A bright, southern gem, RS Pup has been known since the end of the 19th century, and has provided variable star observers and researchers with a bright and interesting target throughout its history. RS Pup is a delta Cephei star, or Cepheid Variable, a Milky Way member of this cosmically important class of stars that let us measure distances in the universe. However, RS Pup is in a class of its own as a star that produces light echoes of its pulsations visible in the nebula that surrounds it. This month, join us as we learn a little more about this lovely southern target of our January skies. Discovery One of the earliest mentions of RS Pup in the literature was in a short report by David Gill, then director of Cape Observatory, that appeared in Astronomisches Nachrichten in 1897. Gill was himself passing along the observations of the noted visual observer R.T.A. Innes, a largely self-taught Scotsman who rose to become one of the preeminent observers of the southern hemisphere, and eventual director of the Transvaal Meteorological Department (Republic Observatory at Johannesburg). 105 Conventional and new directions in studying Cepheids L´aszl´oSzabados Konkoly Observatory of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences P.O. Box 67, H-1525 Budapest, Hungary In the first part of this paper, traditional methods of studying Cepheids are summarized, mentioning Detre’s contribution to this field. Then the new directions of Cepheid related research are reviewed with an emphasis on the problems concerning the period-luminosity relationship. Introduction Cepheids are supergiant stars that perform radial pulsation when they cross the clas- arXiv:astro-ph/0612334v1 13 Dec 2006 sical instability strip in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram during their post-main sequence evolution. It is the outer layers of Cepheids which oscillate, and the pulsation is main- tained by the opacity changes in the partially ionised zones of neutral hydrogen and singly ionised helium capable for transforming heat into mechanical energy via the κ-mechanism (κ is the conventional sign of the opacity). The mostly monoperiodic Cepheids may seem to be boring targets with respect to the multiperiodic radial and/or non-radial pulsating stars of different types but, in fact, Cepheids are neither perfectly regular, nor homogeneous. Subtle deviations from regular- ity and homogeneity result in important astronomical consequences. No wonder, Cepheids have remained in the forefront of the variable star studies in spite of the fact that a num- ber of astrophysically important new types of variable stars emerged in the last decades. Due to variety and richness of the relevant studies, selected results are only mentioned in this review. Traditional studies and Detre’s contribution The Cepheid pulsation is a free oscillation of the star whose frequency corresponds to the eigenfrequency of the stellar plasma sphere. -

We collected all available photometric data and some radial velocity measurements to investigate the nature of the modulation. The comparison of the photometric and radial velocity amplitudes confirmed that the star pulsates in the second overtone. The extensive data set, spanning more than 40 years, allowed us to detect a secondary modulation cycle with a period of approximately 5300 days or 14.5 years. The secondary variations can be detected in the period of the primary modulation, as well. Phenomenologically, the light variations are analogous to the Blazhko effect. To find a physical link, we calculated linear hydrodynamic models to search for potential mode resonances that could drive the modulation and found two viable half-integer (n:2) and three n:4 resonances between the second overtone and other modes. If any of these resonances will be confirmed by non-linear models, it may confirm the mode resonance model, a common mechanism that can drive modulations both in RR Lyrae and Cepheid stars. -

The discovery of period doubling and the wealth of low- amplitude modes enlightened the complexity of the pulsation behavior and guided us towards nonlinear and nonradial studies. Searching and providing theoretical explanation for these newly found phenomena became a central question, as well as understanding their connection to the oldest enigma of RR Lyrae stars, the Blazhko effect. We attempt to summarize the highest impact RR Lyrae results based on or inspired by the data of the Kepler space telescope both from the nominal and the K2 missions. Besides the three most intriguing topics, the period doubling, the low-amplitude modes, and the Blazhko effect, we also discuss the challenges of Kepler photometry that played a crucial role in the results. The secrets of these amazing variables, uncovered by Kepler, keep the theoretical, ground-based and space-based research inspired in the post-Kepler era, since light variation of RR Lyrae stars is still not completely understood. Radial Velocity Observations of Classical Pulsating Stars Richard I. Anderson1 1. European Southern Observatory Karl-Schwarzschild-Str. 2, D-85748 Garching b. Munchen,¨ Germany I concisely review the history, applications, and recent developments pertaining to radial velocity (RV) observations of classical pulsating stars. The focus lies on type-I (classical) Cepheids, although the historical overview and most tech- nical aspects are also relevant for RR Lyrae stars and type-II Cepheids. The presence and impact of velocity gradients and different experimental setups on measured RV variability curves are discussed in some detail. Among the recent developments, modulated spectral line variability results in modulated RV curves that represent an issue for Baade-Wesselink-type distances and the detectability of spectroscopic companions, as well as challenges for stellar models. Spectral line asymmetry (e.g. via the bisector inverse span; BIS) provides a useful tool for identifying modulated spectral variability due to perturbations of velocity gradients. The imminent increase in number of pulsating stars observed with time series RVs by Gaia and ever increasing RV zero-point stability hold great promise for high-precision velocimetry to continue to provide new insights into stellar pulsations and their interactions with atmospheres. 1 Introduction Classical pulsating stars such as RR Lyrae stars and type-I & II Cepheids feature radial pulsations that manifest as periodic spectral variability. Radial velocity (RV) observations reduce the complexity of spectral variability (in Teff , log g, turbulence, velocity gradients, line asymmetries, among others) to a series of easy-to-interpret 1 Doppler shifts in units of km s− . Although RVs are convenient quantities to work with, their seeming simplicity can be misleading.
