as usual for the band. “It wasn’t the album we set out to write,” vocalist/guitarist Dave King says. “It became the album we had to write.” Musically and lyrically, Flogging Molly has never sounded so mature or rousing, nor have the messages of alienation and hope behind their songs ever been so relevant. Speed of Darkness was written over several months when the band would descend into the basement of King’s Detroit home—a home he shares with his wife, Flogging Molly fiddler, Bridget Regan (they maintain dual residences in Ireland and Detroit, where Bridget was born and raised). As the country struggled to stay afloat, the songs evolved into odes to the working man and battle cries against the elite establishment that so quickly and callously cast him aside. “I write from my surroundings,” King says. “I wanted people who’ve lost their jobs to know I was paying attention. We’re singing for them, all of these good people brought to their knees.” Nowhere is this more apparent than on the charging and bluesy track “The Power’s Out.” (“The power’s out, there’s fuck all to see/The power’s out, like this economy/The power’s out, guess it’s par for the course/Unless you’re a bloodsucking leech CEO”).

  • 2012 Sundance Film Festival Announces Films in Competition
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contacts: November 30, 2011 Sarah Eaton 310.360.1981 [email protected] Casey De La Rosa 310.360.1981 [email protected] 2012 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES FILMS IN COMPETITION Park City, UT — Sundance Institute announced today the films selected for the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. The Sundance Film Festival will take place January 19 through 29 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah. The complete list of films is available at www.sundance.org/festival. Robert Redford, Founder and President of Sundance Institute remarked, “We are, and always have been, a festival about the filmmakers. So what are they doing? What are they saying? They are making statements about the changing world we are living in. Some are straight-forward, some novel and some offbeat but always interesting. One can never predict. We know only at the end, and I love that.” John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “In these challenging economic times, filmmakers have had to be more resourceful and truly independent in their approaches to filmmaking. Looking at this year’s submissions, the result is more fully realized visions and stronger stories; we are proud to see the Festival emerging as a key indicator of the health and creativity of our filmmaking community. The overall quality of the films in the 2012 Competition section will make for an exciting Festival and a remarkable year ahead for independent film audiences everywhere.” For the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, 110 feature-length films were selected, representing 31 countries and 44 first-time filmmakers, including 24 in competition.

  • Writer-Director Richard Dutcher, Unquestionably the Dominant Personality in the Past Decade of Mormon Cinema, on Location with A
Writer-director Richard Dutcher, unquestionably the dominant personality in the past decade of Mormon cinema, on location with actors Jo-Sei Ikeda and Ignacio Serricchio for his film States of Grace (2005). Dutcher—who has worked as writer, actor, producer, director, and now editor—is credited with launching a new wave of Mormon film with his breakthrough production God’s Army in 2000, which not only set the stage for multiple theatrical releases of Mormon-themed pictures, but also sought to increase their realism and dramatic depth beyond the limited depic- tions of Mormons in Hollywood films or, conversely, institutional productions in the style of Judge Whitaker. © Main Street Movie Co. A History of Mormon Cinema: Fifth Wave V 127 The Fifth Wave: Cultural and Commercial Viability (2000–Present) The Fifth Wave of Mormon cinema is the current period, in which a culturally robust and commercially vibrant new art form is beginning to emerge. Its most obvious manifestation is in the stream of Mormon- themed theatrical feature films, produced independently of the Church, made by and for Latter-day Saints. Richard Dutcher’s much-celebrated God’s Army, released in March 2000, made him widely recognized as the father of this new movement in Mormon film, but his groundbreaking work actually marks a return to the past. The LDS filmmakers of the First Wave also sought to create 35mm films to be distributed through commer- cial theaters to a paying public. Mormon film has in many ways come full circle, with Latter-day Saints of the Fifth Wave attempting large theatrical productions at a time when anti-Mormon films are once again more vis- ible in the mainstream.
