Aguaruna indians at Nuevo Salem

Report by Roger Ahlman

www.kolibriexpeditions.com – [email protected] General

This trip was organized by Kolibri Expeditions. The client had some special requests of seeing as many as possible and also the Marvelous Spatuletail. Dissapointingly we missed the local Orange- throated at Nuevo Salem despite spending a day and a half at the spot where it is usually seen and having local indians to help us. The spectacular White-capped tanager is sometimes seen in the Abra Patricia area but we failed to find any. We did get a good compensation when we found and had scope-views of a male Straw-backed tanager! Add to this a number of scarce tanagers like Vermil- ion-, Masked- and Golden-eared tanagers and also Golden-collared- and Short-billed honeycreepers plus nearly all of the more common ones. At the full day we had at Abra Patricia we notched up no less than 30 of tanagers and related. After some searching we evently had gripping views of a full- plumaged male Marvelous Spatuletail.

Of course, doing northern Peru in just eight days is far too short time for such a vast and species-rich area and a lot of time was spent in the car driving from Chiclayo via Imacita to Tarapoto.

3 July - Roger arrived at Chiclayo by bus and caught a transport from there to the airport to pick up John. After a roadside breakfast we sat of towards Bagua Chica. This day was mainly a travelling day with just a few stops to break up the journey. We made a first stop south of Olmos and picked up some Tumbe- sian species like Tumbes sparrow and Collared antshrike. After lunch we made a leg-strecher stop and picked up a nice flock of about 15 Purple-throated euphonias on the same branch - spectacular! just outside Bagua Chica we stopped at a stake-out for Little inca-finch which we soon found along with Red-crested finch. Night at hotel Wilson.

4 July - We sat off at dawn for the long drive to Imacita along the Maranon river. Along the road we made several stops for birding and picked up goodies like male Black-bellied thorntail and Gould´s jewelfront. Upon arriving in Imacita in the late afternoon we made the arrangements for going out to the Aguaruna indian community called Nuevo Salem which is just half an hour downstream from Imacita and the only reasonably accessible site for the near-endemic Orange-throated tanager.

5 July - Pre-dawn start took us to the village at the crack of dawn. After installing ourselves in a hut and meeting the locals, we had breakfast and soon sat off up the trail to the spot where the tanager is usually seen. Some locals familiar with the tanager and it´s call joined us. Birding is worthwhile on the way up and Roger spotted nice things like male Spangled cotinga and Crimson-crested woodpecker both giving good scope-views. Up at the top things were rather quite and raptors was to be the main feature of the day with species like Black hawk-eagle, King vulture, Gray-headed kite, Short-tailed- and White hawks. A flowering pineapple attracted a Straight-billed hermit several times during the day. A nice flock in the afternoon raised some hope of finding the Orange-throated tanager but no. On the way down in the afternoon we scanned from the view-points and John finally got good looks at a pair of White-browed purpletufts that he missed in the morning. Lunch was brought up to us which was still warm and highly appreciated.

6 July - After a heavy rain- and thunder storm during the night and early morning, we sat off for a last attempt for the tanager. The trail was more slippery but we picked up some nice on the way up like Undulated antshrike, Black-bellied cuckoo and Short-billed honeycreeper. Again a fruitless wait at the top and after lunch we had to face the fact that we were not going to see the Orange-throated tanager this time. Disappointing but we had to be happy with the other good birds we saw. In late afternoon the boat came a picked us up and took us back to Imacita. After the heavy rain the river was considerably higher and the current was rather strong.

7 July - An early start for the long drive to Pomacochas via Bagua Chica. A breakfast stop along the river was surprisingly quiet and we continued to Chiriaco for a quick coffee. We continued to the more for- ested parts of the road and picked up goodies like Masked tanager, Dusky-billed parrotlets and Brown- mandibled aracaris. Rain put a halt to birding and we drove on to Bagua and dropped of Jose Lirio who had been coordinating our visit to Nuevo Salem. A long drive took us to Pomacochas around 17.00 and we made a stop near the rio Chido and soon Roger found an immature male Marvelous Spatuletail. This was however met with a dissatisfied grumpf from John - just like everyone else who sees a Spatuletail which is not a full-plumaged male. Nearby lives our local contact who keeps track of the males and we called in at his house and he had seen a male a few days earlier nearby, so we agreed to meet next morn- ing for the quest.

8 July - Breakfast outside Santos house and soon we sat off the short walk to a small forest patch and all but John had a quick glimps of a male Spatuletail. The next few hours were spent in the patch but the hummer proved elusive but giving good views several times for Roger and Santos whereas John al- ways happened to be at the wrong place or having something obscuring the view. Finally the Spatuletail showed well even for him on top of a flowering bromelia. After lunch we decided that the best we could to for the rest of the day was to drive about an hour the higher parts of Abra Patricia. Sunshine can be nice but in the mountain forest it is devastating for birdwatching with the activity being close to cero. Today was no exception and we were frustrated in this nice area that can offer fantastic birding. We were lucky with hummingbirds picking up 3 Green-fronted lancebills and 2 Emerald-bellied pufflegs. In the late afternoon we picked up a flock at the pass just where there is a trail which we walked into and got very good views of many things like Green-and-black fruiteater to Johns delight.

9 July - A predawn start from Pomacochas took us to Abra Patricia at dawn and after breakfast we started birding finding a nice flock. Our luck changed and we didn´t see much over the next hours and being a guide it is a bit frustrating when things just wont show! Our luck changed again when Roger found a male Straw-backed tanager which John got good scope-views of. This one is more widespread than the Orange-throated and White-capped tanagers but certainly harder to find as it is rare all over it´s range. Consecuently the mood rose and soon we found a nice flock giving good views of 10 species of tanagers and also Speckle-chested piculet. After lunch we drove down to the Afluentes area and I didn´t have much hope of finding much in the afternoon heat but i was wrong. Soon we found a nice flock pick- ing up some tanagers that John wanted. A short while later we found another flock and within five min- utes John had had close scope-views of Golden-eared-, Bay-headed- and Huallaga tanagers! We had to settle with 27 species of tanagers today! Who beats that? We celebrated with some wine in nice bodega in Pomacochas.

10 July - Today was pretty much a travelling day from Pomacochas to Tarapoto for our evening flight to Lima. We did however have time for some hours birding in the Abra Patricia area and we implemented the same tactic as yesterday. A nice flock gave us, and specially John, gripping views of some Hooded mountain-tanagers and also White-collered jays. Beyond the Chofercito restaurant we were extreamly lucky with flocks picking no less than four in a couple of hours! Goodies here included Golden-collared honeycreeper, Uniform antshrike, Rufous-rumped antwren and Blue-naped chlorophonia and the much desired Vermilion tanager. A male Lemon-throated berbet was unusually high in altitude rounded of a very productive morning. Despite seeing so many tanagers yesterday, we managed to pick up another 3 this morning and a lunch break at Yacumama near Rioja added Turquoise. A short stop at rio Moyo gave White-winged- and White-banded swallows. All in all this trip turned out very well despite de sad dip of Orange-throated tanager. We saw no less than 54 species of Tanagers (not including Flowerpiercers) and some very good Hummingbirds. The total trip list ended somewhere near 250 species.
