During his early research into the bouncing bomb, Barnes Wallis visited the site and met with Dr Norman Davey, Head of Engineering at BRE, and planned to build a replica model of the Mohne Dam. The model was crucial in the planning and strategy of the raid, known as Operation Chastise, and contributed to one of the most famous success stories of the Second World War.
