POST GRADUATE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY, KHALLIKOTE AUTONOMOUS COLLEGE, , GANJAM,

Brief History: Khallikote Autonomous College, Berhampur, Odisha is a century old institution with its continuing glory and is lively structure of the city. As citadel of learning the institution stands as a beacon of knowledge and wisdom in the southern part of the State, spreading its tentacles around the globe having its live presence all over the country.

The institution started to operate in the year 1878. Beginning with F.A classes, science classes at the under graduate level were introduced in the year 1944, with 32 seats in Chemistry Honours course. Post Graduate teaching in Chemistry started in the year 1963 with sixteen seats.

Teaching of Chemistry and Chemical research never went off from the hand in glove since its inception of the Post Graduate Department. The legacy of chemical research has been carried forward, starting with the torch bearer Professor Dr. P.S.R.Murty; Dr. N.S Chickerur, Dr. Prabhu Prasad Mahapatra, Dr. R. C. Acharya, Professor Dr. M.D.P. Rao, Dr. Akhil.K.Panigrahi, Dr. R.S Panda, Dr. Panchanan Gauda and others. More than sixty scholars have been awarded with Ph.D. Degrees for their outstanding research work in Chemistry in the Department. Several hundreds of research papers have been published in the Journals of National and International repute. A good number of graduate and post-graduates from this department have earned laurels in the field of chemistry and in the society for the quality training.

Seminar Activities: Weekly Seminar meetings are being held regularly. The students of Post-Graduate and Degree Honours classes present papers on topics relating to their curriculum. The articles presented are documented as a bulletin (Chiral) annually in the department. Students are awarded for best seminar paper presentation.

 A UGC sponsored national seminar on Modern Chemical Approaches on Organic Synthesis, Drug Design & Development (UNSMCAOSD-2014) was organized during November 08-09, 2014 at P.G. Dept. of Chemistry, Khallikote Autonomous College, Berhampur-760001, Odisha where 01 keynote speech, 10 invited talks and 57 contributed articles in total were presented by more than 200 participants.

 A UGC assisted seminar was conducted on 26-02-2015 where Prof.(Dr.) Debendra Ku. Sahu presented a talk on Research & Development Activities in India on The Progress of Clean Fertilizer Industry.  Dr. Sunasira Misra, Assistant Professor in Chemistry delivered a talk in the seminar for the PG & UG students in presence of all the staff members of Chemistry department with topic entitled “Nanotechnology Enabled Gas Sensors for Environmental Monitoring” on 27th August 2015 at 02.00 PM.

 During the academic session 2015-2016 twenty eight seminars were organized by the PG students.

 A one-day UGC sponsored inter departmental seminar was held on 27th Feb. 2016 on “Recent Developments in Chemistry”. The deliberations of two invited resource persons Dr. Akhil Krishna Panigrahy, Ex-Director, Text Book Bureau, Odisha & Retd. Reader in Chemistry and Sri Lalit Ranjan Das, Deputy General Manager, Quality Control R & D Titanium Products Pvt. Ltd. ( An Indo-Russian Joint Venture Company) enrich the conference academically. Dr. Panigrahy delivered his talk on Stereo Chemistry and Conformational Analysis using spring-ball models while Sri Das presented his talk on Polyester, Rare earth metals & its applications, Semiconducting Materials used in electronic gadgets, their recycling & disposal.

 An invited seminar talk was held by Dr. Bishnu Prasad Kar, Lecturer in Chemistry, Govt. Science College, Chatrapur on the topic “Matrix Isolation of IR Spectroscopy – A Method to Study the Structures of Different Molecular Species” on 10th Feb. 2016, by Dr. Radhakrishna Ratha, Guest Faculty of this department on 09-11-2018 and an extra mural lecture by Dr. Golak Chandra Maikap for career counselling on 09-03-2019 respectively.

Details of Research Publications: The Department has a consistent and glorious record in the arena of teaching and research in Chemistry at the National and International levels pioneered by the founders. More than fifty Ph.D. scholars, hundreds of quality research publications during its journey of taking the Chemical Sciences to more heights strengthening National economy for half a century have been acknowledged. Demonstrators of this department too have contributed in adding to the glory of the department in teaching and research in Chemistry. Research papers of Dr. N.K Rath and contributions to Chemical Research and Industry by Dr. Chakrapani Patnaik of the department needs special mention.

