A new chief executive of has been appointed to Ashford Borough Council.

John Bunnett, who is currently the deputy chief executive at Thanet District Council, will take up the top job in Ashford in October.

Mr Bunnett lives in Mersham with his wife and two daughters and is a former Norton Knatchbull Grammar School pupil.

He said: "As someone who has lived in Ashford for many years, I have more than a passing interest in the borough, how Ashford is evolving into a vibrant and growing town and the role the council has to play in delivering this through providing quality services.

"I’m really looking forward to taking on the responsibilities the job presents and I’m looking forward to getting to know the employees and partners who are so committed to making a difference to the lives of people across the borough, and to working together as the town and borough grows."

Mr Bunnett was appointed as for his experience in both the private and public sector.

Council leader Cllr Paul Clokie (Con) said: "With strong leadership, policy and strategic planning credentials as well as an in-depth knowledge and understanding of key local authority issues, I am delighted John will be taking up this important position."

Mr Bunnett’s appointment is subject to agreement by the council at an extraordinary meeting on Monday.

The appointment follows the departure in early July of Ashford Borough Council’s former chief executive, David Hill, who left to take up the role of chief executive at Milton Keynes Council.
