This makes the time I spend on producing it well worthwhile. I am so glad it is of benefit to everyone. I personally have had the occasion to use a couple of the tradesmen recently and have been very happy with their work. With my other hat on, I am very pleased to report that Kingsdown Village Hall has been awarded the ACRE Level “Two” Hallmark. This means it measures up to all the requirements covering Health, Safety & Hygiene. A tremendous amount of work (not very noticeable) has been going on behind the scenes to bring the Hall up to required standards. The security lighting and a Community Notice board is going to be installed in the forecourt soon and the next stage of improvement planned includes replacing the lighting and decorating in the Hall. This will make a huge difference. Ed.

ST JOHN‟S HERITAGE ASSOCIATION This has been set up to try to ensure that YOUR local church is here for generations to come and in the meantime is used for a wide range of community activities in addition to its fundamen- tal purpose of spreading God‟s word. However, to achieve this aim we need to repair and improve the fabric of the building as well as making it more suitable for community activities. This is where YOU come in as the Association needs members and donations. 6 Dear Friends Christ is risen! Alleluia! From Good Friday to Easter Sunday, we travel alongside Jesus‟ followers some 2000 years ago, moving from a feeling of despair and desolation to one of great joy and jubilation when we once again hear the words: “He is not here. He has risen”, words which were to change not only the lives of those who first went to the tomb to anoint Jesus‟ body, but the very course of history. For here is the message which turns our human expectations upside down, ringing laughter out of tears and victory out of defeat. Christ is risen! What looked like a certain end turned out instead to be a new beginning, holding a promise not just for one but for all; and across the centuries countless people have experienced the full wonder of that promise for themselves. Even as Christ hung on the cross, dying, listening to the sneers and shouts of his enemies as they watched him writhing there in agony, he said: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing”. And so, in the most appalling suffering, Jesus thinks not simply of others, but also of those who have brought such suffering upon him. In that moment, He looked his killers in the eye and sought God‟s forgiveness for them – truly amazing! That is the person we honour and praise and the God we meet through Christ; the God who gives, and goes on giving; who loves, and goes on loving; who died, and rose again for each and every one of us. So at this time, let us open our hearts again to what God is able to do in our lives through Christ crucified and risen, until that day when each and every one of us has responded to his grace and been gathered into his kingdom. Mike Quintin has been Editor of INPUT – the Sandwich Deanery newsletter - for some 28 years, and has now decided the time has come to retire. It was in May 1985 that Mike started the quarterly deanery newsletter INPUT, with the prime purpose of trying to provide (in a not-too-serious style) an ongoing compendium of what was happening in the parishes of our deanery – to record highlights, to share successes (and failures), and to challenge readers to new projects and ideas. The newsletter has proved to be an extremely useful magazine to relay relevant diocesan news and events, and disseminate any news about the deanery as a whole. He has done a fantastic job, distributing some 350 copies of the newsletter, ensuring that every synod member and member of the retired clergy received a personal copy, as well as parish-magazine editors and certain officers in a neighbouring deanery and Diocesan House. In addition, bulk supplies were delivered to each parish, for distribution to PCC members – and any surplus for display in the local church. So Mike, we would just like to say “thank you” for your tireless devotion and enthusiasm in producing INPUT for 28 years. You will be a very hard act to follow. Cathy Sigist * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Saddle up for Air Ambulance bike ride Life-saving charity Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance is appealing for cy- clists to join its new-look Double 100 bike ride this summer. The 100-mile or 100km ride on June 23rd will this year start and finish at the Surrey and Sussex helicopter base at Redhill Aerodrome. Both new routes take in all counties covered by the two helicopters and the 100-mile route will pass through Marden in Kent – the home of Kent Air Ambulance. More