 At present researchers Sakuntala Jena, Sasmita Samal, Bibhu Prasad Sahu, Sisir Kumar Praharaj, Basudev Nayak, A.K.Misra, Manoj Kumar Dandapat and B.Basanta Reddy are working in the department under the guidance of Dr.R.S.Panda, Dr. S.R.Mishra, both Ex-readers of the department, Dr.Panchanan Gouda, Reader and H.O.D at present and Dr. Chakrapani Patnaik, Demonstrator.

 Contributions from Dr.Panchanan Gouda, Associate Professor and H.O.D.; Dr. Ellarani Pattanaik, Associate Professor; Dr. Sunasira Misra, Smt. Girija Nandini Hota and Dr. Sasmita Baliarsingh as Assistant Professors are significant towards guidance in the department.

Industrial visit & Study Tour:

 An industrial visit was made for UG & PG students to Sugar factory, Aska on 17-01-2015.  A study tour cum picnic was arranged at Ugratara and the bottling plant near Khurda on 17-01-2016.  Study Tour to Jayashree Chemicals, Ganjam, 2017.  An industrial visit was made for UG & PG students to Sugar factory, Aska on 20-02-2018.

Achievements by Current Students:

1. Ms. Sivani Dash, PG Part-I received Second Prize in the all Odisha state essay competition by Odisha Chemical Society-2015 2. Ms. Sunita Kumari Panda, +3 III year Hons. participated in the Senior national Ball Badminton Championship-2016 held at Pavilion ground, Khammam, Telangana during 10-01-2016 to 14-01-2016 & Achieved 10th Place national level; She represented Odisha in Woman Handball competition in Tiruvanantapuram, Kerala 3.  Dr. Sunasira Misra is currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Post Graduate Department of Chemistry at Khallikote Autonomous College, Khallikote University, Berhampur, Odisha from June 2014 onwards. Prior to this, he was an Assistant Professor at C.V. Raman College of Engineering, Bhubaneswar, Odisha from March 2010 to June 2014.

 He received his Ph.D. (in Chemistry) degree from University of Madras, India in January 2011 under the supervision of Prof. (Dr.) T. Gnanasekaran, Former Scientist & Associate Director, CG,IGCAR, Kalpakkam, DAE.

 Dr. Misra was working as a research fellow at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, Dept. of Atomic Energy (DAE) India during the period of Nov. 2003 - Feb. 2010. His Doctoral work comprises the identification of suitable substituted perovskite formulations and their use in the development of conductivity based percentage level risk oxygen sensors. He is also involved in the development of nanomaterials and its thin films for trace level sensing of ammonia and petroleum gas in ambient. He has acquired interdisciplinary research aptitude in advanced functional materials. His research interest is on Materials investigations for electrical conductivity measurement and gas sensor applications.

 He obtained his Masters (M.Sc.) degree in Chemistry from Khallikote College (Autonomous), Berhampur University, Orissa, India in 2002 and B.Sc. degree from the same university in 2000 with an excellent academic career (first class throughout).

 Dr. Misra has got around 11 international publications in peer reviewed journals, one international book in LAP, Germany and more than 50 conference research papers of national and international repute to his credit.

 He has contributed significantly for a technological development of electrochemical oxygen sensors for the risk oxygen monitoring of on-board oxygen generating system continuously in Indian Light Combat Aircrafts (TEJAS) flying above 30,000 ft. altitude, which is an essential safety system for pilot life support.

(F) Technological development work involved in device fabrication Dr. Sunasira Misra contributed for technological development of electrochemical oxygen sensors (working in potentiometric mode using yttria stabilized zirconia as solid-electrolyte) for the risk oxygen monitoring of on-board oxygen generating system continuously in Light Combat Aircrafts (TEJAS) flying above 30,000 ft. altitude, which is an essential safety system for pilot life support.

He had worked in a team at Chemistry Group (IGCAR), Kalpakkam for fabrication of such oxygen sensors, which were successfully tested and delivered to Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Bangalore.
