Hydrocoat helps Mother Nature keep her air and water fresh and clean and that makes her very happy. Solvent-based antifoulings contain a higher level of VOC’s, which makes Mother Nature very unhappy. Hydrocoat has fewer VOC’s, no foul smell and clean-up is simple with soap and water. Yet with all this green going for it, Hydrocoat is a very effective antifouling and is as good as the best solvent-based bottom paints. So stop using old technology. THE FIGURE 8 VOYAGE – THE CHALLENGE Hosted by Randall Reeves In the fall of 2017, lone sailor, Randall Reeves, will depart San Francisco for a first-ever circumnavigation of both the American and Antarctic continents in one season. The route will pass through all the world’s oceans, approach both poles, and round Cape Horn twice. The Figure 8 expedition vessel is a 45-foot, flush-deck aluminum sloop. Built in 1989 for German adventurer Clark Stede, she was the first yacht to circumnavigate the Americas in 1993. In 2002 and skippered by Tony Gooch, she was the first yacht to circumnavigate the globe non-stop via the Southern Ocean from a starting point in North America. Randall’s Figure 8 combines these two routes into one epic voyage. See the vessel, climb aboard, and meet Randall at the in-water display or at his seminars. Understanding and Troubleshooting Boat Electrical Systems Nigel Calder

Location: Craneway Pavilion Seminar Center Date: Friday, April 7 Time: 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. (Arrive at 8:45) Cost: $139/person; $249/couple

The number one source of problems on boats large enough to have an electrical system, both power and sail, lies in these electrical systems. Tech guru Nigel Calder, author of the best-selling Boatowner’s Mechanical and Electrical Manual (now in its 4th edition, with over 300,000 copies sold) takes participants through the core design and installation requirements necessary to head off electrical systems problems, and then delves into step-by-step troubleshooting techniques, including using a multimeter, that will rapidly identify most problems should they arise. Not only will you leave class with a far better understanding of your NIGEL CALDER electrical systems and knowing how to fix common problems, but you will also likely save the price of admission by not having to make service calls or swap out perfectly good parts in search of solutions. No previous experience is required.

Location: Craneway Pavilion Seminar Center Date: Saturday, April 8 Time: 11:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (Arrive at 10:45) Cost: $45/person (includes same-day entrance to the show)

The “FUN Race to Hawaii” runs every even year from San Francisco to Hawaii. Started in 1980, the race has been enjoyed by thousands of racers sailing well over a million miles in total. The 2018 Pacific Cup will start the week of July 9, 2018, and invites well-prepared boats to race to the warm, welcoming shores of Kaneohe Bay, Oahu.

Unique amongst the major distance ocean races, in the run up to the start, participants attend a series of five seminars called the Pacific Offshore Academy (POA). Seminar topics include how to configure and optimize your boat for the race to Hawaii, weather forecasting and navigation, crew selection and training, medical emergency training, provisioning, and a host of other topics designed to prepare the racers for their trip to Hawaii. Each seminar includes a lineup of top ocean sailing experts, from seasoned offshore professionals to electronics and navigation gurus, and veteran amateur racers who can make the material accessible to first timers.

The seminar series is designed for skippers and crew of boats either registered for Pac Cup 2018 or seriously considering entry. The Pacific Cup is excited to hold the first seminar of its POA series in the run up to Pac Cup 2018 at the Pacific Sail & Power Boat Show. The seminar will end at 4:00 p.m., giving participants a chance to also attend the boat show and enjoy the hospitality of hosted parties that night.

Marine Diesel Engines: Maintenance and Troubleshooting Nigel Calder

Location: Craneway Pavilion Seminar Center Date: Sunday, April 9 Time: 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. (Arrive at 8:45) Cost: $139/person, $249/couple

The diesel engine is a critically important piece of safety equipment aboard any cruising boat. Tech guru Nigel Calder, au- thor of the best-selling Marine Diesel Engines (now in its 3rd edition, and used as a text book in numerous diesel classes), brings his unique brand of humor to a seminar for boatowners, both power and sail, that want to get the most out of their time on the water. Distinguishing between contemporary and older diesels, Calder takes a careful look at fuel, oil, cooling, airflow and powertrain systems, describing in detail all normal maintenance procedures together with basic troubleshoot- ing techniques for common diesel engine problems – defining what the untrained boatowner can reasonably be expected to do and what should not be attempted. You will come away from this seminar with an enhanced understanding of your engine and the confidence to carry out routine maintenance, which alone will save you the price of admission. No previous experience is required.

The final seminar schedule can be found at www.pacificboatshow.com

Randall Reeves Randall grew up reading about and dreaming of the sea. He learned to sail on the rivers of central California and interviewed world-famous solo sailor, Bernard Moitessier, for his college radio station, an event that changed his life. Randall’s blue-water sailing began in 2006 when he crewed on a 40-foot boat for a 26-day, 3,000 mile passage from Hawaii to British Columbia where “everything went gloriously wrong.” He was hooked. In 2010, Randall departed San Francisco for a two-year, 12,000-mile solo loop of the Pacific in a 30-foot sailboat. Randall crewed the Northwest Passage in 2014, a grueling 65 days over an ice-strewn 5,000-mile course aboard one of only seven boats to complete the Arctic run that year. Randall’s preparations in 2016 have included long pas- sages aboard his new Figure 8 boat from Kodiak, Alaska to Hawaii and back to his home in San Francisco, a total of 7,000 miles. Randall is a licensed master of vessels to 50 gross tons.
