NADJMI ABULIAS and INDARMAWAN Faculty of Biology, Jenderal Soedirman University, Purwokerto 53122, Indonesia Received 22 January 2014/Accepted 21 June 2016 ABSTRACT Cijalu River is located in Western Cilacap Regency of Central Java Province . The river runs through forestry, housing and farming areas. This condition leads to a prediction that the river has been altered on its physico-chemical characteristics causing the river to be inhabited by a variety of fish species. This study aimed to collect data about fish species inhabiting Cijalu River and its distribution. A survey method has been done with clustered random sampling technique. The river was divided into three different areas, i.e. upper-, middle- and downstreams. Species diversity was measured as the number of species, while distribution was measured as the presentation of fish species in each site. Nineteen fish species of 10 families were identified from Cijalu River. The 10 families were Anabantidae, Bagridae, Balitoridae, Channidae, Cichlidae, Cyprinidae, Loricariidae, Osphronemidae, Poecilidae and Sisoridae . Cyprinidae was the family having the highest number of species (6 species) , followed by Bagridae ( 3 species), Channidae (2 species) and Osphronemidae (2 species). The remaining respective families were represented by one species. A complex pattern of fish distribution was observed during the study. Glyptothorax platypogon and Channa gacua were only found at the upper-streams, while Anabas testudineus was obtained in downstreams. The other remaining species could be observed either from the middle- to downstreams, or even from upper- to downstreams. Different pattern of species distribution could be caused by physico-chemical characteristic s variation from upper to lower parts of the river, especially water velocity and substrate types. Women fishermen help their husbands work to be able to meet the needs of the family. The purpose of this research is to identify the variety of fishing activities and the outpouring of time of women fishermen in Cilacap Regency. The location of this research is at the Fish Auction Place (TPI) TPI Tegal Katilayu, TPI Menganti Kisik, and TPI Lengkong. Descriptive methods based on case studies were used in this study. The sampling method used was purposive sampling, and the number of samples taken by 55 women fishermen. The results showed that the variety of activities carried out by women fishermen were also dominated by economic activities in addition to their roles as a housewife. Keywords: Women fishermen; outpouring time; Fish Auction Place (TPI); Cilacap 1. Introduction The potential of fisheries in Cilacap regency is very abundant, where the utilization of marine potential has not been developed optimally, especially in the fishery sector, due to inadequate human resources and limited fishing facilities.

  • Scale Morphologies of Freshwater Fishes at Tembat Forest Reserve, Terengganu, Malaysia (Morfologi Sisik Ikan Air Tawar Di Hutan Simpan Tembat, Terengganu, Malaysia)
Sains Malaysiana 46(9)(2017): 1429–1439 http://dx.doi.org/10.17576/jsm-2017-4609-11 Scale Morphologies of Freshwater Fishes at Tembat Forest Reserve, Terengganu, Malaysia (Morfologi Sisik Ikan Air Tawar di Hutan Simpan Tembat, Terengganu, Malaysia) FARAH AYUNI FARINORDIN*, WAN SERIBANI WAN NILAM, SHAHRIL MOD HUSIN, ABDULLAH SAMAT & SHUKOR MD. NOR ABSTRACT Scales are calcium carbonate and collagen-contained structures embedded within the fish epidermis and useful for species identification. This study aimed to describe morphological characteristics of scales and use the differences to prepare keys to species. Fishes were sampled from selected rivers of Tembat Forest Reserve, Hulu Terengganu. Specimens caught were from 3 families (Cyprinidae, Channidae, Nandidae) and 17 species. Each species was represented by ten individuals (size ranges 2.5 - 50 cm TL). The scales were removed, soaked in H2O2 (0.5%), NH3 (0.3%), DH2O and mounted between a pair of glass slides for digital photographing. The morphological descriptions were based on types of scales, distinctiveness of radii arrangement at the anterior field, radii cover, radii distribution, overall shape, focus position and focus pattern. Keys to species were constructed based on these scale morphological characters described. Measurements of scale total length (L), total width (W), rostral field length (L1) and caudal field length (L2) of the scales were taken using Image J software. The inter-specific variation among scales was indicated by L1/L, L2/L, L1/L2 and W/L indices through multiple comparison tests (ANOVA). It was found that all 17 species showed significant differences with at least one other species in all four indices.

Larvae developmental stages was studied in the endemic bilih fish (Mystacoleucus padangensis Bleeker, 1852) from Singkarak Lake, West Sumatera, Indonesia. We obtained the study material by artificial insemination. The fertilized eggs were incubated in dechlorinated tap water under temperature 26-28oC. Ten to twenty larvae were collected everyday on the first week and then weekly till juvenile. Larvae development stages was assigned using dissecting microscope, determined and named by body total length and morphological features. The result showed that the early juvenile reached at 11.1 mm (5 week post hatching, wph) and scale juvenile at 35.36 mm total length (16 wph) through stages are total length 2.44 mm (pectoral fin bud), 2.85 mm (gill vesicle), 3.24 mm (caudal fin development biginning), 3.60 mm (pectoral fin ray), 3.75 mm (jaw has formed completely), 3.9 mm (caudal fin primordia rounded), 4.12 mm (beginning of notochord flexi), 4.69 mm (dorsal and anal fin development), 6.18 mm (primordia hypural bone), 11.1 mm (skin finfold has disappeared), 14.92 mm (caudal fin completely developed), 16.85 mm (primordia scale developed), 18.32 mm (scale pattern pigmented area has reached lateral line).