than 80 riders including Air Ambulance crew members and former patients took part in the inaugural Double 100 from Dunsfold Park , raising £12,000 for the charity. Organisers are aiming for more than 100 entries in this year‟s event, which has kindly been sponsored by Howard Cundey Chartered Surveyors and Estate Agents, Asda, Warburtons and Wellbeing People. Howard Cundey Partner Tim Foulkes said: “With a network of offices based around the counties covered by the Air Ambulance, we are delighted to be the main sponsors of the charity‟s 2013 Double 100. “We look forward to welcoming the weary riders to our Forest Row branch which is going to be a much-needed feeding station on the day.” The Double 100 is open to regular and occasional cyclists with feeding stations along the scenic route. Sporting success has continued at Kingsdown & Ringwould CEP School; the football team convincingly won a recent friendly match against St Richards and our Key Stage two athletics team won the Dover District Multi skills Competition. Jo Hygate At Kingsdown & Ringwould School environment education continues to be a priority for us. As you are aware the school holds a green eco flag and many villagers use the recycling facilities we have on site. The „textile‟ recycling bin is particularly popular and I would also like to thank all the villagers who are currently recycling batteries for us. The School has now been approached by Kent County Council to become involved in another project – recycling electrical items. Tea and Chat in Ripple…Tea and Chat met on March 11th in Ripple Village Hall. In addition to drinking tea and chatting, the meeting enjoyed tackling four sets of quiz questions, with the usual enthusiastic but occasionally wildly hopeful an- swers. PCSO Katie Parker-Brown was also able to join the meeting and talk to members. The next meeting will be held in the Hall on Monday, April 8th and will be a Celebration of Easter with singing and Easter readings.

Vintage bargains at Walmer‟s Bank Holiday Brocante Vintage clothing, furniture, housewares and military and musicial memorabilia are just some of the items that will on sale at Walmer‟s Spring Brocante on Monday, 6 May 2013. The popular annual beachside antiques, collectables and crafts fair, organised by Walmer Parish Council, takes place on Walmer Green alongside the Lifeboat House from 8am to 4pm. With local arts and crafts, including bags, cushions, photo frames, up-cycled furniture, books, and jewellery also on sale, it‟s a great place for finding gifts or bagging a bargain. Young model railway fans will enjoy the large Thomas the Tank Engine train layout exhibited by the Bexley Downs Syndrome Group charity. Valuers from The Canterbury Auction Galleries will be at the bandstand to advise visitors about their collectables. Gold and silver and „quirky‟ or unusual items are currently selling well, according to Michael Roberts, who will be carrying out valuations with his colleague Tony Pratt from 10am to 1pm. One couldn't actually call our March talk entertaining, but it was certainly informative as Paul Sulivan talked about his work as an Independent Funeral Director.Once we had got over our squeamishness about such a subject as planning a funeral, we became intrigued with the personalised services Paul can provide...from a woollen coffin to the releasing of fireworks or even doves, or...the ultimate...sending ashes into space! We have all sorts of events to look forward to, a Theatre visit, a Group meeting in April at St Margaret's when the speaker will be Dean Caston about the History of Victoria Palace, its shows and stars. Our summer outing will be in June to Scotney Castle; let‟s hope Summer will have arrived by then! We congratulated Beryl and John Chidwick on celebrating 60 years of marriage...a fine example to us all! Our next meeting will be our Spring lunch in Ringwould Hall at 12noon, always an event to look forward to! What weather we have experienced recently. Snow, icy cold winds from the north, fog, sunshine and still no sign of spring. The headline in one of the national papers said – are we in for a white Easter? At the rate we are going it could be a sure bet! But despite all that nature has thrown at us there is some colour in the garden. Just outside the kitchen window I can see the pink flowers of the Bergenia 'Siberlicht'' - this is the only time of the year that this plant is admired as the snails love to shelter under its broad leaves to reek havoc in the summer. The daffodils are also making a splash of yellow in dark corners and I noticed some Wallflowers looking very splendid in a friend's garden. So I keep telling myself that the real Spring can't be far away.

The meeting on 29th April will be a talk by Ray Harlow on The White Mill and we look forward to seeing old and new members there. The schedule for the Annual Show should be available by the beginning of April and we hope to have them on sale in the Post Office again this year, so please look out for them. Coming to Kingsdown & Ringwould C.E.P. School for one week only
WEEE Recycling!
Kent County Council has set us yet another recycling challenge. For one week the school will host a pink skip in the car park to recycle waste electrical and electronic equipment (hence the name WEEE Recycling). Items such as old computers, printers, televisions, kettles, toasters, microwaves, Hoovers, lawn mowers, hairdryers will all be acceptable, any- thing that has a plug or takes batteries! (Unfortunately, very large items, such as washing machines, fridges, freezers or dishwashers cannot be accepted.) The skip will be available from Wednesday 24th April 2013 (after 3.30 p.m.) to Tuesday, 30th April 2013 (in the evening). During school hours the gates are locked, but there is an entry phone system. The gates will be open in the evening at varying times (depending on the use of the school hall). They usually are locked by 7.30 p.m. To make the skip more accessible, the school gates will be open on Saturday, 27th April 2013 between 10.00 a.m. – 12.00 noon. If you have any que- ries, please contact the school. We will be happy to make arrangements for you to drop during the day. Please do not leave anything outside the school gate. As with the battery recycling scheme, the council are offering a prize to the school with the heaviest skip, so your support would be much appreciated. (On that note, sincere thanks go to everyone supporting the battery recycling scheme, especially Kingsdown Post Office, who have a recycling box on their premises. We have already had one collection of a large number of batteries and are well on our way to another.) So during your spring clean, clear out your lofts and garages and do remember we have recycling facilities for many other items, such as clothing, shoes and accessories, ink cartridges and a British Heart Foundation collection bin for any charity shop items. 24 Sea gales cause collapse of seawall at Kingsdown
The high winds and gales of the 10th
and 11th of March have caused a serious breach in the seawall at Kingsdown, on the Deal side of the historic Old Lifeboat House. Dover District Council (DDC) was promptly on the scene to assess the damage and has recommended a plan for the short and medium term. In the short term, emergency repairs will involve placing large concrete blocks on the sea-facing side of the wall and in the medium term applying to DEFRA for urgent/emergency funding for proper repair. Work began on 20 March. This is the latest in a succession of coastal concerns facing Kingsdown. The New Year saw the Angling Club slipway, which was only extended in August 2012, being so significantly damaged that it broke into separate parts and eventually had to be lifted from the beach by crane, where it now remains. There is unlikely to be any funding to repair it before April 2013, and the more serious concern is that money may not be forthcoming in the future, thereby ending a long standing tradition of small fishing boats and angling. The shingle on the beach is now extremely low, and has not been replaced during annual recharging of other local areas, as it gets washed away. The timber groynes have now passed their useful life, and cannot hold the shingle in place. DDC has been working on a proposal to replace the groynes and recharge the beach, but to date, the flood defence funding that is available to Sandwich and Deal, does not extend to Kingsdown. Our local MP, Charlie Elphicke has been contacted and he is „deeply concerned‟ about the plight of Kingsdown beach. He has promised to help in the application for urgent funding for repairs to the sea wall. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * St Edmund‟s School Canterbury celebrates with St Mary‟s Church, Walmer St Edmund‟s School Canterbury is proud to present a concert for the St Mary‟s Church 125th Anniversary Concert Series on Friday 3rd May at 7.30pm. The concert will be given by soloists and ensembles from St Edmund's School Canterbury and will include a performance of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto no 2 and Albinoni's Adagio for Organ and Strings. The School's Chamber Choir, who are finalists in this year's Top Choir Kent Competition and are busy preparing for a series of UK concerts and services in London and Cambridge in July, will sing an extended selection of pieces in the second half, including Allegri's Miserere mei, Deus and William Harris' Faire is the Heaven. Music Scholars from the School include members of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and the Kent County Youth Orchestra, and a good number also attend junior departments of prestigious London conservatoires of music. 1. We are very concerned about amount of Macdonald's food wrappers being thrown out of cars in our Parish. 2. A suggestion has been made that car numbers are written onto packaging at drive throughs. What do other Councils think about this? 3. It has been noted that horse riders are using footpaths in our parish and churning them up. Footpaths are for walkers , 4. Horses should use byways or BOATS. 5. We are concerned that we have not had any visits from PCSO's in recent months. 6. Dog fouling is still a problem in our recreation ground and we urge dog own- ers to respect the rules concerning dogs.

30 Letter from Cornwall Founts of Knowledge. Nostalgia rules in later life. Don‟t you find that? For example, I recently fell to wondering – as you do – to where information has been gleaned from over the years. In my formative years for instance. Do you remember Pears Encyclopaedia – or Eve- rything Within? I can still visualise well-thumbed copies of those tomes sitting at my dad‟s left hand (shoulder actually) in the kitchen of our three-up three-down terrace house. What I don‟t recall clearly is the range of matter contained therein. Just about everything and anything a householder would need in the 1930‟s and 40‟s, I guess. And perhaps long after that era? At the same time I remember well that I ate encyclopaedias as though they were going out of fashion – as I suppose they were! The number of ten, twelve, twenty, twenty-four volumes – whatever – encyclopaedias available was legion, including for chil- dren. Perhaps those edited by Arthur Mee provide a good example. A wonderful mix of the natural world, the sciences, literature, both fact and fiction, fables, puzzles and mathematical conundrums and all sorts of other fare was ever a delight to me. Illustrated in black and white as I recall. Colour was to come later. In my 20‟s I felt moved enough to buy my own Encyclopaedia Britannica (EB - founded in 1768) – “A New Survey of Universal Knowledge”. And my 1956 purchase included colour even though that was restricted to volume 24 alone, which contained the coloured multi-page atlas and so much more. The Heavens – Northern and Southern Hemispheres; World: Political and Air Routes; the many paged political atlas of countries; Arctic and Antarctic Regions; The World Volcanoes and Earthquake Zones; The World Temperatures, Isobars and Winds, Seasonal Rainfall – and The World Mean Annual Prevalence of Cloudiness no less! The World Natural Vegetation; Salinity of the Sea; Deep Sea Deposits (Eupelagic, Hemipelagic, Littoral and Shallow Seas); Hair and Head Form (dark shades of National Socialism looming there!); Density of Population. And there is much more riveting material. When a new dad I bought a children‟s encyclopaedia - for the children (my excuse but passed on to son in his turn as a dad!). And I use my grown-ups encyclopaedia still! Mind you, the world has moved on. The atlas bears little relation to present day national boundaries. While my book-borne history stopped in 1956! Men were a long way off from setting foot on the moon, while the modern fixation of terrorists on martyrdom by self-inflicted bomb was a trend of the future. Global warming was still a phenomenon to be coined. The establishment of the EU was a twinkle in few eyes. But the Empire was not quite dead and there were still places for the RAF to send me. I confess to weakening in 2010 and trying to bequeath my EB to Kingsdown and Ringwould CEP School! I reasoned that it is never too early to get that touchy-feely relationship with antiques (pre-1956!), every child‟s inheritance. But the attempt aborted. And nowadays? Who enjoys the tactile turning of the pages of a volume of the EB – except me, of course? Need to know something? Google it! Tony Burt 31

New lace pieces are being started, knitting projects are finished and worn, spinning and weaving are ongoing and the art table turns out some amazing pictures. Hand sewing and also machine sewing projects are being worked, there's certainly a lot of talent about. The April meetings will be on the 10th and 24th. I hope everyone can get to the last April meeting(24th) as all money collected will be be donated to the Macmillan nurses. I have been given a box of very interesting sewing goodies, which I'll bring along. Any cash raised from it can go to the nurses. We meet alternate Wednesdays at Ripple village hall, 9:30am to 12:30pm. £2.00 per session, lots of chatter, cuppa and bics. It's an inspiring place to be.
